Mashed

Mashed

The fantastic Mashed lacks much in the way of plot, set-up or subtlety at all, but it proves that such things are wholly unnecessarily for a racing game that is this much fun and whimsically cathartic – the premise is simple; as any one of six colour-coded vehicles, outlast a number of opponents while navigating richly detailed maps at top speed and armed with a wide array of utilisable ordnance.

That premise is only the beginning of a highly-replayable core concept, first thing you’ll want to try is the “Challenge Cup” campaign mode, which incorporates every map and every gamemode in roughly a difficulty curve to showcase the immense variety of experiences the game has: completing bronze, silver, and gold challenges on each map will unlock more and more playtypes, vehicles and maps for the campaign, while also unlocking new possibilities in the “Quick Play” casual mode with both pick-up singleplayer, cooperative- and competitive multiplayer.

“Mashed? MASHED POTATOES!”

When I was little I bought this title off the Xplosiv publisher and must admit that its by far the most amazing top-down game I’ve ever played and felt that I have spent my money right with this title. Played multiplayer with my cousin on the same screen and the insults were undeniably the most outrageous and funny ones. You’ll get called a dumb cookie crumb and so forth, which adds even more icing to the cake.

Yet, the whole sad thing about this is the fact that this is Drive to Survive, not Fully Loaded so there’s not any improvement to the gameplay and I’ve stated the bugs you’ll encounter while playing.

River City Melee Mach!!

River City Melee Mach!!

It mostly reuses the same engine from Super Sports Challenge, but instead of several events it’s all-out fighting with a few new features. While that means it isn’t the most ambitious game on the devs' part, it’s still more of the proven good gameplay. Lots of characters, moves, and unlockables. Each team has a different storyline, and semi-randomized opponents adds a LOT of replay value. On the downside of things, the keyboard layout shares the same flaws as Super Sports Challenge (U, J, O… and cannot be remapped) but at least the controls are responsive. Controller support also looks grim, but if you can circumvent this with JoyToKey (or something similar), this game is lots of fun!

At first I have given a negative feedback to this game considering how I loved the Kunio series soo much, because the ai in endless mod was not responding. The good news is there is a small change in that. Developers are active, and I appreciate that

GUILTY GEAR

GUILTY GEAR

I recommend this game ONLY to people who love Guilty Gear. If you’re just getting into the series, please for the Love of God start with Xrd or Accent Core.

This game is a 100% port of the original Guilty Gear for the PS1, and being a direct port is both it’s greatest strength and flaw. It’s a tough as nails fighter with mechanics that were questionable even during it’s release back in 1998. For example, you have two health bars per round, once one goes away you can just spam your Overdrive move an unlimited amount of times. Testament has a poison mechanic here that he has in other games, but the poison doesn’t stop at the magic pixel, it flat out KO’s you. The dust and instant kill mechanics that are popular in the series work VERY different here. There isn’t a dedicated dust button but there also isn’t a dedicated way to perform them, like pressing both Slash and Heavy Slash worked on X. Some character moves seem to do it on their own (I’ve seen May’s somersault move hit me with a Dust) In every game after this one, an Instant Kill only gave you a round. If you missed your instant kill, you lost your entire super meter and couldn’t instant kill for the rest of the round This game? You press Punch and Kick at the same time, hit the opponent, then if you input hadouken before the victim breaks free, you win the whole fricken match. If your opponent breaks free you can just freely try throwing out your instant kill to win again. Be warned, you can just as easily lose both rounds. This game is the only one in the franchise in which the AI also throws out Instant Kills. You still have your unlockable Justice, Testament and Baiken, however, just like the original release, you can ONLY use them in 2 player VS matches. This game unlike the future installments, does not feature a free battle mode to fight against a CPU opponents and lacks online multiplayer. The game loads very fast to the point where you can barely see the VS Screen with their movelist, thankfully pausing in this game lets you bring up your character’s move list.

