Death Rally (Classic)

Death Rally (Classic)

If you haven’t tried Death Rally Classic, you do not know what you are missing. I originally owned this game on a cd before getting the system I have now. I will add this warning. This game won’t play on the El Capitan of Mac Os X software, the closest it comes is Yosemite.

The game runs a lot smoother than it ever did on my Cd and it’s great to relive a classic. Plus there’s an added bonus for all you Duke Nukem fans. He’s one of the selectable drivers in this game and comes with his classic “Hail to the king, baby” lines when he comes in first.

Haven’t played this for damn near twenty years, so it was a pleasant surprise to find it on Steam; for free no less! Iirc, my parent’s crap Gateway had this as demoware, so I could only play a few rounds. Even so, I enjoyed the occasional break from Full Tilt.

Reading through the first several negative reviews, it’s clear a lot of players didn’t didn’t get past the learning curve. This is a game from the 90’s, so go ahead and set the bar accordingly. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy this little morsel from the past:

I’ve just seen all the negative reviews for this game and I had to say something good about it (although I can understand if people were expecting the PC version which I never played personally). This is an amazing game and I’m so happy to be able to play it after so many years! I used to own it on PS1 but god knows what happened to it, probably in the attic somewhere.

For those who don’t know, it’s essentially just a fun little arcade racer with simple controls, challenging AI and an amazing soundtrack. It ran beautifully on my laptop with no issues whatsoever. It’s also compatible with Xbox/PS controllers. Definitely worth the £4 or whatever you’d be paying for it.

It’s not the PC Version, which sucks because this PSX port looks trash with the graphics, but I still bought it because it’s the only version where I can listen to the music properly.

When you press “PLAY” button it opens up a small menu window where you can select Moto Racer 1 - 4. Steam only tracks the menu, not the actual game you play but the menu only last until you select the game so it’s not easy to write a review unless you leave the menu on for awhile.

OK now, on to to more relevant review. Mostly no problem to run on my laptop except Moto Racer 3. The error message leads you to think that it’s a driver or Direct-x problem. Actually it’s a monitor resolution issue. Re-directing output to an external monitor and selecting 1280x960 resolution fixed this. Also might be needed is to manually assign texture memory in the advanced options. Mine had to be set at 256 MB, the default 32 MB didn’t work.

I’m not too sure what people were expecting with this collection, but from the reviews I hvae read, you people have been far too harsh for what it is and when it was made.

Moto Racer 1 is a PS1 game which, I believe, was ported to the PC (or released at the same time as the PS1 version). The graphics are old and it’s going to have the odd glitch and incompatibility now and then. Anyone without common sense should know that your ‘Octa core processor with SLI’d GTX 770s’ would have compatibility issues with a game from the 90s.

Start your Engines and Get Ready to Race with Wacky Wheels! Another great MS-DOS Title from my Childhood! Based on the Super Nintendo’s Famous Mode 7 Engine used on Super Mario Kart. This game is a fun title in which 8 Zoo Animals have escaped on their Go Karts & are now racing for the Wacky Wheels Wheel Cups.

Complete with the Super Wacky Wheels Upgrade which contains Bonus Race Cups, Shootout Zone Arenas. With an Arsenal of Power Up Weapons, 8 Playable Characters…:

Its time to put on your 90s nostalgia goggles and travel back to a time when the kart racing genre was fresh and new. Wacky Wheels is a kart racer with eight anthropomorphic characters, and its one expansion pack which makes for six championship cups, thirty circuits across twenty-five tracks and a dozen more miscellaneous tracks.

To this version’s credit, its a 90s DOS game that’s playable on Steam out-of-the box when other games fail to run even when they include DOSBox. The game scores big points for having native 360 controller support as well. Beyond working as it should, that’s where the compliments end and the reality of a twenty year-old game sets in.

Good, but a flawed version

This likely is the only legal way to get a copy of this game that plays nice with modern systems. It’s worth noting however that it misses the music and doesn’t upscale very well. I experienced some flickering and misplaced “hitboxes” in the wacky menus.

If you can live with that and just want to revisit this classic arcade racer then go ahead, it’s still good fun for an afternoon of nostalgia.

P.S.: Played through Wine on Linux, so displayed playtime isn’t accurate.

Ignition

One of the highlights of my childhood gaming career! :-)

IMPORTANT:

  • Do not activate “Persp. Poly” in “GFX Options” - otherwise the game crashes all the time.

