Spectrum

Spectrum

The last game on the Pretendo GameMan, Spectrum is a short puzzle platformer about sparks of color in a dull world. With over 100+ levels and too many secrets to count, Spectrum features an engaging categoric split between tight platforming and rapid, on-the-fly puzzle solving.

Puzzles in Spectrum are challenges to utilize all of your colors effectively. Evade a missile by enabling a wall in front of it, or avoid a dangerous spike by disabling its color. Your active color can be swapped at any time to accomplish all sorts of tasks. This core mechanic is the founding principle for Spectrum. All other factors, levels, secrets, and interactions are designed around proper and creative use of your colors.

Platforming in Spectrum is crafted to be precise and intuitive. It’s necessary to keep momentum and make narrow, intentional jumps. Spectrum has systems in place to help make fluid movement easier, but still intricate and satisfying. Mis-inputs and buggy movement are a thing of the past; the only skill cap in Spectrum is the player’s ability. Many other mechanics are thrown into the mix to make the base movement fresh and interesting as progression and mastery continues.

Furthermore, Spectrum features:

  • 100+ hand crafted levels to conquer and explore

  • 5 main colors to unlock

  • 8 sectors of ‘campaign’ levels

  • Sectors of hidden optional levels

  • A multitude of secrets hidden all over the place

  • And a crown for the king of the Spectrum, in addition to other cosmetics

To finish things out, here’s what Spectrum doesn’t feature:

  • Floaty movement

  • A deep story with many characters

  • Lootboxes

  • Quick-time events

  • Water levels

  • A 100-player battle royale mode

Tetracosm

Tetracosm

I generally don’t enjoy pixel art but this game looks very good and pleasing ^^

Story and lore is great - a lot of effort was put in there ^^

It’s a metroidovania so explore, upgrade, re-explore and fight bosses.

We play as a dino :3

That makes a nice TL;DR. In a way this game reminds me a lot of Dust an Elysian Tail - we explore beautiful world full of enemies, fight bosses, gain stuffs, have a cute companion and everything is surrounded by unexpectedly rich story which is only a plus.

Overall there is nothing I can say to discourage someone just wanting to play it through and experience the story and the world because it’s simply worth it. I could say that happy time - harsh time balance aka first we have fun with NPC and then go suffer outside with enemies outside the hub is a bit off because difficulty spikes only harder the further we go… But on the other paw the game allows us to obtain such things like infinite energy or obtaining ultimate damaging ability so enduring through difficulties and platforming puzzles is in fact highly rewarded. All it takes is persistence.

I don’t usually play platformer games, but I thought I would give this one a try since some of my Steam friends had it.

  • Colorful art.

  • Interesting plot and game universe.

  • Game can be played with keyboard or game pad controller. (I would recommend using a controller.)

  • Gameplay reminds me of Metroid (NES) or Mega Man X (SNES). It follows this general pattern:

    [olist]

  • Start out weak.

  • Explore an area.

  • Beat the boss of the area.

  • Get an upgrade by beating the boss.

True Hate

really love the art style and the soundtrack. its very addicting trying to get through each level. very unforgiving though. once you’re out of health thats it. right back to the beginning. really enjoyed this one.

The only True Hate I found while playing this game was for myself, after being unable to make the most simplistic jumps after dying several times to different traps. I do believe that another good name is True Pain. I tried so hard to get access to the exit, only for that to be the wrong exit. I’m a fool, I played myself. The game looks nice though and the music is very pleasant. It makes it much harder for me to genuinely get angry at myself.

A Pretty Odd Bunny

A Pretty Odd Bunny

Note: I received a free copy of this game from the developer with the intention for me to review it.

So, first things first, A Pretty Odd Bunny is hard as nails stealth platformer that despite it’s cute appearance, has some pretty violent aspects to it, making it a poor choice for a younger audience. Do not go into this expecting a kids' game, because your ass will promptly be handed to you by it’s many perils.

I really enjoyed how fresh this game felt. I’ve played a lot of platformers over the years, I would even say it’s one of my favourite genres, but a lot of them can feel very samey or average. A Pretty Odd Bunny keeps the platforming gameplay fresh by adding in some stealth elements. You cannot attack your foes, you will need to find ways to avoid or sneak past them. There are other levels that change things up additionally by chasing you with a overflow of carrots, or making you ride in a minecart.

After completing it, i can safely say it’s a extremely fun game

it’s short, simple, cute, and just fun

it’s visuals and art style combined with it’s mild gore and central theme feels very reminiscent of newgrounds platformer game

There’s not much to say besides that if you’re looking for a simple but addicting fun game or want something cute or want bunnies(although one that eats pigs) then i’d highly recommend it especially for it’s price.

Joy the Pug

Joy the Pug

A pug-tastic game. It’s a sweet and short adventure of Joy the Pug trying to save the world from Space Kittens. There are 20 levels in which you need to jump over obstacles and try not to die. I admit, some levels were frustrating as hell (that’s the idea, right?) and I almost gave up, but kept on going because I was having a laugh at the same time. The puns were cute, Joy was cute, and the music is addictive.

The game probably needs polish here and there but, knowing that the budget was limited and it was done by a very small team, I am pleased with what they created. I hope we’ll get to see more games from them in the near future!

Warlock Bentspine - Toilet Edition

Warlock Bentspine - Toilet Edition

It took me awhile to figure out that there were upgrades, but after I did, LOVED IT!

Real player with 10.3 hrs in game

nothing especially bad about this game, but it almost seems to pride itself on being lackluster. It’s competently made and fairly polished, but I can’t help but feel like there was a great game just beneath the surface that didn’t come to fruition.

it’s not particularly fun, but it wasn’t annoying enough for me to stop playing. music is good, sprites are charming but poorly colored. level design is pretty standard fare, systems (upgrades, weapons) are intriguing but don’t make up for the repetitive and uninteresting enemy behaviors.