Guilty Gear: The Missing Link (Japan) is the very first game in the series that was on the original PlayStation console around 1998/99. Guilty Gear is an anime fighting game that has a more dark atmosphere to it aside from the cartoony art style and heavy metal music. Now I have played this game before and it’s my favorite one of the series, though the other installments I like as well. Guilty Gears is pretty fun to play against CPUs and with a friend. The game does not have the option to change difficulty. The difficulty is adaptive depending what stage you are on. From Stage 1 being the easiest and to Stage 10 being the most difficult. The game offers 10 playable characters to play as, and picking one of them you will battle against the other 9 in Stages 1-9 and lastly one of three bosses at Stage 10. Each character has their own fighting style, special abilities, as well as their weapons. The game features a Chaos Mode which is activated when a fighter’s health is at half point (Yellow Health). A red aura will surround the character and he/she is able to perform unlimited Chaos Attacks. All character possess an Instant Kill maneuver that will basically kill the opponent resulting an instant win even when the match just started at round 1. Some of these Instant Kills are more violent and brutal than others, with the exception of May’s Instant Kill having a different version of template being more kid friendly. They are the most powerful moves and you must commit quickly before missing the moment, or the opponent defends the attack. Basically press punch+kick at the same time and if it connects Sakkai (red screen) is activated for a moment, then roll the joystick down to right (if facing right) and an attack button to finish the sequence. If done successfully, you will see many cues and visual effects occur on screen. First usually is the attack the character will perform, followed by the Destroyed!! template will appear on screen, an audio cue that will say “Destroyed”, then the opponent’s Health flashes red and black while depleting resulting in a successful kill. Generally, this game has been one of my favorites since a child and it’s super fun. With my most played character as May since she is the youngest fighter and probably one of the difficult fighters to learn. I really recommend this if you missed this game or into fighting games and like to experience this classic.

Ignition

One of the highlights of my childhood gaming career! :-)

IMPORTANT:

  • Do not activate “Persp. Poly” in “GFX Options” - otherwise the game crashes all the time.

WHY?

  • Why did they remove all the cheat codes and map bugs? Map bugs are ok, but some of the cheat codes were really funny (e.g. view switching, only tires visible, etc.) Please bring them back!

This was my first computer game ever, in Germany its name was “Bleifuss Fun”. 20 years later it is still as much fun as in the past, it’s just a timeless game. Easy controls, simple gameplay. The races against the bots are challenging aswell as the maps; your car can crash down hills or can be smashed by rocks, avalance, etc. what slows you. Regarding the game is from 1997, you cannot expect thousands of cars and maps to select; I think for its age it has just the right ammount of choices.

It works without any problems on windows 7/10 via dos-box which is already applied by steam when you start the game. Thanks for bringing this old game back 3. Playing it on splitscreen-mode with friends gives you really old skool-vibez. Too bad the LAN-mode is disabled, though.

Archon Classic

Archon Classic

For those of you who grew up playing the original Archon, you will be glad to know this one exists. It has everything the old game did, and offers a lot of improvements. The major thing being secondary attacks. Those were first introduced in Archon Ultra, and these are somewhat similar. There is also the ability to play on different maps some are dependant upon the number of players. ( You can have 4! :D) There is the classic Archon map, maps that allow your guys to level up to level 3, and maps that have runes that provide benefits when you move onto them.

Archon Classic is a game made by Archon fans for Archon fans to enjoy. I played the NES version and Archon Ultra for MS-DOS, always thinking: “This is a nice game, but imagine how cool would it be if…”. No matter how that sentence finishes, Archon Classic will bring it alongside nostalgia and a modern touch.

This is a chess-like game where pieces of Light and Dark fight each other in real-time battles. Of course, most of the game’s strategy is on the board, where the turn-based portion takes place. If you’re a regular chess player, you’ll probably start thinking about openings, forks, movement block, waste of time, zugzwang and other well-known elements of chess.

Worms Reloaded is a classic Worms game, It has all the classic weapons, sounds, graphic style. It is missing out on some customizations but it comes closest to the classic Worms games on Linux.