WHY?

  • Why did they remove all the cheat codes and map bugs? Map bugs are ok, but some of the cheat codes were really funny (e.g. view switching, only tires visible, etc.) Please bring them back!

This was my first computer game ever, in Germany its name was “Bleifuss Fun”. 20 years later it is still as much fun as in the past, it’s just a timeless game. Easy controls, simple gameplay. The races against the bots are challenging aswell as the maps; your car can crash down hills or can be smashed by rocks, avalance, etc. what slows you. Regarding the game is from 1997, you cannot expect thousands of cars and maps to select; I think for its age it has just the right ammount of choices.

It works without any problems on windows 7/10 via dos-box which is already applied by steam when you start the game. Thanks for bringing this old game back 3. Playing it on splitscreen-mode with friends gives you really old skool-vibez. Too bad the LAN-mode is disabled, though.

Wow. This brings me back. Instant-buy.

For 3 bucks I could relive a major part of my childhood without fussing with getting my really old copy to run, just launch and go - with controller support (ish)

It’s great. So many great memories and Lance is just too funny. Even today it still plays well.

So for the positives the game does have rebindable keys, and works well with a 360 controller. And the game is at least playable but you can really tell this is the first in the series as it feels like a collection of half finished ideas.

Really it’s more of an on the rail shooter than a true racer, as you only ever 1v1. Add in some bad power up balance as well as limited tracks and cars to unlock.

So although it’s not totally awful and it is at least playable, I would only recommend you pick this up as part of the megarace pack and not on its own as the limited content will quickly wear thin.

N2O: Nitrous Oxide

N2O: Nitrous Oxide

Released in 1998 for the PSX, N20 is a tunnel shooter heavily sold on its soundtrack by famed late 90’s electronica producers, The Crystal Method.

I don’t even listen to techno that much but even the name “The Crystal Method” rings a bit of a bell for me. Turns out their song was in the opening of Splinter Cell, used in a lot of ads and tv commercials well into the mid 2000’s, in some movies (DBZ), and in plenty of video games. They’re not Daft Punk huge, but they do have a legacy.

A lot of your enjoyment of this game is accentuated by the soundtrack (check any of the other reviews). Not that anyone else’s opinion should be relevant on your owns, but this game contains the majority of their first album (with a few remixes). Out of their discography, the first album is generally believed to be their best. And regardless of how it compares to others in the genre or their own history, I concur: the music here is damn good. It’s certainly very 90’s, but it rings something like F-Zero GX’s. Something like

Hell yeah! As awesome as I remember it. Fly down looping tubes and shoot bugs. Great soundtrack. There are a lot more special subweapons than I remember and the scoring system is absolutely clever. It rewards passing enemies in the tube and letting them swap colors and power up and then chaining together enemy kills that share colors. unlike most shooters your score is actually used for something. After each level you use the credits you have accumulated to buy screen clearing bombs or more points, which is like buying more lives. So there is a tension between how much do you think you are going to want to sweep the screen and how much you think you are going to die. There are a lot of little bonuses in each level that can only be earned with specific methods, shooting things in certain orders etc.

STAR WARS™ Episode I Racer

STAR WARS™ Episode I Racer

The best racer of all time. I have hundreds of hours in Racer over the course of 20 years, from the N64, to original PC release, GOG and now finally Steam. Racer is hands down the most enjoyable racing title to date and one of the fastest.

Star Wars Episode I Racer is one of the few good things to come out of the Star Wars Prequels and it’s incredible what they manage to create in such a short time. If you’re seen the film you get the concept, sleds strapped to two giant turbines that go hundreds of miles per hour. It’s simple, but it works thanks to some great gameplay decisions. No items or RNG to screw you out of your win or pick up your slack when you’re losing. It’s all skill while podracing… mostly, but more on that later.

Hello in the childhood! Of all the games I played growing up, this is the one I’d missed the most.

To my delight: it’s just as fun to play when you’re 26 years old as when you’re 6!

Once again I’m speeding through the tracks - through rainforest planets and floating platforms, asteroid prisons and spice mines, frozen worlds and aquatic landscapes and - of course - the infamous Tatooine with its Boonta Classic. Podracers speed delightfully fast, and when the NPCs start to get on my nerves, I’ve got the helpful “Insults” button to scream something back at them in game.
