Bionic Commando: Rearmed

Bionic Commando: Rearmed

Bionic Commando was a decent enough arcade action game, when it debuted in 1987. Cartoonish, tricky, demanding, full of genuinely vexing little obstacles here and there. Its NES port, technically a sequel to the arcade game, remains the gold standard “home version that clobbered its arcade counterpart” in my book, adding many more stages, many more enemies and obstacles, and some genuinely hair-bristling cruel and unforgiving claw-swinging physics challenges that made you feel really accomplished when you finally cleared them. Bionic Commando was the first NES game I finished, partly due to being a very late arrival to the NES world, but partly also because it was the first game I owned to seem, frankly, as though its unfolding story justified the work involved. I felt like I’d really accomplished something, the day I finally arrived at that endscreen with Joe’s signature.

Easily one of the best games of the PS3/360 era and from back when Capcom was willing to experiment both with new IPs and with their wide library of existing IPs to the point of reviving old forgotten franchises such as Bionic Commando and Dark Void (With varying results overall) and also from a time where they outsourced a lot of their projects to North American and European companies (In this case, the game was developed by GRIN. A company which eventually transformed into OVERKILL and went on to develop PAYDAY: The Heist on the same engine as this game).

Gauntlet™ Slayer Edition

Gauntlet™ Slayer Edition

Arrowhead was undoubtedly thrilled to apply their mantra to their childhood franchise by quickening the series with a more tactical reboot. They indeed elaborated on the action, but did they make a winning formula, and is this truly Gauntlet?

The Heroes

If your perspective on nostalgia consists of 4 buddies coming together as Warrior, Valkyrie, Wizard, and Elf and challenging the Gauntlet, you’re in for a real treat. Arrowhead’s expansion to them is very worthy! Each possesses nods to their original concept. Merlin’s spells are an absolute joy to wield, and though the others have less to work with, there is elegance in their designs. All are solid, and all depend on player skill and improvisation.

TLDR: Highly recommended, good fun in single player or multiplayer and ok for people who get motion sick from fps or moba style games.

If you’re thinking of getting this game, first thing I suggest you do is look at some gameplay on youtube. I have an indepth overview and review with gameplay here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQe6N-Bjjfo (hour long) and Zerohill has an awesome 20 video playlist you can see here https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLEg-yDRmLEZ1F0zYiE14ciggS71YnssXX

Gekido Kintaro’s Revenge

Gekido Kintaro’s Revenge

Gekido Kintaro’s Revenge is an okay Beat ‘em up game, so it’s time for the story.

After stopping the evil Kintaro, our hero Tetsuo returns to his sensei’s house were all is quiet for a year. But soon his sensei feels a dark, ominous and evil presence returning, he sends Tetsuo to a faraway farming village outside the city to see what it is.

Now let’s talk about the likes. The game play was simple, but fun. Some of the enemies were cool looking. Game was not too hard and the cutscenes were nice to look at. Survive mode in the game was okay.

Real player with 5.3 hrs in game

I was craving a simple beat ‘em up and the colorful retro graphics of Gekido caught my eye. I have to say I sure am glad it wasn’t more expensive as I frankly hate this game. The stages and enemies were designed to make every death feel incredibly cheap and infuriating. Every trap is guaranteed to hit until you know their exact placement ahead of time, and even then it’s a toss as they appear just off the screen so you often can not be precise enough. Both the enemy AI and your own combos tend to place you overlapping an enemy sprite, rendering you incapable of striking that specific enemy regardless of the direction you’re facing, while the said enemy has no issue striking you. The jumps are imprecise and will leave you wondering whether you should keep trying or if the gap really is just too big. The hit boxes on some objects make absolutely no sense (a falling rock will hurt you even though it misses by a half an inch on the screen), and the game even has a habit of forgetting to let you move after you clear the screen of all enemies making you restart the stage. Do yourself a favor and replay Streets of Rage 4 instead if you need a simple but properly made game.

Painkiller Hell & Damnation

Painkiller Hell & Damnation

FIRST: If you don’t have played original Painkiller Black Edition (main base game plus BooH expansion) go now and play it because that’s the real masterpiece!. If you plan on playing only one entry in this huge saga then only play Black and forget about Hell and Damnation. Later you can go for Overdose and maybe Redemption (don’t bother with Resurrection as it is abismal and Recurring Evil it’s really forgettable). If you are on that hardcore rollercoaster of Painkiller saga after playing all of previous recommendations then you can give this a try!

Real player with 49.5 hrs in game

For a start, this game is an absolute copy of the original Painkiller, and because of that, especially If you’re new to the franchise, I’d strongly recommend getting Painkiller - Black Edition instead of this. Reasoning? The original one (here it is on Steam ) has 24 levels + 10 amazing bonus expansion levels, compared to 14 of Hell and Damnation, which were taken from different parts of the original game. That’s much more content for a lesser price.

! Besides, the original Painkiller has the best credits theme ever, but that’s just for my taste. But, if you’re here for a bit better graphics and steam achievements, Hell and Damnation is probably your game of choice. OR IS IT?