It has all of the elements of the classic Worms formula, The Weapons, The sound effects, The speechbank, the Team Customization, The Single Player Campaign, The only thing I am missing is the heavy game mode customization like we had in Armageddon and World Party. It still has the game mode customization but it is very limited in comparison.

Fight’N Rage

Fight’N Rage

Good game overall, takes a lot of things from classics maybe to the point where it starts hurting the game own identity.

Gameplay is a mix of classic beat-em-up with a few mechanics from fighting games, most enemies are archetypes you will recognize if you’ve played SoR1-3 and Final Fight, also features branching levels.

Has a fairly spiky difficulty curve (some level branches in particular are much harder) and has a really high difficulty ceiling (less so than say SoR2 but not by much), lower difficulties accessible enough for most to have some fun (especially easy mode which is almost insultingly easy), difficulty curve turns to a cliff once you start looking past hard mode which means most won’t ever see the last two difficulty levels.

Being a child of the 80’s and 90’s, there was no shortage of beat em‘ up games. Titles such as Streets of Rage, Final Fight, and Double Dragon were all the rage and kept you entertained for hours on end. Sadly, the current gaming landscape is nearly devoid of games such as these. Outside of a few gems that are still years old, beat em’ ups are pretty much dead. Thankfully, Indie developers don’t know this and are still cranking them out. This is where Fight’N Rage comes in!

I only recently heard about Fight’N Rage, and that was only due to me looking at another game – which I won’t mention. Instead, I began to see comments about a little-known game in development. One that had quite the following. My interest piqued, I started to search for the game and found little information. Buried beneath dead websites and Reddit posts, I found the name of the developer and the title – Fight’N Rage. A game that inspired by countless Beat ’em up titles from the past and puts a spin on it. There are references to those games littered everywhere as well.

Worms World Party Remastered

Worms World Party Remastered

Worms World Party is a good game - is the remastered version 14 years later a good game?

In comparison it is sad, how low the effort of work is, that was put into this game.

Besides of the low res menu and the multiplayer browser, that is worse then the first battle.net from starcraft, things like 60fps are a joke, if it get’s so serious drops on my laptop, that handles games like cs:go and skyrim easily, that even my keyboard inputs are not noted properly. Double Enter and Backspace becomes single enter and backspace all the time. And that’s just for these controls. The other controls don’t work any better. For the AI it works kind of smooth, but if it’s my turn, the game is going dooowwnnn…

This is my first ever review. I do not consider myself a negative or toxic person, but this “remastered” version is bringing out the worst part of me.

Me and my mates have been playing Worms World Party on LAN for ages now. We’ve used the original version, and that have been troublesome and exhausting at times. But more often than not we managed to pull through all the nonsense and actually have fun. We were very happy to see that Team 17 was going to release a remastered version and put it on Steam. We really didn’t care much about the updated graphics, we just wanted to enjoy this little gem over the internet.

Atari Vault

Atari Vault

This review is going to be an unusual one as I’m actually going to write about a game that’s ate up a lot of my ingame time so far. I speak of Atari’s 1982 Gravitar.

I picked up Gravitar in passing whilst trying the Atari Vault and my first reaction likely followed many people’s, “This… is really hard. I think I’d rather play something I’m familiar with like Centipede or Missile Command instead.” This stayed true until I crossed paths with the Atari 2600 version of Gravitar. “I remember Gravitar was hard, I’ll see how the 2600 version is.” It was actually easier in the sense the gravity was not as quick to drag you under…but difficult in that many tunnels and small gaps were introduced in the absence of sharp vector graphics. With persistence I became good at it and with preserverance I looped through the game’s four universes. I was impressed with the game and quickly returned to arcade Gravitar to see if I had misunderstood a challenging but skill rewarding game.

Edit: Since an update came out to issue black screen/control issues present on release for some, I have to mention that here. So if you read a review writing about control issues, be aware that most of them are patched already.

Ever wondered if could you play Pong against one of your friends online? Loved watching Sega Fanboy Mark of Classic Game Room playing Centipede and Missile Command and eagered to do the same? Well, now you can. And it would be a huge mistake not to do that.
