Wally and the FANTASTIC PREDATORS

Wally and the FANTASTIC PREDATORS

This game is honestly a ton of fun, very replayable, and as time goes on Boon keeps delivering new reasons to stop in an play it for another long while.

This is one of the few rogue-likes I’ve played where the focus was definitely on the fun, not necessarily the intense planning and stat focus that I’m used to, though that isn’t to say it’s easy! The charm and humor may fool you, but this is definitely the Dark Souls of Nintendo games. (Am I a journalist now?)

The many game-modes, weapons, and options make this one of the most impressive solo-projects I’ve seen. The game does feel a bit rough in some areas, needing a bit more content and polish, but that’s hardly a negative considering the amount of work a single person has poured into this game, and continues to do so.

Wally and the Fantastic Predators has enough potential to eventually stand shoulder to shoulder with games like Gungeon and maybe even Isaac, but it falls short because of technical issues.

Thematically the game is really cute and manages to be funny and tongue-in-cheek in a very charming way, on top of that the game-play seems pretty well designed in the time I’ve played. The overall message is very positive and the game is surprisingly light-hearted for its difficulty. Speaking of which the difficulty options and accessibility options in this game are really good, allowing for a range of difficulties and playstyles.

Super Bunny Man

Super Bunny Man

Say what you want about this game, it is undeniably unique for what it is.

The bizarre. The unexpected. You keep asking yourself “Why” and “How” to all questions below:

  • ___ was this made?

  • ___ is it a game?

  • ___ am I playing this?

  • ___ is it the best thing ever?

…and so on.

Seriously, now. I’ve purchased a few controllers recently for local multiplayer, along with some party games, this being one of them. I’ve played with several different groups of friends, and this is among the most memorable ones, because it is simply unexpected. Weird premise, simple controls, constant “What is going on?” feelings, endless laughter, this game is a masterpiece for what it is. And of course, it’s not for everyone. Graphics are simple, fast to clear all stages if you’re savvy enough, but that is not what this game’s about. This is about the wacky stuff, it’s about the catchy-as-hell menu music, about showing it to your friends and seeing their reaction, about laughing yourself off at the fall death sound, about never having the slightest idea of what you’re trying to accomplish, but ending up doing something impressive anyways(not usually though, most times it’s just a funny failure).

I find this game to be a pretty challenging physics platformer. The controls take a little getting used to, but the stages help learn the motions used to get throughout the game. Co-op is a ton of fun, however both players need enough coins to progress in the later levels. The first half of levels can be done pretty easily co-op, but the later levels I recommend playing solo. Getting the speed challenge with two players can be quite challenging. The party mode, i hardly even touched. I only had one other person to play with so we could only do 1v1s. Though having 4 players total would probably be quite fun. I had quite a fun time mastering the game and finally collecting all 120 coins. I hope to see more updates in the future or a SBM2.

A (precision) platformer with light-weighted puzzles, gentle difficulty curve, wacky plot, and hilarious narration. Especially enjoyable to play with a partner. Last few chapters could be a little bit too difficult though, but nothing insurmountable even for casual players.

Support local multiplayer, but controllers are necessary. Otherwise, you can progress in story mode with your friend in online multiplayer mode. When two computers are on the same WiFi network, the lag is nearly imperceptible.

Struggling

Struggling

The final boss that people have been calling buggy and rage inducing is being reworked sometime in the next week to make it much “less random and less punishing” [EDIT: It is fixed now]. You can chat with the devs and other players on the Struggling discord, and they’re really responsive to player criticism.

Literally every part of the game apart from that boss is incredible: the gameplay, the visuals, the music, the hats, the other bosses, everything. You can play singleplayer or local multiplayer (remote multiplayer with Parsec), and the controls are weirdly intuitive. It takes about 6-8 hours to complete for the first time, but there are so many great bossfights and paradigm shifts that you’ll wanna play again. The game is very replayable since are about 50 hats to collect in secret areas, and each challenge has many ways to be beaten.

Man this game is a BLAST.

The humour in this game is the best, me and my friend were laughing our asses of till the very end. The controls are a bit like the controls of games like getting over it where it doesnt feel unpolished or shitty, you just suck.

All the negative reviews are either from people complaining about there not being online coöp even though there’s apps like parsec that work amazingly with this game (or you just use steams own remote play tho that’s a little buggy if ya ask me), or from people that say the game gets boring after a while even tho the humour and small parts where you gotta actually use your brain and skills keep it fun and hella entertaining.

BFF or Die

BFF or Die

A nice cooperative puzzle game.

CRASHES when trying to use Remote Play Together. This is too bad. I really wanted to try it out with some help from my far-flung friends.

The initial levels of the game are different based on the number of players. If you want to teach friends how to play, I recommend playing the first 7, or so, levels in TWO PLAYER mode. The early levels of other modes might fail to teach important aspects (like how to get out of the flashlight booth).

This could be a nice title for some “Games Night” cooperative frustration, err I mean fun.

The game is like a physical puzzle game but with action elements to it. And if you play multiplayer, the extra dimension of needing to figure out what each player needs to do and when to complete the level. It can get crazy hectic and tense, especially when your teammates mess up or something unexpected happens. But it never feels unfair or too punishing. Plus you always get time to plan at the start of each level / puzzle.

My only criticism is some of the menu options don’t work with keyboard, but nothing that stops you playing the game.

Bonkies

Bonkies

I played this game some while it was in Early Access but waited to play the rest and to review for once it was fully out.

Bonkies is a great couch co-op game that has a great visual style and is a ton of fun. Everyone that I’ve played it with has had a great time. My girlfriend who is not much of a gamer loves it. It’s worked great with Steam’s remote play to play co-op online with other friends.

Even though the single player campaign is definitely not the game’s focus, and it is admittedly short (it took me an hour to Ace it, but new players probably 3-4 hours), I had a great time player the single player campaign as well.

About the game:

Well, the gameplay is pretty simple. Every of the (up to) 4 players is playing one space monkey. Their task is to construct certain “buildings” in a limited time (usually around 3-5 minutes). Unfortunately these space monkeys have a heavy handycap: they all have only one arm. (Not sure who let them be in charge of the construction site but that’s another question).

The game mechanics rely on 50% communication with the other players (since you can’t lift objects very well on yourself alone) telling them where to move, what to do next. The other half is actually some creativity since it’s not always clear how to build these desired objects. You only get a shape of what’s expected and are left alone trying (or imagining) how it fits best.
