METAL SLUG 3

METAL SLUG 3

Metal Slug 3 is one of the most highly regarded entries in a classic franchise that, along with Contra, has pretty much defined the “run and gun” sub-genre of action platformers and shmups.

The Metal Slug series has an emphasis on enemies crowding around (collision damage can’t kill you), conservation of power ups, and a variety of vehicles which appear throughout the game and change the way you move and fight for a limited time.

As for MS3 itself, it’s similar to Contra 3 in that it stands on a middle-ground between early platforming heavy run and gun shooters and the “boss fest” design of later games like Contra Hard Corps and Alien Soldier. The game is constantly switching up how you progress through stages, so it’s quite varied. There are also multiple paths through each stage, each of which plays differently.

OVERALL: 9.5/10

The greatest METAL SLUG, while the first game kept a world war II theme throughout the game the second one added more crazyness to the mix, but the third one is litteral insanity ! A masterpiece of a 2D shooter/platform.

GAMEPLAY: 9.5/10

Get yourself a good pad or an arcade stick, boot the game at normal difficulty with 20 credits max and see how you fare against this challenge ! METAL SLUG 3 is like any other METAL SLUG (but a bit harder than other iterations): fast, precise, brutal and unforgiving. Only projectiles, moving tanks/vehicles can hurt you, this is vastly different from your usual 2D game where touching the sprite of an enemy hurts/kills you, this creates a trully unique gameplay. Hectic and chaotic as can be. Combine that with a whole array of weapons,“slugs” such as submarine, helicopter, jet, camel with laser turret or elephant or ostrich LOL ! And the classic slug of course ! Richest Metal Slug in terms gameplay variables. You have got to be tight and aware at all time, classic yet masterfully executed and with that METAL SLUG flair on top of it !

A Year Of Rain

A Year Of Rain

As a Warcraft/Starcraft and Command & Conquer Kid, I was positively surprised to hear there’s someone taking a stab at a new RTS.

It’s heartwarmingly reminiscent of those games. Yeah, let me go grab my fucking Pulitzer, I bet there is a category for stating the obvious. Of course most RTS games are akin to the merciless RTS Emperor sitting on the throne made out of the bones of anyone who dares step into their domain.

Reading it was Daedalic running straight into that chainsaw, I was prepared for another mixed bag.

A Year of Rain

A new, unique RTS that had potential, but due to lack of publisher faith, was crippled at launch and abandoned soon after

So… This game is pretty good. It’s pretty much like a Warcraft 3 spiritual successor. Better than WC3 Reforged in a lot of ways.

As much as I want to love this game however I can’t pretend I’m not disappointed. The game was released unfinished, and abandoned very quickly. I don’t think Daedalic had any faith in it, they released it before it was ready and didn’t even give it a chance to build momentum and customer faith. They were hoping for a big launch with their unfinished early access game, didn’t get it, and abandoned the game rather than wait. As a game dev I understand the circumstance, but you can’t expect an EA title to sell like a finished one. It does come with a beefy campaign, that can be played solo or coop. It has full on voice acting, in game cutscenes, etc. Plus skirmish mode, and of course Online mode. So the content is there, it was mostly finished even, but as expected needed work, which is the whole point of early access. Pathfinding can be pretty bad sometimes, which REALLY hurts the play experience in an RTS. Other than that however the game-play is pretty polished and AYOR really gives WC3 reforged a run for it’s money IMO. I do hate the Coop AI, because I prefer to play solo and I have always hated Coop RTS campaigns with AI allies (like Red Alert 3) but still the game has SO MUCH potential it makes me depressed. I’m just disappointed that Daedalic seemingly launched this game to try and make back as much of their money as possible without ever really planning to support it, they basically lied about it, but in an underhanded way so they could shrug off blame.

Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara

If you’re thinking this is just going to be another double dragon game then like what Captain Tenneal likes to say on the show MXC: “Well, YOU’RE WRONG!!!”

