Battletoads

Battletoads

TLDR: Divisive visuals but solid gameplay. Different doesn’t mean bad. No online play option.

Battletoads. A popular TMNT clone with a series of games in the 90’s by Rare. Primarily a beat ‘em up with platforming, it did mixup the gameplay throughout the various stages with different genres. An iconic drumbeat would play when the game was paused. It was famously difficult and is still considered one of the hardest games of all time.

After a few cameos in recent years (KI and Shovel Knight cameos are both great) the Battletoads finally get their own game again. The end result is a good game but not without issues.

“If you try and take a cat apart to see how it works, the first thing you have on your hands is a non-working cat.”

~Douglas Adams

What the f*ck did I just… * sigh * OK, I’m not an angry fanboy. An old geezer? Yes. But not an angry fanboy. Actually, the thing is – I was never a big fan of Battletoads. Even though I did grow up with those games and ended up playing and finishing them all eventually (yes, even that less-known Master System version of Battlemaniacs that was only released in Brazil), the only game I really loved was the original NES version of Battletoads / Double Dragon. Now that was the toads at their best! The rest of the stuff… I can see why people loved those games, but personally, I never cared enough. And yet, when Microsoft announced that there’ll be a new Battletoads game? With RARE involved? I was really excited. I mean, the old arcade from 1994, while being pretty short and limited, showed a lot of promise and recent Killer Instinct game that came with Rash’s cameo, proved that they still got it with both the design and the original spirit. Just think about it – a longer version of 1994 arcade (which was the only game in the series that used to include blood, by the way) with juicy design and modern technology behind it. That’s what we’ve been waiting for all these years, right? Right?

DRAGON BALL XENOVERSE

DRAGON BALL XENOVERSE

March 7th: The review has been updated. Check the bottom of the review for more details

Have beaten the game a few days ago. Now, if you are looking for a review with some details, and if you are still not sure whether you should buy this game or not, then read on.

First, many people seem to be talking about the whole connection issues, and yes, it appears you need to be connected to the Xenoverse server in order to even play offline. But do you get disconnected so often that, it is almost unplayable? Not really. Most of the time, the offline mode works without any issues. But usually the online mode is off, and you most likely will end up seeing the message stating that the Xenoverse online is currently off. But yes, this game basically requires you to level up and all anyway (Unfortunately I have not done the online mode yet, so I might add some more to this review when I get my hands on it), so in the end, you should have no problem playing the game, at least the offline mode. And I will explain why the game is made like an MMORPG later in the review.

TLDR: The biggest problem with the game right now is the servers. There are some drawbacks in the gameplay department but the pros outweigh the cons. If you’re a fan of the Dragonball series and the world that Akira Toriyama has created then this game is a must buy. If you don’t really care for Dragonball but are interested in the gameplay it is a solid game but packed with fan service that will probably go over your head. You will also probably be less forgiving of its flaws and may not get enough enjoyment out of the story and the Dragonball world to offset them. Character customization is definatley the high point of the game, everything from looks to stats to skills is up to the player.

Beyond Critical

Beyond Critical

Overview:

Beyond Critical is a sci-fi versus game where players use unique abilities to battle for control over a super massive black hole.

In this game, exploding is the goal, not the end. Players in combat will choose to either grow until they explode or to sacrifice their mass for kinetic projectiles. Players must bend space-time itself in order to win in this unique and chaotic brawler!

Features:

  • 2 or 4 player versus game play.

  • Play as a team or in a free-for-all.

  • 4 unique ability classes.

  • 6 different color options for customization and team selection.

  • Supports Steam Remote Play Together to battle friends across the globe.

  • Beautiful visual effects are complimented by reactive sound design.

  • Full controller support and haptic feedback.

  • Seamless looping sound track with progressive stages.

  • Special ultra-wide monitor support that increases the play space.

  • Optimized for high refresh rate gaming.

  • Customizable arena configurations for varied gameplay and settings.

  • Supports reactive RGB lighting on the PS4 DualShock 4 Controller.

  • Can support a single keyboard and mouse pair with up to three extra controllers.

Ability Classes:

Photon

Lots and lots of lasers…Play as Photon and fire massive laser beams that stun enemies right in their tracks.

Electron

Control time itself…Play as Electron and slow down time for your adversaries and take the lead.

Neutrino

Speed is underrated…Play as Neutrino and fuel high reaction speeds with the ability to teleport in a flash.

