Flat Heroes

Flat Heroes

Despite my positive recommendation, I have one major complaint about this game: your avatar is a square that rolls to move.

Hrm… a SQUARE that ROLLS… does anyone else see the problem with the physics of this?

So if you want to move your square just a little bit, you are out of luck because the square will roll back to where you started or will roll further forward than you want if you hit a certain threshold. If your square is tilted in air, you could land on your corner and move into danger. If you land on the edge of a ledge, even if you are flat, if your center of mass is not on the ledge, you can roll off. You can wall cling, but only if one of the sides of your square completely touches the wall, so again, if your square is tilted and you hit the wall with a corner, this can mess you up. I can’t tell you how many times I got fracked by this baffling mechanic. In my humble opinion, it doesn’t make the game any more fun or unique, the game is way too hard otherwise to warrant this extra challenge, and it actually goes against the game’s minimalist street cred (if it were me, I would have made it more like Thomas Was Alone and have the little squares just slide along instead).

I absolutely recommend this game if you like easy-to-get-into platformers, couch co-op, and/or games with subtle depth.

The most recent update as of this review added Survival mode, which is really six modes (each basically an endless mode with the goal being lasting longer than anyone else, but remaining distinct enough to be different modes). This includes a mode called Twitch, which is a Twitch integrated mode that allows the audience to pick the next obstacles the streamer faces. Survival mode(s) in general each have a scoreboard for those who like to get competitive.

In It Together

In It Together

In It Together is a puzzle platformer inspired by classic platforming games that makes you complete puzzles with a lot of different mechanics and with varying difficulty. The game has a lot of content with 50 stages in single player, and 50 more stages in co-op. In addition to this there is a Battle mode, which is really fun to play with friends. The Battle mode has 15 more stages, and several different ways to play, so there is a ton of replayability. If you like platforming games with a bit of challenge this is definitely a game i would recommend picking up. If you want to test out the game before purchasing it i would highly recommend downloading the demo as it lets you get a sense of how the game is played.

So I decided to check this game out as it was made by a YouTuber I used to watch when I was younger, it was cheap and it didn’t seem to get much attention. I’m glad I did because this is a legitimately great puzzle platformer game. Your objective is to go into a small level to collect briefcases and gold bars by picking up and throwing objects that will help you get to your objectives. For example throwing plants to break glass. Sounds pretty simple but each level introduces cool new mechanics and things to pick up that expand on the formula in clever ways, but the level design doesn’t waste any time in getting you to grips with them without ever getting overwhelming, so you’re constantly getting those “aha!” moments you want in a puzzle game without being bored by tutorials or being stuck in the same section for too long. I’m only on World 3 of I believe 5 but I don’t see the game getting any worse (I like it enough to review the game now). The levels themselves are fairly short so it’s a great game to pick up for a bit and put down but it also can be pretty addicting to go for another level right after finishing one. The game also has a pretty cool sense of style with its character designs and white outlines over a dark environment.

Catty & Batty: The Spirit Guide

Catty & Batty: The Spirit Guide

Catty and Batty is a lighthearted game about the friendship of a cat and a bat solving over 50 different puzzles TOGETHER. It fits in a series of indie games I have come to appreciate for their romantic theme, cooperative game-play and casual difficulty which is perfect to introduce computer gaming to your girlfriend. Hand-drawn sprites and original music also provide a special charm.

A wonderful short adventure about Catty and Batty using all the carboard boxes in the world to help a bunch of spirits to get home.

Everything in this game is charming - from hand drawn characters sprites to piano music.

Puzzles are inventive, you getting a new stuff every level, but they’re not hardcore, you can literally complete the whole game in one evening.

A perfect gift to someone you like and an oppotrunity to spend a relaxing and fun night playing it in Co-op.

Duo Defenders - Tower Defense

Duo Defenders - Tower Defense

It’s amazing. It’s beautiful. It’s hilarious. This game was made for Steam Remote Play, but I can’t wait to play it on a TV with a friend! #TeamKoko

Duo Defenders mixes fun co-op gameplay with one of my favorite game genres, tower defense. The tower defense gameplay is delightfully simple, and it feels more focused on team work - you can quickly get overwhelmed if you don’t work together and communicate, but that’s also the fun of it! Levels are pretty well-designed such that each level is a new teamwork challenge. The later levels are daunting for non-gamers, almost wish there was another faster/better character to select if one of the players is struggling, which would make it more casual.

Dad’s Coming

Dad’s Coming

After a whole afternoon at home with your sibling, the kitchen’s a mess, your room’s in disarray, you haven’t hung the laundry: a normal day. SUDDENLY… you see on that phone notification that your dad will be coming home early - you hear the garage screeching and opening and… RUN!! DAD’S COMING!!

Meet Bob, the goofy brother who’s scared and clumsy because he can’t contain the anxiety of thinking about the horrible consequences of his actions - not playing video games for the rest of the night. It’s chilling!

Kate, on the other hand, was born for this. It’s been years of intensive training of putting everything away and pretending she’s asleep while her mother’s on the way from the hallway to her bedroom, never once being discovered! And this time’s not going to be different.

To be able to clean up this mess and pretend that nothing happened you will need to:

  • Cooperate by throwing items between rooms until you place them in their respective places

  • Be careful not to break windows or fragile items like grandma’s urn - your mom won’t be too happy if your grandma breaks twice!

  • Keep an eye on Jack, the siblings’ cat! He is always messing around and knocking things over.

  • Use the means in each house to be even quicker, such as service elevators!

  • Watch out for blackouts when it’s raining! Sometimes you will have to reactivate the circuit breaker!

  • And much more!

Gelly Break Deluxe

Gelly Break Deluxe

I was sponsored to play this for a few hours with a friend, we really enjoyed it and will likely stream it some more. It’s got a clever co-op mechanic and the map design was fun and the soundtrack was also great, though sadly I couldn’t even find it on YouTube. We had a few issues with remote play but it did work and presumably that isn’t an issue on Switch either. Good fun :)

My Review: https://youtu.be/-Ueu03A11gY

I’m already a big fan of 3D Platformers, but one that adds in a twin stick shooting mechanic is not only unique but proves to be a ton of fun! As of writing this, I’m less than halfway through the game, but as a big fan of the genre, this one is doing a lot of things I like already.

There’s beautiful and vibrant graphics, fun boss battles, interesting platforming challenges and of course, a little bit of bullet hell shooting thrown in to mix it all up. The switching mechanic (switching between the 2 main characters) is very interesting as well. While this has been done before, the developer has gone out of their way to implement it so that it pulls double duty being able to break glass, shields and other assorted things.

Ever thought of driving a car at high speed with no brakes at all while trying to solve a map puzzle with road blocks? Well, this game is precisely that… and sometimes “blindfolded”…

For game control, this is a platforming game with a “sliding” movement and we can’t change direction unless we hit a wall, the only single button we could use to control the whole gameplay is spacebar/mouse button for jumping. The rest of the movements are out of our control…

And, the game require precise timing, only giving a few seconds of rooms between each action point… there’s no HP bar in this game, it’s instant death on a single mistake. And death means you have to restart the whole stage again.

Music and sound design

I’m not sure how I feel about the electronic parts of the soundtrack but they’re not common and don’t feel too out of place. Otherwise it fits the game’s atmosphere perfectly. The sounds are good.

Visuals

I like the art style and the way the game looks in general but I’m not a fan of the character animations in cutscenes. It feels kind of clunky.

Controls

You only have one button so it’s as simple as it gets.

Story

Starts off very abruptly and then you get almost no story until you reach the final boss. And even then there isn’t much that’s happening. This is definitely not a selling point of the game.
