Metal Fatigue

Metal Fatigue

As an oppressed minority I find this game extremely offensive. It is overly patriarchal to refer to the aliens as ‘Hedoth’. The developers should have respected individuals rights to self identification and referred to them as ‘Theydoth’.

In all seriousness though, amazing game. Only a few complaints.

First, there is no multiplayer integration with steam, so in order to play with friends you need to get a VPN and arrange it like an old school LAN game. Also, in order to get said VPN games to work we have had to disable our public firewalls during gameplay which is a bit dodgy.

Great game, if the controls and the graphics would get an overhaul, this could easily be a good modern title. The gameplay itself is still amazing.

You have 3 different fighting planes: Underground, ground and orbit.

Subterranean fights only allow for vehicles, such as tanks. Most of the times, you start with a very small area to fight/build in, but with Drill-vehicles, you can make some space, for buildings, for sneak attacks, for a lot. You can switch planes by building elevators, that are being built by Drillers.

Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri

Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri

Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri was an immeasurably revolutionary computer game released in 1996.

Terra Nova established the outdoor first person shooter genre with extreme render distances and advanced physics modelling including gravity simulation, water reflections, player movement systems, and weather conditions. Terra Nova also pioneered and perfected squad commanding in an fps environment, with competent, realistic bots. The squad members performed the player’s exact commands, ranging from movement options, tactics, engagement techniques, and special abilities. Terra Nova even pioneered exosuit simulators, inspiring the Tribe series of fps’s. It is a very technical simulation, with the missions requiring strategic planning, in outfitting the squad with weapons, suits, pilots, and, “alternative suit functions.” Alternate Suit Functions, or A.S.F.’s, permitted an operator to perform an ability, including deploying sentry turrets, additional suit shields, demolition explosives, power plants, repair modules, cloaking, and other abilities. On most missions, the player had to rely on the bots to perform tasks for the player, either defending a structure, destroying enemy fortifications, and scouting. The player managed all of these tasks via three multi-function displays, similarly to an aerospace fighter jet. The player had access to a powerful and immersive mapping program, drones, damage outputs, and A.S.F. controls. The player also had access to jump jets. Jump jets were integral to gameplay, allowing for mountains to be scaled with ease and impossible maneuvers to be performed.

18-09-2016: Updated review after second playthrough: added some lines, fixed a few errors.

This review does not go into details of how the game works, nor does it mention everything. It only broadly explains what you can expect when playing it.

So, one would hear about this game, and would at first glance think: Well, this game looks interesting, let’s give it a try, right? It’s made by Looking Glass after all! (sounds a whole lot like me ;)

And then you play it. Holy crap, this game is amazing. Complexity unlike i’ve ever seen before, to the point that I have learned so much to fill a whole game at my second playthrough alone. one of the best soundtracks i’ve ever heard (albeit pretty biased), a story that starts very cheesy but then keeps punching you in the face with plot-twists and the gameplay is nothing short of excellent either.

tl;dr: Arcade Armored Core. Fast, furious mech action with a ton of customization, lots of hidden depth, and a focus on old school arcade-style high score chasing and replayability.

Yeah, yeah, President of the United States in a giant robot, blow up America for great justice. If you’re looking at this store page, you already know the bonkers pitch, and you probably know that the tone of the game really is as ridiculous as it sounds. But how does it play?

You control an ultra-agile mech running, jumping, boosting and flying around to complete objectives that are all fundamentally “blow up something or other.” Early levels may have you blow up all the enemy encampments in an area, but later levels can involve racing through a timed sequence to blow up a reactor, or playing hide and seek with a giant spider mech to blow up its power station (and then blow up the mech itself), or fighting against a group of enemy mechs in order to blow them up. Though all this might seem repetitive, the level designs and subtle differences in how you’re expected to blow things up really do give each level a distinct feel, and the sheer act of blowing things up never stops feeling great.

A bare-bones re-release and remaster of the game with a few issues (including a locked frame-rate due to its console origins) but aside from that, it should run on a toaster and is perhaps one of the craziest, most nonsensical and downright ridiculous mecha games around, done by From Software nonetheless. The story is pure unadulterated insanity or how Japan views or thinks the US works. Dialogue here is above the proverbial “so bad it’s good”: this is voiced, people SPOKE those lines. You just don’t get this level of madness anymore and I applaud them for it.

Slave Zero

Slave Zero

Slave Zero is a Underrated Third-Person Shooter.

I’ve decided to rewrite this review because my old one was kind of crap but also it’s this game’s 20th Anniversary which is actually “October 31st, 1999”, and also I love this game.

Slave Zero is Fu*king Awesome, an example of an Underrated Classic that needs to be Revived or Remastered. In this game you play as a giant robot called Slave Zero, smashing up cars, buildings, and destroying other robots. This is one of the first games that has came up with this concept and it still works great today.

It is hard for me to write about this game since I undoubtedly view it through nostalgia goggles, but I believe it still holds up quite well today. The game is very fun to play with great controls, a great variety of enemies, and beautifully designed futuristic areas.