This game incorporates some of the most advanced mechanics you’ve ever seen in any beat-em-up. And mind you these two games came out wayyyy back in 1996. Expect to see: Critical hits in your attacks, spell casting, combos, FOUR PLAYERS!, backstabbing, infinite combos (if you’re good enough), secrets, forked paths, different equiappable weapons, level ups, and unlockable in game perks such as arts, galleries, and even house rules to play around with.

Gather your party before setting forth! Or just yourself. That way you don’t need to see the disappointment in your friend’s eyes as you die to a kobold.

“BY THE ABYSS

- Fighter, every time he falls down. Every time.

Chronicles of Mystara is two ported games with some retro flair - Shadow Over Mystara, which is a cult classic beatemup which has as much accolades as Gary Gygax giving birth to the 20-sided die, and there’s Tower of Doom, which can come too.

They’re coin-op arcade games with a flair for the tabletop, giving you classes, items, branching paths, Tower of Doom even has effects for enemies failing saving throws. All of this makes for a game that’s novel, intricate by nature, and has earned its cult classic status.

You will have to download and install the 1.3 community patch manually. I haven’t played the game as it is (1.2). If the A.I isn’t great with the 1.3 patch then it must be atrocious without it. Link below to 1.3 patch.

What I liked about the game

  • Interesting story. I like the concept behind the game; travelling to different time periods; trying to get to the right one. Episode 2 reminded me of Clash of the titans (1981) and Jason and the Argonauts. I especially liked the boss in episode 2; thought that was pretty cool.

It takes a special game to be this legendarily bad. For starters, the marketing campaign where John Romero will make you his bitch. That alone warrants a 10/10 on Steam’s recommend this game. Daikatana is a first person shooter, made with the Quake 2 engine. If you’re into Quake 2 and speedy running, muddy textures and great gunplay, then chances are this is the game for you.

Since this is a Quake 2 engine game, you’re able to sprint fast, including turning sprint so its always on. If you want to move slow, you’ll crouch and move. You can jump and you’ll need it for some of the precision first person platforming. You’ll tackle run, gun, puzzles, avoid meat grinders and swim.

Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter

Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter

I have to admit that I like the NON-HD version more than HD one, BUT it has it’s own perks, so both of them good in their way. Some things are exactly alike comparing with non-HD version - gameplay, ost. Some things are different. Anyway - 2nd Encounter HD is better than the 1st SS HD. You wonder why there are not so many reviews? HD version is kind buggy - sometimes achievements work - sometimes they don’t. Sometimes your overall game time works - sometimes don’t. Sometimes even your cloud saves are broken, or your stats shows that your best advanced level is the 2nd while you nearly completed the game. Yeh bugs are the weak sid of the HD rework.

Short version: 79%

Just like the remake of the first game, Second Encounter HD updates the graphics of the old Serious Sam expansion disk, while retaining the fast-paced combat and the great new weapons of the original. Sadly it still can’t make the starting levels any more fun, but the later ones really make up for the slow start.

Long version:

When the remake of Serious Sam: The First Encounter was released, it wasn’t surprising that a similar facelift on the Second Encounter followed.

Worms Reloaded is a classic Worms game, It has all the classic weapons, sounds, graphic style. It is missing out on some customizations but it comes closest to the classic Worms games on Linux.

It has all of the elements of the classic Worms formula, The Weapons, The sound effects, The speechbank, the Team Customization, The Single Player Campaign, The only thing I am missing is the heavy game mode customization like we had in Armageddon and World Party. It still has the game mode customization but it is very limited in comparison.

Counter-Strike: Condition Zero

Counter-Strike: Condition Zero

Counter-Strike: Condition Zero

An Iconic title among the line of the legendary series of Counterstrike games. Counter-Strike: Condition Zero (CS: CZ) a first-person shooter, action, multiplayer video game and the sequel to the original Counter-Strike. The game was released in 2004 via both retail stores and Steam and uses the GoldSrc engine. Published and developed by Valve.

Unlike other Counter-Strike games Counter-Strike: Condition Zero (CS: CZ) comes with a single-player mission pack with the player unlocking maps and more.

Real player with 588.1 hrs in game

Counter-Strike: Condition Zero is an expansion pack and, in a sense, a visual upgrade for Counter-Strike 1.6, with more HD looking models and new detail textures, which were created for the game’s exclusive maps for a better graphical experience, but there’s more than meets the eye.

