Review Date: Nov 20, 2021

I wrote a giant review, and then after reading through it, realized my opinion was more like no than yes, and when I changed it, Steam erased everything I had written. So, rather than do it again, I’ll just drop some bullet points. I’ve been playing since early in Early Access, so that will color my review.

New overworld trade system is terrible. It’s boring. It’s grindy. and it doesn’t work. I’m at max rep with a faction, and have yet to see the “subversion” mission mentioned in the tutorial.

A decent time killer as-is, but released far too soon for the ambition they sought to achieve.

  • Settlement milestones are sparse and largely uninteresting, with few “make your own goals” opportunities to fill in the blanks. You will pretty much always build the same structures in the same order, and most structures are not actually all that useful.

  • Overworld is shallow and brainless, with pawns moving around for the sake of moving. Factions have no personality or storyline aspects, and the “war” has nothing to make it compelling or interactive. This is actually a bit of a downgrade from the initial concept at the start of Early Access, where there was at least a good vs. evil kind of thing going on.

Survival Vacancy

Survival Vacancy

Survival vacancy is a very approachable simulation game that is in early access. Some notable features, lossless experimentation (make mistakes, try new things, see what happens), resource tiles as well as resource nodes, flight available (no limitations on movement besides the jet pack timer), well paced phases to the game. The first phase of the game, you’re in what amounts to a safe sandbox. You can experiment with resource collection, production, supply chain. However, progress is gated by the introduction of enemies. Once you bring survivors in, you will be attacked, meaning you have to think through your supply chain beyond “just the next step”. This is an interesting challenge when first encountered and effectively shapes gameplay once understood.

Real player with 73.4 hrs in game

Survival Vacancy I recommend, for a game made by a single dev, its extremely impressive to see.

But because it’s only 1 dev, only so much can be done in a given amount of time.

For the genre it feels like a bit of Oxygen Not Included, and a bit of factorio at its core, but aside from that it does have its own unique aspect which also sets it quite a bit apart from those titles.

I’ll start with the Pro’s:

-runs pretty well if you are aware of what causes lag spikes to avoid that, Dev has told me personally, that he’s working hard on fixing these before going to 1.0

Fata Deum

Fata Deum

With the power of a god, who will you become?

A god game where you not only build settlements, but compete with other gods for influence. In Fata Deum, the more followers you have, the more power you wield.

Manage your mana to manipulate your settlements, devotees and the fabric of reality itself. As you amass more power, you’ll be able to pick more unearthly feats to wield.

Convince or conquer

During the day, use your influence on the mortals. Will you bless and inspire them onto good work, or strike fear into their hearts with terrifying visions? But be wary, the townsfolk have their own free will.

At night, you can manipulate settlements. Instruct the mortals to build you mighty temples for worship, farms and lumber mills so that they may prosper, or even to ruin other villages.

Frighten or foster

Perhaps you’d like to be a tyrant, ruling over a kingdom of debauchery and blood. Raise an army and sacrifice your mortals to summon terrifying demons. Your choice.

Or maybe you do believe in fun, festivities and spreading the love, but have no qualms weakening your enemies by spreading fear - or just hitting them with a Thunderstrike.

Shape a living world

As your influence grows, the living world will shape around it, getting ever more vast. Each god manifests their kingdom differently.

Will yours be a kingdom of crops and light, or twisted trees and glowering darkness? You’ll battle gods of Violence, Deceit, Fertility and Pleasure.

Experience your story

Play a young god rising to glory in campaign mode, which is full of curious and revealing challenges set to an engaging narrative.

Vilset

Vilset

I played a lot the other game made by the same developer, CrossWorlds: Escape.

For some reason I like that game more than other survival games, despite still being improvable for normal players.

I am confident that this game will have a similar evolution or better.

When you start the game, it shows the following message:

**Welcome to the alpha version of the Vilset.

This version of the game has many limitations, many game mechanics have not yet been implemented, and temporary models and animations are used.**

far to many serious bugs in this game to be enjoyed, characters starving even though they have plenty of food constantly eating yet starvation monitor going up up up dead

Captain of Industry

Captain of Industry

Captain of Industry is a construction and management simulation game where you and your loyal crew escaped to an abandoned island to start a new colony after the world has spiraled into chaos. In order to survive, you will need to mine raw materials, harvest food, build factories, manufacture products, construct vehicles, research new technologies, and explore your surroundings. If you are successful, you can even start a space program, build rockets, and assemble your own space station! With all that power and technology, you might be even able to end the word chaos. It’s all in your hands.

Manufacture products

Start simple - smelt iron, mix concrete, create construction parts, and grow food. Soon you will be able to expand into crude oil processing, electronics, solar panels, datacenters, and even rocket parts. There are over 100 unique products to work with!

Build efficient factories

To build an industrial empire, you need to be clever. Place machines carefully to connect them more efficiently with conveyor belts. Refine raw resources close to their mining location to save fuel needed for transportation.

Shape fully dynamic terrain

No mountain is tall enough for your fleet of excavators! You can shape your island to your will - build natural bridges and ramps to access remote areas. Are you running out of space? How about dumping some rocks into the ocean to create new land!

Mine raw resources

Find the natural riches of your land and use them to expand your factories. Mine coal, iron, copper, gold, or pump underground water!

Farm your land

You need to feed your people. Start basic by growing some potatoes on farms. But this won’t be enough. Later, use fertilizers and advanced greenhouses to keep up with the food demands.

Research new technologies

Research is a must have! Unlock new buildings and materials and make your factory more efficient. New technologies will change the course of your future.

Construct new vehicles

Trucks, excavators, and tree harvesters! Upgrade your fleet to make the most of it but make sure you are producing enough fuel to run all of these heavy machines!

Explore the world

Repair and upgrade your ship with better engines, armor, and weapons. Explore your surroundings, find refugees, discover more resources, and be ready for naval battles!

Factory Town

Factory Town

TL;DR:

  • A mix of elements from Anno, Factorio and Kingdoms and Castles

  • It’s got that game loop in place: discover improve discover improve. There’s always that one new thing you want to build or line you want to change

  • Very active dev, daily responses in Discord and weekly updates

  • Already a large amount of content, even in its current state you’ll get your money’s worth in playtime

Disclaimer:

I’m one of the early beta testers, probably the 3rd or 4th wave. So I did get the game for free (although I’ve since abundantly made up for it with feedback & bug reporting etc). I’ve also been bumped up to mod on the Discord (come say hi!). So you know, this is a sliiightly biased review ;)

What is it?

A resource management game where you will find increasingly efficient ways to route goods from source to manufacture, and onwards to sell so that you can grow your town.

You’ll start with a few workers with which you’ll gather wood and stone. Then you’ll manufacture planks which in turn can make a wheel! Along comes a cart that can carry more than all those people. Meanwhile, new buildings will start to unlock, and new products can be manufactured which in turn can earn you coins of differing colours, with more advanced technologies needing the rarer coins to research and unlock.
