Extreme-G 2

Extreme-G 2

This is a game that requires patience in learning its quirks, the sometimes wonky bike physics and controls, but rewards you immensely if you persevere. And this is coming from someone who plays using a keyboard and is fundamentally bad at racing games.

There are a few bugs here and there (nothing game-breaking: just don’t decline a save when you’re offered one, or the game might stop offering), and I should elaborate on the wonkiness. The bikes are very fond of turning sideways or even backwards upon collision with a badly shaped wall or other bikes. Sometimes you might grind along a wall no problem, and sometimes you might snag on something and get turned around. The controls for left and right like reversing themselves at this point, as well as the gas pedal just kinda breaking, but you learn to deal with this very quickly (hint: it’s good to let go of all buttons briefly and then try moving again).

For the 2.50€ I paid for it is probably worth it. Mind that the controller support is still the worst of any steam games that I own and took some digging through the forums to find an acceptable solution. Not a decent one, but an acceptable one.

Well, I suppose that on the plus side the game actually works with decent frame rates and the WHOLE soundtrack catalogue from XG1 - 3 and both N64 and PC versions of the soundtrack is present. The soundtrack alone may justify the price tag.

But the controller support is bad, euphemistically speaking. There is no controller support in the menus, so no relaxed gaming on your TV. To get my XBone controller working, I had to set all executables to “run as admin”, then select the controller in the pre-game menu (which I have to start around 3 times on win 10 to actually start the game), then navigate to bike selection, press space bar and config my controller buttons. Shoulder Triggers are not being recognized. It’s a hassle that reeks of a lazy port. Like, every N64 emulator does this better and the only reason this version may continue to exist is stable framerates.

Freedom to upgrade anything you want, however you want, and whenever you want! This game is the only game that allows such freedom, I have yet to play any strategy game with such freedom to upgrade. Because of this base building is fun, your upgraded turrets kill everything at a distance allowing you to just build to your hearts content. There are 2 ways to upgrade, gold for instant upgrade and research buildings which take a number of turns. AI is not to bad and will rush you if you have poor defenses early on. However once you have built a strong base with a number of long range missiles and anti air defenses, the AI attacks on your base becomes easy to defeat. Despite how old a game this is, it is still the best base building game that i come back to when i have the itch to build a base.

Space Quest™ Collection

Space Quest™ Collection

A Collection of 6 Space Quest titles released from 1986-1995. It’s a great Inventory Adventure series that Sierra On-Line created back when MS-DOS & Windows 3.1/95/98 was still by popular demand.

In Space Quest 1 - The Sarien Encounter:

Roger Wilco is one of the most important men on the starship Arcada: he is the janitor! Just when he was doing what he does best (dozing off in a closet), the shrill sound of an alarm penetrated the air. Arcada is attacked by the evil Sariens! Before Roger realizes what is going on, he discovers that he is the only survivor. The Sariens have killed the entire crew and stolen the valuable Star Generator. Roger’s immediate task is to find a way to leave Arcada, which is about to explode in fifteen minutes. And then he’ll have to show the Sariens why they should never mess with brave intergalactic janitors!

Recommendation:

I heartily enjoyed the Space Quest Collection, but they won’t be everyone’s jam. These games are ‘classics’ in the sense that they’re old, and filled with design decisions that may frustrate the unprepared. If you are looking for sci-fi adventure games to enjoy then I would recommend the Space Quest Collection if:

  • You have the mindset of an archeologist. If you are interested in the history of video games, and want to experience older graphics and gameplay conventions then you’ll find a lot to appreciate.

Omikron: The Nomad Soul

Omikron: The Nomad Soul

Omikron: The Nomad Soul has a very in-depth plot and constantly tries to break the fourth wall (whether it works or not) in order to convince you that your soul has been trapped inside the world of Omikron and that your soul and very existence outside the game is at stake in regards to the antagonist, the demon known as Astaroth. The characters you interact with in the main story are fleshed out in their own rights, some more than others. The player is able to interact with certain people at certain parts of the game and depending on what you say will determine what the character will reply with.

(Sorry, nie będzie polskiej wersji, nie mieści się. Chciałem umieścić w komentarzach ale jest limit 1000 znaków)

Omikron: The Nomad Soul is the first game of the Quantic Dream studio. It might as well be considered three games in one. For the major part of the gameplay it remains a TPP adventure game relying on the usual stuff: talking with NPCs and using items. Occasionally it switches to FPP shooter or hand to hand 1 on 1 brawler kind of similar to early instalments of the Tekken or Virtua Fighter series. It is worth mentioning that all of these are made pretty solid and none of them feels like it was forced into the gameplay without a reason (well, maybe with the exception of swimming, but it occurs 2 or 3 times in the entire game, which is acceptable).

Everyone knows this was supposed to be Deus Ex 3, so obviously there are similarities, but for those wondering, they bear more resemblance to Invisible War than to the classic RPG/Action original. It’s a decent FPS, with augmentations that are given to you at various stages of the game, you can’t choose them and the skill tree isn’t even a pretence here anymore. The action takes place in Hong Kong and the enemies look similar to those in Invisible War; so you are getting a sort of development from the second game in terms of feel.

This is a solid, if overly easy FPS in the classic sense of Duke Nukem and Half-Life and has a bit of the look of Deus Ex: Invisible War. Fans of DX games will enjoy some surface-level thematic similarity but will be underwhelmed to the depths of their souls if they’re looking for anything more than skin deep. Those looking for storytelling or character will be devastated. The plot is awful and the main character is probably my least favorite video game character of any game I have completed.

