Hero’s Spirit

Hero’s Spirit

This game is wonderful and completely infuriating. If you really enjoy games with layers upon layers of things to discover….well Hero’s Spirit definitely has that. The start is a very good typical hero’s journey with a big fight at the end with the Big Bad…..and you might think you’ve fully beaten the game at that point but….. Every time you think you’ve found everything…there’s more to find. I’ve actually started going “It’s Hero’s Spirit. It’s never finished.” in the Hero’s Spirit Discord as my personal tagline for the game because even though the game is complete….I know we haven’t found all of the game content yet. And frankly…I kind of don’t know if we ever will.

Hero’s Spirit is a collection-focused retro exploration game experience. It hearkens back to the old Legend of Zelda, where you could opt to poke and prod all around for hidden things, or rely on a friend or guide to help speed things along. I recommend taking lots of notes.

I’ve obsessively trawled across the world in the beta version, its music now burnt into my brain, and I can say it has been a wonderful callback to simpler times in gaming while still being grand in its own way. There may be a bit too many things hidden a bit too well, making a blind 100% run very tedious. But, if you are like me, this might just be your natural habitat.

Lost Caves

Lost Caves

The “Master Mind-Numbing” Achievement is one of the worst things I’ve ever had to do in a video game. True to its name, it is excruciatingly tedious and actively wastes the player’s time as much as it possibly can. Why would you even include something like this in your game if you know it’s terrible?

Besides that one Achievement, Lost Caves is a competent and (mostly) enjoyable little platformer that reminds me of “The Great Cave Offensive” from Kirby Super Star mixed with the aesthetics of an Amiga-era platformer. If this sounds up your alley then definitely pick it up as it’s worth its meager price and a normal playthrough doesn’t take very long.

Surprisingly good for a simple $1 platformer. Responsive controls (although you can’t rebind them, at least on keyboard, which is a downside), solid exploration and treasure hunting, nice music, and a cool final boss. It’s a short game - maybe 2 hours or so, but it also has a postgame so you can spend more hours 100%ing it.

Edit: It’s now $7. For such a short game, it might be worth waiting til there’s more content added honestly, or if it goes on sale.

It was a fun little game… my only complaint is not about the game but that I earned all the achievements and then discovered what “Profile Features Limited” means. I’ve never noticed this note on any other games but now I know this game doesn’t appear in my “Perfect Games”… why Steam???

Otherwise, good luck figuring out the trash can… you can do it… and the Elixir mission… lol. They were tough but doable. Nice touch by the game dev to make those a challenge.

This game is a really simple adventure indie game. I really enjoyed playing this game, I like the genre and games with strange atmosphere and funny and weird quest. Sure the story might be mind shocking to genre savvy people but I liked the twist anyways. Plus I am a big fan of how the quest tied in with the story/message of the game. The game does have issues with it inventory and picking up items. It was really annoying trying to get an item off the floor and no way to toggle to it. Also the way way you shoot your gun. Sometimes I am clicking directly at the enemy but it doesn’t connect and takes a few tries before they die. Also there is some game mechanic that felt useless like the heart v body stats? I am not sure if the affects the ending. There is some spelling and grammar errors but this guy is doing everything himself and it is way better than other translations it brings charm anyways.

Great controls, excellent variety, interesting levels, what’s not to love? This game is very difficult though - play on assist mode unless you are very well versed in difficult platformers such as IWBTG fangames. Controls are simple, but very precise. Each level feels different from each other and brings something new to the game, which is something I wish were more common in games in general.

Edit As of the last update, the game has been reworked to remove the difficulty spikes without needing to have an “assist” mode. It is now an A+ speedrunning experience. If you enjoy speedrunning platformers, GET THIS GAME NOW!

DO NOT BE FOOLED BY GENERIC APPEARANCES. Behind this generic facade of “looks like every other platformer” and the mediocre presentation lies one of the purest distillations of 2D reflex-based platforming. Silky smooth controls, impeccable level design, unique level elements, heart-pounding music and a fully fledged level and game builder round out the highlights of this love letter to action platform games!

Enemy placement and level flow are extremely well implemented; so whether you’re rushing for a time attack or carefully trying to collect all the gems without dying, each stage is a palimpsest of overlapping multi-function design with plenty of room to pick your own strategies.

Glyph☀️

Glyph is challenging and relaxing platformer. That’s a rare combination to see but in this case it really works well. There are multiple different level themes with their own personal soundtracks to create nice and relaxing atmosphere. Some are darker while others raise you above to clouds.

The learning curve in this game has been balanced well with the levels. At the beginning you feel like you can collect everything quite easily and you get in to nice mood. Then levels get harder but you don’t really notice it that well because you start to be in control of your character and it does what you want it to do.Even harder levels won’t feel impassable because you’re not forced to collect everything and the mechanics are simple to learn. What you need is little creativity to reach harder places.

One of the smoothest platformers I’ve ever played. It can be a bit frustrating when you first are learning, but once you get the hang of it, you literally start to fly. The world is your oyster- er… scarab!

  1. The levels are condensed, short and mostly unique, providing amazing replay value after hundreds of attempts. They’re also in a 3D space, so optimization becomes more of an interesting challenge! (I definitely haven’t played Broken Road 1000 times, what are you talking about)

  2. You can choose the levels you want to play and which ones you don’t, providing relief if a level isn’t your speed.

15 hours worth of exactly what I wanted, I’ve maxed everything out, looking forward to full release! I paid 5$ for this, and easily would have paid 15 - 20$ for the alpha.

Not sure if a developer has ever read one of my reviews before but, things I would like to see in the future for A.G (also my initials, because were dope) are :

Relationship status with villagers - Increasing this would broaden the villagers desires and spending leeway. The amount you overcharge on an item would be in the formula for decreasing their relationship points. Levels of acquaintance could be titled. Pop up messages from villagers to convey appreciation or anger. “Damnit! I can never rely on you!” This may even end up influencing his battle outcomes.

I bought and played this game for about 5 hours on Alpha 2 until they updated it the next day with Alpha 3, and there were so many changes that it feels like a whole different game. The Alpha 2 version was fun if a little simple, but the update has made the game so much better in a lot of ways. It was like the developer could read my mind, they added pretty much everything I wanted to see in this game.

Overall, the game is a lot more fun and a little more challenging than it was before. If you enjoy collecting/harvesting items and crafting with them at a casual pace, then this could be a fun game for you.
