Effie

Effie

This is again more of a neutral rating than a definite positive one. But let me get more into the details to explain.

Effie is a typical Unreal 3D-platformer made by a small team, and this shows, in both good and bad ways. On the positive side you can definitely see the dedication and work that was put into the environments of some levels (like the Vineyard or Windmills City), the platforming sequences are decent, too, and the many runes to collect give some good incentive to explore. Difficulty stays in a casual to easy range, yet doesn’t get too boring. Music was quite fitting as well, not too much variation, but also alright on the whole. So I have to admit I had fun regarding those aspects all in all. I didn’t mind the sometimes a bit clunky movements, or the narration style (a voiced narrator tells the game like a story to his grandchild). But the design and technical flaws sadly always pulled my experience down in between.

TL;DR at the end.

When you start the game, right off the bat, first thing I noticed is how unpolished the game is, the animations for opening chests for example seem half-assed, the combat basically consists of just mashing heavy attack and later on when you unlock the boomerang move (which for some reason is even stronger than the heavy attack while also being a huge AoE) and you spam that instead you have to watch that animation in slow-motion EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

On the narrative side, the story is very basic but that’s not why I’m here for, and the voice acting is pretty lame and you’d keep hearing the same voice lines over and over again for example every time you open a blue chest you get one of two voice lines, and you open quite a lot of them.

Bro, where’s My head???

Bro, where’s My head???

If you have ever played Zup & Oik series then you are not missing much. It’s basically the same concept. Although I do think this is an easier version of that game. It is a good place to start if you feel that some levels of “Zup & Oik” are sometimes hard to complete.

I recommend it to people who are starting out in these types of puzzle games and need time to adjust to the dynamic of the plays.

Overall, not a bad one in the bunch and a game that just about anybody can play.

Some people and myself included are problably fine with the fact that this game is a “Chocolate makes you happy” or even “Next” rip off in a way.

Despite the fact that it’s actually a pretty darn good one! It runs fine and it has a fun art style!

Many may not think so but looking past how simple “Bro where’s my head??” may be to some, you see complexity and creativity above all.

The road to victory presented in each level requires players to employ basic problem solving skills and rudimentary thinking.

Mission IDLE

Mission IDLE

I cannot recomend this game purely because it must be either focused or all other windows must be minimized.

This is an idle game you cannot idle and it feels super bad.

Worse- it doesnt mention any of this.

I might have around 24hours on record but this being the case, at least 10 of those hours was the game actually sitting there, doing nothing…………….. LOL

——–Update————-

I contacted the developer about this and it seems there was a bug in the afk code that was causing this issue.

This is a simple, grindy, idle game and this dev’s 3rd game. I like it. It isn’t complicated, but it’s very easy to get all the achievements in under 4 hours. You could keep playing to make your numbers bigger, which I was fine to try, but there’s a major bug that prevents this.

Even though the game is only 6 months old at this point, no one plays the game anymore so the dev isn’t going to work on it anymore. Understandable, but there are some huge problems with the game in it’s current state.

New Super Lucky’s Tale

New Super Lucky’s Tale

I can’t recommend a game enough for those looking for something new in the same vein as classic 3D platformers from the N64/PS1 era. This is it! Although the game is targeted to a younger audience, there’s a lot that may keep you hooked no matter what the age: a fun and diverse selection of levels (3D, 2.5D side-scrolling, “runner” style levels, and a selection of varying bonus levels, just to name a few) and locations, cute characters, and whimsical and diverse soundtrack, just to begin with. Not to mention the Foxington hub world, designed for some pretty decently challenging stages!

I played the original version a long time ago and enjoyed it so much, that I just had to buy this one and play it again.

After playing this new version, I launched the original one to see the difference and wow, its a big one! In the new version, the graphics are smooth and the controls are tight!

There are a few misses in my opinion. In Wigglemania the hitboxes are a bit messed up. When an enemy hits you, most of the time it won’t register which of course is at your benefit, but its such a shame. What’s even worse to me is the fact that in the original version, Lucky ran on all four and I thought it was so cute and playful. Now he’s running oddly on two legs and it just looks wrong somehow. Feels like the animation is too fast for Lucky’s pace. However, they’ve also changed the burrow animation and this one is for the better! I love how Lucky’s tail pops out of the ground, it looks so cute. Burrowing was one of my favorite features in the original version and its even better in this one.

Mail Mole + ‘Xpress Deliveries

Mail Mole + ‘Xpress Deliveries

My rating: 7/10

Initially the level design is very basic and easy, perfect for getting the hang of the mechanics of this platformer. Each level is slightly more difficult until you complete the set, then also adds new mechanics and consequence with each new area. Very solid, smart design. Keeps the player engaged and challenged and the overall game from feeling stale.

The timing aspect doesn’t have to be taken seriously if you only want the story, which is great for freedom of choice I think. I see they have support now for Leaderboards and a Speedrun timer, not among my concerns but is cool to see. Makes me wonder if the racing segments could be evolved into an online multiplayer racing game? Happy to see the passion from the developers regardless!

Target Audience: More Laid Back Platforming Fans

Summary:

Mail Mole is worth the price of admission, although it’s one of those games that’s focusing on a sub-set of the platforming lovers of the world. Taking strong influence from games such as Super Mario Sunshine, it’s unique underground movement mechanic provides a solid basis for a game that focuses on more straight forward trap avoidance and speed (at times) more then exploration or combat. Level design may be simple, but it allows focus on the minute details of movement and really, that’s what the game really hinges on in the end, and it did provide me fun for the game’s 5 hour or so run time. The environments are pretty but won’t blow you away, and the game seems like a perfect type of game for younger kids to get them introduced to the world of platformers, while still being enjoyable for adults.

Head 2 Head

Head 2 Head

I can’t stop playing this game. After the update that included the head case and rolling for heads I’ve been addicted. Picked the game up just for the style but I love the feel of this game and can’t wait to see future updates. The games combo system is really open ended, basically letting you do anything you try. It’s easy to play but so far it seems really deep too. Has parries like 3rd strike but the game doesn’t require special move motions. Don’t know where it going or how big it will get but I’m really enjoying what’s here. Good music too. Please put in a music player so I can listen to the tracks from options screen or extras menu or something.

Also this game is really fun so you should buy it. Combos feel really good and the game allows for lots of creativity. The music is also great especially once you get farther into survival mode.