Gravitron

No obstacle is too big…Play as Gravitron and push every opponent around with massive bursts of gravitational energy.

Details:

Players will battle for control over a super massive black hole. The goal is to stay on the central black hole to collect mass from it while strategically denying opponents access to it. Players must keep opponents at a distance just long enough to reach critical mass and explode, scoring a point for their team. Players have to be careful while in combat, as firing kinetic projectiles sacrifices large quantities of mass in return for larger projectiles. Reaching critical mass is the only way to score, so players should keep an eye out for micro-black holes that will give them a quick boost. The player or team with the most points at the end of the match is declared the winner.

Developer Note: “This was my first release game and senior seminar project. I spent a little over 16 months working on this title in my free time after class and work. All future content will be added to the game as free DLC. Thank you for all of your support. I hope you enjoy playing Beyond Critical with your friends!"

Additional Notice: Beyond Critical has no influence over the connectivity and quality of the Remote Play Together streaming service. We advise that the host be using a wired connection with at least a 15Mbps upload speed or higher to provide a good experience using the Steam service.

Warning: This is a Co-Op only game and is best played with controllers. There is no single player mode. Only one keyboard and mouse combo is possible at a time, if chosen over full controllers.

DRAGON BALL XENOVERSE 2

DRAGON BALL XENOVERSE 2

A game I have over 700 hours in, made youtube content for and have semi retired from touching now. What do I think of it? It’s all over the place frankly. Some things it does right and others it does awfully, but ultimately it’s the brand name and the concept that keeps it going with players even now.

It’s another 3d arena anime fighter on the surface, but also an action rpg in disguise, It’s one of the few anime properties in the world which is so well known that some don’t even see it even as anime anymore, that’s how normalised it is.

I’m writing this review after the latest DLC that was released. Legendary Pack 2, granting us quite a few new characters, some awesome Skills, and more. The story isn’t bad and from the cliffhanger, it’s not quite done yet… which I’m not sure if it’s distressing or comforting. I love this game, probably more than any other Dragon Ball game that I’ve played. I don’t do PvP for my own personal reasons, but the PvE with PQ’s, the main story, the side stories. It’s all so much fun. But one thing I will say, is maybe it’s time to put the old girl to sleep.

Bloody Zombies

Bloody Zombies

I’ve always enjoyed Double Dragon, Golden Axe, Final Fight and all the classics beat’m up….

This game has all those mechanics that I loved …you could grab the enemies, you could run and hit them, you could pick guns…enemies have different attacks that when mixed will really push you to kill some first before others and other tactics….so …let me tell you guys: THE BEAT’M UP PART IS THERE and IS REALLY FUN TO PLAY!

now…add to that the VR part….wooooow

I’m REALLY ENJOYING IT IN VR but I could show you videos/screenshots and you will not still understand the sensation.

Real player with 16.0 hrs in game

I personally don’t like a brawler type of games and Bloody Zombies is that kind of game. But if you have up to 3 friends under the same roof or over the internet. This game is good fun. There is also an option to play with other Steam users and it is a fun alternative way to play this game.

Too bad when you die and don’t have continues left. You need to start the whole level from the beginning and it is sometimes frustrating and you will beg for better checkpoint to levels (Even one in the middle way of the map)

Kung Fu Strike - The Warrior’s Rise

Kung Fu Strike - The Warrior’s Rise

Not a walk in the park, but even better than the Arkham series if you master everything and I LOVE the Arkham games (check my vids). This is not for the weak-willed. You must be Contra/Dark Souls experienced when coming into this. Definitely needs an online coop option. Mostly goes on sale for $2.50 (As of 2017 I’ve seen it for $.99). Overall underrated and it seems the company’s webpage disappeared recently so we may not see a sequel :(

### Pros:

  • There is a demo. If you enjoy the demo the game is 10x better. If not, no money wasted!

Real player with 160.3 hrs in game

I absolutely LOVE this game.

Is it very deep? Not terribly so. Is there a huge amount of content? Eh, not really. Are all levels fun? Definitely not (bomb levels in specific). But, if the stars align, this is one of the most silly fun games i’ve ever played.

The Swordsman is the absolute pinnacle of my enjoyment. I went from getting absolutely demolished the first 40-50 times, to being able to beat him with no health on the hardest difficulty. You will realize his script. You will know what he is doing, when, and how. And then you will beat him in your sleep. And you would think this is a bad thing, but it really isn’t. Because you actually feel skillful when you get to that point. It won’t be frustrating. It won’t feel cheap.