Double Dragon: Neon

Double Dragon: Neon

A fun, absurdist beat ‘em up with some glaringly rough edges. Neon is one of the better beat ‘em ups out there, peppered with jokes lampooning its own franchise as well as the ’80s in general, counterbalanced by some irritatingly sloppy pieces. Namely all its cutscenes, ending, and 8 company logos being unskippable. Since so much of the humor is based on novelty, there are a lot of diminishing returns that just aren’t designed for these drawn out, repeat viewings… which the game is centered around with a stat-grinding system.

I’ve read and heard many criticisms about this game and do not quite understand them. I will try and address them and give my opinion as to why this is probably one of the top three Double Dragon games.

**Graphics:

Solid art design, although some of the enemies are a bit more cartoony than previous DD designs, the colors, backgrounds, animations and effects are pretty solid. The game mixes 3D models with the occasional 2D background object, The alley level is particularly nice. Varied environments and enemies with vibrant colors.

Double Dragon Trilogy

Double Dragon Trilogy

At this point in the history of the franchise, you either “get” Double Dragon, or you don’t. This is a side-scrolling beat-em-up in it’s purest and simplest form. You can punch, kick, jump, jump kick, and do a scant few other moves. The enemies you’ll face all have personality, but it’s of the behavior-based variety. The game is challenging, particularly on the Original and Expert difficulties, but can be finished in a short amount of time… even shorter if you become particularly skilled at the game and the nuances in it’s play.

In theory this collection should be a great experience. That’s what I thought when I booted it up. As soon as I tried to adjust the resolution, the game proceeded to crash, forced me to verify files and turn off my virus protection as a content lock occured.

Once I got it back up and running with controls set comfortably on my 360 pad, it worked well. Well enough for what feels like a lazy attempt to wrap three arcade roms into a stand-alone executable.

The Time and Score text overlay is really weird and doesn’t mesh well with the rest of the visuals. The options feel kind of barebones, there’s no intro videos or explanations or anything for any of the games, nothing. People coming into this without knowing about the games will have no idea that you can do super moves, like hitting punch and jump together in DD1 for the game-breaking backwards elbow. Or how DD2’s controls are odd. Or how you can flipping run in DD3 by double tapping move (the previous two games didn’t have it, so unless you did this by accident how would you know?).

Resident Evil 3

Resident Evil 3

Not a bad game, but not a good remake. Should not have been bundled with Resistance and it’s not worth the price they put on it, considering the game is short. The original outfit should have been unlockable, not e preorder bonus. Many memorable locations and enemies are cut from this remake. Defensive mechanics were removed, perhaps because of the dodge moves you can perform. The knife is not destructible, it is nerfed down compared to RE2 Remake and can no longer keep a zombie on the ground. The blue herbs are out the window, so are the ink ribbons, which are not present on harder difficulties. Nemesis is a threat, but doesn’t feel the same way as it did in the original. Why is Carlos the one to visit the RPD? Speaking of visiting, that’s a failed opportunity to extend the game - actually taking a route to the RPD or the Hospital. Instead you just see a cutscene with the characters entering the locations. In my eyes this fails as a remake and has left me with disappointment. I recommend getting this game on sale and only to people who haven’t played the original.

If you played the original RE2 and RE3, and then liked Resident Evil 2 Remake, you might think RE3R is going to be as great as RE2R is, but you would be very wrong. Here are the things done wrong with RE3R compared to original RE3 and RE2R:

  • City streets are all cramped together so area you go through is extremely small, like two city blocks including 3 streets?

  • Mr X worked very well for RE2R because he was around for long time to haunt your progress until you have played the game multiple times and knew the whole game for best tactics, items and map.

Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter

Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter

I have to admit that I like the NON-HD version more than HD one, BUT it has it’s own perks, so both of them good in their way. Some things are exactly alike comparing with non-HD version - gameplay, ost. Some things are different. Anyway - 2nd Encounter HD is better than the 1st SS HD. You wonder why there are not so many reviews? HD version is kind buggy - sometimes achievements work - sometimes they don’t. Sometimes your overall game time works - sometimes don’t. Sometimes even your cloud saves are broken, or your stats shows that your best advanced level is the 2nd while you nearly completed the game. Yeh bugs are the weak sid of the HD rework.

Short version: 79%

Just like the remake of the first game, Second Encounter HD updates the graphics of the old Serious Sam expansion disk, while retaining the fast-paced combat and the great new weapons of the original. Sadly it still can’t make the starting levels any more fun, but the later ones really make up for the slow start.

Long version:

When the remake of Serious Sam: The First Encounter was released, it wasn’t surprising that a similar facelift on the Second Encounter followed.

Secret of Mana

Secret of Mana

I had this game on my wishlist for some time now. I read the comments, and I was really impressed of the huge amount of negative recommendments. But today I decide to check SoM by myself and I invested the 40€.

Here are my first impressions: (will be edited, if necessary)

1. I played SoM in 1994 and later like hell. On the SNES with my best friend, tag team. We have never ever had a game, playing so many hours together in that days before or after SoM. It was just the best! Better than Secrets of Evermore or Lufia.

9/10 A great example of what a remake should be.

I just finished playing my second playthrough of this game, and I am happy to report that throughout my two runs through the game, I never had any of the game crashes or problems that other players have mentioned having, so either the game has been patch-fixed since then, or the game just got along with my computer. In any case, the crashes were my main concern with buying this game, so if you’re on the fence about getting it because of those posts, I would just go for it, because this game has been great.
