Reignfall

Reignfall

It is a buggy mess (late game), it crashes a lot and feels like tons of missed opportunities, it looks like… well… but as a concept it is really good fun.

So this game is a mix between tower defense, real time strategy, city building and 3rd person fighting game. You start a game on a procedurally generated map and you have to survive 15 waves of attackers to win. There are rogue-like elements in the sense that everytime you defeat 3 waves you get reward items which you can carry on in your next game (making it easier, obviously) providing a variety of bonuses from extra ressources to extra troops or bonuses and abilities for your lord like damage resistance, bodyguards and a variety of skills and spells.

Reignfall I think is an underrated gem that I wish a lot of people would discover and get into more. If your a big fan of strategy games like Total War, Age of Empires and also action RPG games like Dynasty Warriors, this is a pretty fine mix of those elements along with roguelite and city builders!

In Reignfall your objective is to defend against an onslaught of random enemies every couple minutes, in between this time frame you must build and manage your town to produce resources and gold to get defenses, soldiers, and heroes to fight on your behalf. Some buildings require chains in order to be used effectively, for example if you want to make a lot of food you’ll need to first get a wheat farm, where do you build farms? On fertile ground (dark green tiles) and you must build the farm plots on said fertile ground. After that you need to construct a mill to have that grain be turned into flour, and a bakery to turn it into food. These chains and production buildings all take gold which you will need to counter balance by building homes to increase gold flow and also purchase units. The game finely balances out and stresses that you can’t just be spend gold happy to get what you need and strategic placement of your buildings to get the most use out of them.

Atomic Society

When I first purchased this game, I have to admit, my initial judgement of it was not favorable. The game was slow and plodding as it was so resource intensive. Saving took several minutes, for example. But, as the years passed, the devs overcame these obstacles and created a fairly decent game. To be certain, it isn’t yet completed, but in its current state, it is definitely worth the money. I would recommend getting the game now before it leaves early access as I imagine they will be asking much more for it once completed.

You know that meme with “I expected nothing and I’m still disappointed”?

This pretty much sums up how I feel about “Atomic Society” after 1 day of playing it.

(I can’t ask for a refund anymore, but I would if I could.)

Think at your ordinary city building game. Food buildings for food, water buildings for water, housing… and that’s it. There is nothing post-apocalyptic, no danger, no radiation, no mutants, nothing. You start the game with 35-50 people (depending on the difficulty) + your “custom” character. As you play the game, no matter how bad you do, other people join your city. There is literally an endless line of people on the map, heading to your location. (Ah, and before you ask, I did “finished” it on expert mode.).

Human Factory

Human Factory

Human Factory has so much potential that it was able to keep me hooked despite bugs that would normally cause me to instantly abandon E.A. I play a ton of simulation games, and I sincerely hope this one doesn’t get abandoned (the dev’s fast response on the discussion board suggests otherwise).

Pros:

Easy to understand process with fairly optimized factory production. I wasn’t able to find anything that was too over or underpowered: the numbers felt just right.

Solid music, a must have if a simulation game is to keep you hooked

I’m not a hardcore gamer and this game made me play for almost 8 hours straight. Yes, it’s very good.

Garbage

Garbage

In depth at first– TL;DR at the end.

Ok, so, I have beaten this game right before the thirty hour mark and what do I have to say. It’s good. But, it’s bad. And, what I mean by this is simple as any other problem found with games similar in case. The basic lay out is very nice, no lie– if you played Monster Rancher or the Digimon games, you’ll like this. If you like Darkest Dungeon or Dark Souls, you’ll like this. If you like AoE, Civ, Banished, Endzone and so many other games like these, you very well may end up liking this. This is a resource management, unit grinding, hardcore rpg adventure.

THIS GAME IS INCOMPLETE DO NOT BUY!

To start, it is an auto save function with no choice of you being able to save except what the game claims.

A few mechanics that makes this game just terrible, it is an auto attack, pick your moves and let it play out type of game. It gives a false advertisement that you get to “pick your fighter” and develop like an RPG. NOPE! You assign moves, everything plays out, characters can get stuck walking in circles as you get beat up. Any settings you adjust in the options menu, resets every game.

The Guild II Renaissance

The Guild II Renaissance

The Guild II Renaissance is a game that is most fundamentally about money management. You use your funds to build a number of production facilities - everything from your basic farm to buildings producing high end equipment, armor and artifacts for trade or use. In addition to a typical strategic “god view” you control 3 individual characters. You can engage in a variety of activities with these characters like having them run for office, enage in special actions with the buildings they own like goading the workers into action, and so forth.

TL:DR; Steep Learning curve. Old Graphics. Buggy Mess. One of my favorite games.

So I want to start off by saying if you’re interested buy this version of the game and only this game. This is a stand alone game, and it is the most up to date - bug-free version. Also, getting the MegaMod pack doesn’t hurt either, adds a lot to the game and fixes a bunch of bugs.

It took me 4-5 times on separate occassions to get into this game. Until I finally found my stride and went deep in, and man I feel like I was missing out. If you’ve ever played Civilization games you know the term ‘one more turn’ - well this game gives you exactly that same feeling.

Frozenheim

Frozenheim

First, the TL;DR: While the game still feels rough around the edges, it is a fun game if you like games/matches that can last as little as 30 minutes and as long as 3 hours (exploring to get Ragnarök).

GREAT:

  • Aesthetically pleasing with good music

  • Building options

  • Enough maps (4) to play skirmishes, games and 2 campaigns

  • Minor customization (color selection) of your colony

NEUTRAL:

  • You colony can expand 3 times, each with prerequisites and materials required, but the expansion is small. Depending on your starting location, it can matter a lot or none at all.

Real player with 247.5 hrs in game

Game, building and personal information:

(Detailed)

  • Frozenheim a “serene Norse city builder” that absolutely feels serene when focused on creating a settlement. I begin with just a Jarl’s longhouse and a handful of citizens standing around, and I build a lumber camp, fishing and hunting huts, a gathering station (for stone), and then a training camp so I can begin to create some soldiers. I put down some houses to grow my population, and there are windmills for wheat fields and farmhouses but they won’t generate resources in the harsh winters that cover the world in snow and ice so be aware of that.
