Fractal Evolution

Fractal Evolution

Fractal Evolution is a 2D space exploration RPG with life simulation elements inspired by Conway’s Game of Life.

You will explore a universe, fight monsters, and complete quests, with the ultimate goal of returning life to the universe in the form of single-celled creatures called Fractals. Each planet begins with just two unique fractals that breed with each other, and ultimately spawn a network of creatures competing for resources and constantly evolving. Study the evolution of these creatures and eventually gain items that allow you to engineer their genome. Every universe is unique, and runs on a non-deterministic simulation that follows two simple equations. One for physics, and the other for biology.

This game is simple, but addicting. I wasn’t sure it will last me for more than few hours, and I usually don’t approach games thinking that I’ll stay up all night playing, but I got lucky here. This game is all about management and choices. It’ll start innocent, but quickly becomes pure evil the more you hold on.

Gameplay

You control most of the things indirectly. You’ll start small, and you’ll make a lot of mistakes while trying to get bigger. I can’t promise you that you’ll get hooked the same way I did, but after having few tries on my own, I’ve started seeing the game differently. It is based around trying it over and over, and I didn’t get sick of it. Despite what I’ve heard, every part, even the beginning, becomes an endurance run. Since you have to control everything, you can’t stop.

So, after over 40 hours spent playing the game I felt it’s time to finally write a review.

First of all, I really enjoy this game tremendously, but I’d say it’s not for everyone. If you read other reviews, you probably have a good idea what the good part of the game is, nice art, awesome soundtrack (first time I ever bought a game OST, and not regretting it one bit). These are the two things I think everyone can agree about.

Then it gets more tricky. The gameplay isn’t for everyone. It’s literally discover everything for yourself. including how your own guys behave, even how your own horse behaves.

Lords and Villeins

Lords and Villeins

Little bit of background: I own about 50 management/colony sim/city builder games. I love the genre but a lot of the games are very similar so it can get boring. I bought this game impulsively not expecting a lot but once I started playing I fell in love with its unique mechanics and game play system.

Pros:

Unique art style

Hardworking, responsive, and dedicated devs

Positive Community

Frequent updates and bug fixes

Solid base game for EA

Ability to change speed of the game

Great tutorial that isn’t annoying or makes you feel dumb, allows you to naturally learn the game while giving hints

I’ll preface this by saying I’ve never bought an early access game before. I’ve read plenty of horror story reviews about people who have bought a game and the Devs just up and quit on it, or worse, Devs that continue to charge for a game they’ve knowingly abandoned. I’m very guarded about paying for something that isn’t finished, with a promise that it will be, someday. That said, this looked like the perfect game for me, and I can see this Dev team is actively reading reviews, they use critiques constructively, and they’re putting out regular updates, so I decided I’d take a chance on this one.

Magnery Reign

Magnery Reign

Magnery Reign gives you the opportunity to feel like a city manager, and subsequently create your own country. This is not an easy task, because it will not be a calm walk in the park: bandits, soldiers of other countries and even enemy robots will prevent you from calmly going about your business.

At first, you will have a small village at the end of the world, which is part of one of the countries, few people and nothing at all resources.

However, even such a small and poor settlement will still try to rob the bandits greedy for profit.

You will need to show strategic thinking and not only create a variety of weapons for your people, but also build defensive structures or even send armored vehicles, under the control of your fighters, to strengthen the bandits and the capitals of countries that imagine themselves to be the kings of this world.

When your settlement gets the right to be called a city, then political games will be added to the problems that were before, because your settlement is not the only one on the map. Someone wants to trade with you, and someone wants to get your wealth by force.

Therefore, it will be vital not only to strengthen defensive positions, but also to develop relations with countries and other settlements.

By developing further, gaining experience and strengthening your position in the political arena, you will be able to declare your independence and become the head of your own country.

You will be able not only to reach a new level of relations with other countries, but also to a new level of destruction, because now you have access to the resources of not only your city and its regions, but also the resources of your entire country.

And how you dispose of them depends only on you!

Grim Nights 2

Grim Nights 2

the game is good & i love it but its pretty buggy right now but alot of fixes have happen in 1 week with only 1 developer doing it so he deserves a lot of credit & support so join his discord by going to the discussion thing & most of you probably dont know where thats located so all i will say is look carefully & you might just see it by clicking on the game but not play it yet. the developer he needs to make changes like making the visitors spawn more often because im sick of being stuck with a low amount of villagers & i hope the max amount of villager is high enough to my likeing & that zombies & bandits go though some changes like spawning more often & being a bit harder after a while & there need to be more food in game & better stuff to refill energy faster & better & much more

Grim Nights 2 expands upon the original title with new occupations, resources, art and music. The focus has now shifted towards colony management. After picking your preferred location and biome (currently only 2 available) in a randomized world, you assemble four members to start your new settlement. Their perks and initial stats, which are determined by culture and background, will be instrumental in time and resource management - so pick wisely. You can later hone your settlers' skills, change their primary and secondary occupation and assign them items. They will require rest and food individually, so make sure you build them safe beds and grow and prepare enough grub.

Kingdom of Bees

Kingdom of Bees

Pros:

-Very simple and fun game to sit back and enjoy.

Cons:

-It has a few things that need be fixed. (Adding in the game)

Example: A nearby queen in another hive died and I gained 2 warriors, 2 defenders and 1 worker but the maximum amount of bees didn’t change to add 5 bees to my hive.

Example: I had 3 warriors and 2 defenders killed by chemicals, it added correctly to where I went from 5 warriors to 2 and 3 defenders to 1, but the maximum amount of bees I could store didn’t change and I couldn’t buy anymore bees still until I upgraded hive.

incredibly simple game. it does get boring quite quickly and there isn’t much to do in this game. it’s not really worth $1 though. It’s a good game to have playing in the background while you study though.

Cats also enjoy watching the bees fly around your screen. 10/10 for that.

Oxygen Not Included

I have been playing this game on and off during its entire release time, the base game as well as its DLC, and during this entire time I could see the work that has been constantly put into it.

Pros: Always a work in progress. You rarely run into a time in the game where you do not know what to do next. There is always the next project or problem that needs your attention. Not in a stressful way, more in a “it never gets boring” kind of way. There are tons of things to learn and build to get your dupes more comfort or to just mess with the elements in the sandbox mode.

Excellent simulation game with tons to experience and learn. Intimidating because of its complexity, but satisfying when things work. Lots of content, fun to start new games once you’ve learned how to handle different challenges. Charming, funny animations, great art style and music, always something new to try. Does take effort to learn all of the systems, probably the most complex game I’ve played, but also one of the most rewarding. One of my favorites purchases on Steam.

Hell Architect

Hell Architect

Hells Architect is my first ever review, and one of the reasons why I decided to leave a review for this game is because I am surprised by the mixed reviews the game is currently at (day 2 of release). In my opinion, the producer and developer of Hells Architect launched this game correctly; they ran a successful campaign by keeping the customer in the loop during development, they released a playable demo, they sought feedback from testers, are continuing to listen to feedback, and perhaps most importantly – they delayed launch by several months until they had a viable product ready to go that they were proud of!

Real player with 116.4 hrs in game

I feel awful posting this review, but I’m hoping that the dev team will fix the issues that I have with the game over time. It’s not that I don’t recommend the game, I just don’t recommend it right now and at the price I paid for it (more than $20 in case someone is reading this later after a price change). I’ve completed every stage with the exception of the final mission as of this writing (and I intend to complete that stage), as well as played some of the sandbox mode. My actual playtime is a bit lower than what the review will have listed, since I had to leave the game open while I wasn’t actively playing it (more on that below).