I’ve noticed a lot of people comment on the story. The story is there purely for story’s sake — it is the glue that ties all the missions together. Don’t expect any intricate character development, or any sort of interaction among the characters whatsoever. Most of the exposition is presented at the very start of the game in the opening sequence and that’s that. The hero of the game, Ch’an, doesn’t communicate much with the rest of the cast - he merely executes Guardians' (the rebels) orders. This can be either good or bad depending on your preferences. If you’re the kind of player that likes to assume the role of the protagonist - then this is the game for you - but on the other hand, it is hard to have some clear idea in terms of what Ch’an is like. The intro states that “Ch’an must permanently merge with the Slave,” meaning he’s doomed to stay inside the robot for all eternity Neon Genesis Evangelion style. It would be interesting to read about his backstory, but the game is so fast paced and focused on bringing down Sovkhan that there’s never really any time to address that. It is only near the end of the game, during the final mission, when Sovkhan reveals (spoiler alert!) that he murdered Ch’an’s father which possibly explains Ch’an’s decision to permanently merge with the robot. Unfortunately, since the plot never really makes you feel invested in the characters, this grand revelation felt very underwhelming and anticlimatic. But you don’t play Slave Zero for the story! It is the fast-paced action packed gameplay, one of a kind atmosphere, amazingly intricate boss fights, and great atmospheric music that makes the game what it is. All in all, It is a great cyberpunk adventure that is still very fun to play now.

Shogo: Mobile Armor Division

Shogo: Mobile Armor Division

Shogo Mobile Armor Division is a first person shooter created by Monolith and was the very first game to use the Lithtech engine. It’s a rather unique game stylistically and in terms of concept. You play as a pilot named Sanjuro who both controls a mech suit and fights on foot in a war against other mechs.

Shogo is heavily inspired by Japanese anime. To the point where I think it harms the game overall. The game looks very ugly visually and you can especially see it with the characters, who all look overly cartoony and somewhat disturbing. The story is also rather confusing and convoluted. It’s not helped by how all of the characters come off as overly obnoxious, especially the main character. I understand it’s to fit the style of the game but it feels really cringey while playing. However the soundtrack is fairly decent and does match the style of the levels pretty well.

Real player with 10.8 hrs in game

Awesome game, but very difficult to make it run on modern systems. You have to fix no mouse recognision, missing soundtrack, windowed mode, often crashes and abysmal performance.

You can increase fps a lot by disabling crosshair, look at Steam guides for other fixes.

Anyways the game itself is truly awesome, fun combat, pretty good level design that still hasn’t dated too bad, nice weapon variety and multiple choices you can make that may lead to different levels. Combat is heavily unbalanced, but not broken.

Review

+ Merits:

If you are in a hurry and want to play a video game expeditiously, then I recommend Vanquish. It’s a relentless, fast-paced game that will fill-up your adrenaline to the maximum level with its intensive gameplay. Combine Bayonetta with Gears of War, and you will have something that resembles Vanquish, a fast-moving, cover-based shooter with some QTEs. From the third-person perspective, you control Sam Gideon, a guy augmented with a cool battle suit that’s powered by a portable reactor. It gives him post-human capabilities and grants us a stupendous warfare experience with its boosted slide and slow-motion mechanism.

Real player with 51.6 hrs in game

At first blush, Vanquish is another third person cover-based shooter. But if you’re familiar with those deranged perverts over at Platinum Games, you should be instantly suspicious. This is a studio who is concerned primarily with making new IPs with new gameplay paradigms, and Vanquish is no exception.

Many reviewers have already discussed the general premise of the game, so I will spare you those details except to remind you that Vanquish is about Big Boss fighting robots in space using a rocket-powered mecha suit; he shoots, he slides on the floor like an idiot, he slows down time. Instead, I want to address the core philosophy behind this game (as I see it) and explain why I find it fun.

I find it’ll be easier and less messy if I just put this as a Pro’s and Con’s list rather than an essay type review. At least for the most part.

The Pro’s:

-The graphics are quite good (player models, environments, etc), even by today’s standards.

-Similarly, lighting and shadows are similarly fantastic.

-The voice acting is quite good as well. Notable actors such as Jen Taylor (Halo Series), Phil LaMarr (Halo, Metal Gear Solid Series) and John Patrick Lowrie (Half Life 2, Team Fortress 2) make an appearance in this game.

Supreme Commander 2

Supreme Commander 2

As a stand-alone game it is amazing. But compared to the previous to Supreme Commander games this is a major step down. Remember how there were huge tech trees? such as the tier one factory can upgrade to the teir two which unlocked more units, well thats all gone. Instead now you build a research station which slowly gains research points which you use to upgrade your units not unlock new ones. Remember how you could choose a commander to start the game with? well now it is story based so you have to play the commanders in order (UEF, AEON the Cybran). Explosions are amazingly downgraded aswell. Remember the satisfaction of destroying a commander and watching a huge nuclear blast spread and destroy their base? Well now the commander explodes in a small blast and and all the oppents units die at once. Also all of the experimental units are extremely nerfed remember the AEON saucer? now it is smaller and much weaker, send 7 intercepters at it and it’s gone. The Cybran spider bot has been turned into a crappy little beetle bot which are so easy to defeat they’re in the first mission. All shields are the same size now (small, unless your counting huge UEF shield in the DLC) and instead of them all blocking shots the Aeon and Cybran shields let 15% of shots through! and now all shields look the same aswell. But the most annoying thing, the most annoying thing of them all is that everything you build counts as a unit. No more unlimited turrent defences, no unlimited shield protection and no more complex base defences. If you’re reading this review before buying the previous games then buy this game first or dont buy it at all