CS:CZ introduced a campaign mode, called the Tour of Duty, which is treated as a single-player experience, consisting of tasks that the player must complete if they want to advance to the next mission. The Tour of Duty campaign consists of 6 chapters, called “tours”, with each tour containing 3 maps (missions) in it. In order to efficiently play against the enemy team and be able to have a chance on winning them, it is strongly recommended/most definitely essential that one recruits members for their team, though that comes with a cost. The amount/skill-strength of soldiers that the player is able to recruit is determined by Reputation Points, which are gained by completing missions (though some are also granted to the player at the beginning of the tour, and the amount depends on the difficulty chosen). In general the campaign is pretty easy to learn and while it can sometimes be frustrating due to either some ridiculous tasks (especially in harder difficulties) or just the difficulty of the game itself, it’s still a fun and addictive experience.

Classic Review

Stargate or: Mass Mummification

Without a shadow of doubt Serious Sam refers to the genre’s roots. The game pays homage to classic 90’s shooters such as Doom, Quake or Unreal. Based mainly on the Duke Nukem, designers from Croteam proudly entered the 21st century, because it was one of the first titles offering the players quite an open world. Setting placed in the Ancient Egypt allows us small exploration of the locations.

This review is a little lengthy, so if you want a quick summary of why I recommend Serious Sam HD The First Encounter skip to Results and read from there.

Croteam makes a smash and they do it without any logic, realism, or sense.

The Campaign:

Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter is an epic game which takes place in Ancient Egypt. This first person shooter is based in the future where the world is about to be destroyed by the monster Mental. All hope is lost until we discover that the way to defeat these monsters can be traced from our past. Further research reveals that humanity has discovered an ancient race the Sirians who had also fought and lost to Mental’s might. Humanity finds the ancient Sirian technology known as the Time-Lock which can allow one person to traverse time and space. Our protagonist Sam, who may be very serious, is a champion, a hero, and a legend for humanity. Fighting off every alien he encounters to the end Sam, a true warrior, is given the ultimate task. To use the Time-Lock to travel back in time and to defeat Mental while he is busy dealing with the Sirians.

Star Boy

Star Boy

The evil sorceress Refinnej has sent her minions to infest space and time. There is only one team that can stop her and that’s Starboy and the Star Warriors “Que Theme song” (to be honest with you, I still don’t know what this game is about, so I used some of the description on the storepage).

Graphics

I’ve seen these type of graphics before (Nepenthe, Not COD, Hero Boy, and Escape Doodleland), but when it comes to starboy, it doesn’t give me that awesome feeling i have for hand-drawn games. The playable characters and the levels lack interest and appeal, but some of the enemies are actually well drawn, the game feels like it was tacked on and rushed. The developer told me that it took 2 years in making this game frame by frame, honestly, I’ve seen 5-year-olds do better than this game….”GunMan Taco Truck”.

8-Bit Commando

We wanted the best, you know the rest.

A Contra look-alike, that does not stand to its predecessor. But is it THAT bad? Let’s find out! The game greets you with a nice soundrack and pretty good 8-bit graphics. Unfortunately the gameplay is ruined by bad controls especially in terms of jumping. And when you can’t land on a platform becouse of fucked up controls - you know that this game has an issue. A prefect run can be ruined by a single jump and then it’s back to the beggining or nearest check point (THANKS GOD FOR THAT). Also this game has a TIMER. And when such slow-paste game makes you rush the level becouse of the mistakes you made before - it doesnt’t help the situation at all. At least it has decent multiplayer.

–-

Rather than improving upon Contra / Probotector-games due better tech nowadays, this game just feels cumbersome (I really don’t have more fitting word here).

Main reason why I don’t recommend buying this game due how blatantly unfair this game is.

Note, this doesn’t mean you wouldn’t be able to beat this game. But it is still still unfair.

  • First of, and the majour flaw: The checkpoint-system is for the most part pointless / not worth it. In fact, it is just better to restart the the whole stage most of the times since they’re really short.