I came to this came as a Deus Ex fan. The original Deus Ex was my favorite game when it came out and it is my favorite game now. Every entry in the series is special to me (yes, including Invisible War, which was still a Deus Ex game if just somewhat simplified in mechanics). This is not a Deus Ex game and makes no argument that it is, even with apparent Deus Ex influence and that it began its life as a Deus Ex entry. This review will largely be for fans of that series.

Warzone 2100

Warzone 2100

Old school RTS. Somewhat limited due to the old UI, archaic controls, and limited mission parameters (that were sometimes in place to keep the game within the performance capacity available at the time). BUT! despite all that. This is the game that kept me into RTS games during a helluva long dry spell LOL. Dune on Genesis caught me first. Then this and the Command and Conquer games. I’ve played so much Stellaris it isn’t even a game anymore. it’s an empire simulator. But i still love this game. a lot!

For a game more then 20 years old it is still awesome. I first played this on Play Station 1 and after a few years I found a pirated copy online and still play it. Because it is 20 years old there are some AI issues with pathing but nothing that cant be remidied by changing your click and forget playstyle.

My biggest selling point on this game is something that ALL RTS games should have… a “seemless campane” meaning the defences AND units you build are used for ALL future missions. There are a number of customization options and stratagies you can choose from even in single player matches vs the PC.

Chaser

Chaser

A really old first-person shooter with futuristic background, heavily based on the movie “Total Recall”. Somehow, up to the moment, Chaser is the best game its creators, Cauldron, made for all those years.

If you haven’t played it before, when it was all fresh and comparable to the actual FPS on the market (2003, before such hits as Far Cry, HL2, and FEAR) - well, the game isn’t aged well. If you’re not down with old-school gaming mechanics, you’ll most likely shouldn’t try to play Chaser now. The game has many obvious and troublesome downsides, it is a real pain in the back for any casual nowadays gamer.

“Basically Nintendo 64 & Total Recall”

Chaser is a FPS and the very first game ever built on the Cloak NT 3D engine. Developed by Cauldron http://www.cauldron.sk/ a Slovakian gaming company more notorious for their Cabela franchise. Chaser was released in 2003 which is kind of strange since N64 was released back in 1996 and this game felt somewhat more as a continuation from that cream of the crop.

The game depicts the near future when man has inhabited Mars. In 2036 a coalition of 36 BIG corporations establish the MARSCORP with the goal of terraforming the planet. However, in 2042 the UN makes Samuel Longwood the director of this organisation who then begins to separate Mars into becoming more an independent government with himself becoming its dictator. Eventually a rebel movement headed by Graham Castor is formed whose sole goal is to liberate Mars from this oppressive government. Their continuous rebel strike movement has been long standing and elusive from Longwood’s control and the UNIA Special Forces.

I first saw this game at PAX East 2019 and loved the few minutes I played of it. I’m not an over ambitious gamer so I didn’t opt for “old school” hard mode. The difficulty was perfect for me and I enjoyed taking the weekend to play it. This game is too new and too indie to have any guides but there is a a drone you can get to help you find all the hidden items if you get stuck. The music is great and the art aesthetic is awesome. They avoid having the numerous baddies feel repetitive by offering several different designs of the same style bad guy/gal. Can’t wait to see what else this group makes!

** Disclaimer: I was a Kickstarter backer. **

This was a really fun Zelda-like beat-em-up! The game has a lot to explore, a lot to fight, and a bunch of puzzles on the easy-to-moderate difficulty side. It looks great, really living up to its namesake, and it also sounds great with every area and boss getting their own tune! The story isn’t particularly in-depth or surprising, but every gang leader has their own little story, making them seem somewhat relatable. English obviously isn’t the developer’s first language, but I don’t feel it ever got in the way of the story or quests. I mostly just corrected the grammar in my mind and moved on.

World War Zero

World War Zero

It’s really cool to see this on Steam since back in the day the PC CD version was only ever sold in the UK. I played Iron Storm 20 years ago but never got a chance to play this game until now. Anyway, World War Zero is a 2004 Playstation 2 port of the 2002 PC game Iron Storm, but so many changes were made that it feels like almost an entirely different game, with only the basic level layout and story being the same.

It feels like a very typical “average” console FPS of the time period; overall feel is extremely similar to games like Warhammer 40k Fire Warrior, Red Faction 2, Judge Dredd: Dredd vs Death, Killzone 1, etc. Gameplay is run-and-gun with no aim-down-sights, there is a little bit of sidepath exploration for extra ammo but overall levels are straightforward and linear, enemy behavior is mostly just run into line-of-sight, then stand still and shoot at you.

A fun mindless shooter that literally is BF1 before BF because everyone is using modern warfare type weapons and equipment. Diesel punk future more or less, but you play as the bad guys who literally “float armies on the stock market” against Ugenberg who surpressed the Bolsheviks which inadvertently stops WW2 but instead culminates to a long 60 year war and they try to pull a “humanity good war is pointless” which makes sense for that time but comes off as hollow because it’s forcing WW1 to have an obvious good guy bad guy cliche at the same time. And when you know the history it’s a bit more depressing, fun but meh. Also, the last boss is a pain, since you don’t get directions to anywhere just objectives and a map to wander in (like all old school games like that), you may have trouble finding it but there’s a Buddha statue and an elevator on the 2nd floor that you don’t even know is there. The boss is just a pain, you have to exploit his slow walking and stupidity because his minigun chews through you and anything blocking it, so just walk him to the boxes on the left via the alleyway and chuck grenades and whatnot over till he dies.
