Word Rescue

Word Rescue

I have to question Word Rescue both as an educational tool and as entertainment. It is way too easy to get into an unwinnable scenario since the goo used to incapacitate monsters does not reset on death, becomeing an exercise in frustration as the player can collect a bucket of goo and either intentionally die to respawn with a full meter and an extra bucket to pick up, or, more often than not, use up all of the goo and die to respawn with nothing. It is especially frustrating in episodes two and three as they usually spawn the player surrounded by monsters and mostly consist of very narrow hallways where it is impossible to dodge them to get to a bucket powerup. The game also likes to drop monsters from the sky for some unfair, unavoidable deaths, further exacerbating the problem.

This game is much harder than I remember, and I played it on the highest difficulty. I picked this up in the Apogee pack, most of which I had as shareware when I was a child. I am of course much older than the demographic audience now, and I had a blast with this game when I was a kid. It’s still a very challenging platformer at higher difficulty because the game has quite a bit of depth for players who which to go for the perfect run, The RNG can be a bit unfair at times and the nature of the monsters not moving off screen seems unfair at first, but this can be used to your own advantage when you are out of ammunition. Matching images while spelling out words (much like spelling out NUKEM in Duke Nukem 1&2, it must be in order) still trips me up from time to time. So the game gives you a good amount to keep track of at a higher difficultly. The music is pleasant, and none of it is phoned in. My only complaint is that ‘Orange’, because of the EGA pallet, appears red. Definitly a buy for a young child, and a welcome addition if you are looking for something to trip you up mentally as you try to remember where NOT to drop into a mismatching image, which spoils your run, wastes you ammo, and potentially can kill you.

Zoombinis

Zoombinis

Like many here, I purchased this because the original was a favorite from my childhood, and it’s with a heavy heart that I have to condemn this game with a negative review.

Gameplay is identical to the original. The puzzles have the same rules and mechanics, the only difference is graphical. Unfortunately, the graphic enhancements are the only positive thing this version does. The biggest issue is that the game cannot be completed due to one particular puzzle: Mirror Machine. The puzzle in this version of the game on the two hardest difficulties is mired with a myriad of glitches that force you to either take a wrong answer and lose a Zoombini due to not giving you the proper filters or abandon that attempt entirely due to the filters locking up and becoming unmovable. These glitches happen at random too, so it boils down to restarting the puzzle (and clearing the Lion’s Lair puzzle before it on Journey mode) repeatedly until the game decides to behave.

As someone who played the original Zoombinis 30 years ago I am happy to have this reboot. The logic puzzles are mostly challenging and fun, but there are a few flaws to beware. Some came with the original game, such as the Crystal Caves, which can get tedious when you’ve got to go through the same exercise 16 times, one for each Zoombini.

The bigger problem is one the developers could have fixed but failed to. The original game came with a manual, as did most games of that era. The manual explained the levels of difficulty as you advance through the game. The most simple example is the Allergic Cliffs. Level 1 is simple enough. One cliff is allergic to one characteristic. Figure out which one through trial and error, and send anyone with that trait in over the other bridge. But what is different in Level 2? It’s unclear. By level 4 you’ll feel like you’re randomly guessing because there is no information on how the rules have changed. To make it worse, there is a “?” symbol on each screen, which would have been the perfect place to add the original manual text. However the developers left the original text in there, which is nothing more than words of encouragement and of no help whatsoever.

Super 3-D Noah’s Ark

Super 3-D Noah’s Ark

This game is probably the best game from the Wolf3d engine which you never heard of in the 90s. When this first hit steam and I came aware of it, I looked and instantly recognised the engine. I knew it was going straight to my wishlist and soon got it.

I didn’t play it at first for a few reasons. The screenshots show a hell of a lot of brown to rival Quake. Partly the religious side of things and you need to be in the right mood for an old game in the days when you have lots of other things you can play.

This is actually a really fun game. I’m having more fun with it than I originally thought I would be.

Super 3-D Noah’s Ark is a labyrinth FPS from the DOS era which used and upgraded Wolfenstein 3D’s engine. It added a few cool things like MIDI support and texture-mapped floors and ceilings. This version on Steam has been repolished and ported over to modern operating systems, so now there’s no need to use DOSBoX to emulate it!

The quality of this port is really good. The sound quality has been bumped up significantly, it can play in 1080p with true 16:9 aspect ratio (no stretching), the mouselook feels natural and it supports mods. This release also has achievements and trading cards, which is more than what most re-releases or remakes get.

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge

Free for everyone at the time of review.

Hardware: Win 10x64, 3570k mildly OC, GTX 1070, 16 GB, SSD.

Super laggy on my system; took me a full 30 minutes to complete a game advertised as 5-10 minutes. I see the system specs state “Windows 7”; I’m guessing this is either a Win 10 issue (some games lag badly in 8 / 10 that run fine in 7) or possibly the 10xx series video card.

I recommend taking a very brief glance at the videos before playing to see how fast the game is supposed to move. If the game is going to lag for you, it will start at the opening credits, which take so long to change screens (tapping an arrow key helps) that it feels like the game is locked up. Don’t press ESC; that instantly closes the game.

‘The hardest tumble a man can make is to fall over his own bluff’' - Ambrose Bierce

James Cox has adapted, as part of his ‘100 games in 5 years’ project, the timeless classic short story titled An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge written by Ambrose Bierce in 1890. It has seen many variations since its inception ranging from short story to full novel inspirations, radio screenplays including a Twilight Zone broadcast, TV drama/movies and even music videos including Bon Jovi’s song Dyin' ain’t much of a livin'.

Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword

Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword

This is my favorite game since it came out, and my favorite version of Civ (I know Civ 1 through 5)

I won’t go into what Civ is specifically about. You should know.

Nor will I compare to other Civ games. It has been done.

This versions' depth is impressive, and the playability is… at least a few lifetimes.

Graphics are normal, but totally irrelevant!

The 4X strategy design and many (but not too many) balanced options make it something that will always be enjoyable.

Spock will still read your Scientific discoveries out loud! :P

I’ll start by saying that this is not a game for casuals, if you want to have a game that is incredibly compelling and complex and rewarding to learn, this is your game. While Civ 3 remains a complete mystery to me, I can say I have played all the others, and this one is by far the best I’ve played. You might say “what about Civ 5?”, but I highly prefer it to Civ 5 for several reasons (unit stacking Figure out how to use collateral damage people, tech/espionage/culture slider, much more micromanagable empire, better system for unit and city maintenance, far superior espionage system, more interesting promotion dynamics with military units, unrestricted leaders, non gimmicky leader traits, non gimmicky religions, far superior map options, way less annoying barbarians, way less buggy multiplayer, etc etc etc…)

Subway Simulator

First of all, I paid for this game. It’s fun, and I WILL continue to play. However, the paid version has annoying glitches. For my first 2 stops, passengers board and alight as they do in the free version. On the third stop, they board and alight only after you press i for the “please stand clear” announcement will platform passengers board. But then, the box showing passengers stops showing passengers. Subsequent stops show people boarding/alighting only after press i, and no on-screen credit for, or information on them. IT SEEMS, however, that if you finish the route then choose Depot, then you will see credit for the passengers that boarded at the stations in question. There are more bugs to discover. I paid, so I just want it to work properly. However, it’s fun, and I play.

The game only acts in subway view. Would like to get help from Steam/ Valve, or someone. there is no manual

to help. I do not like the Discussions. Take a long time to find your problem. Take your money and do not offer any solutions, except to refer you to a third party. Well I bought this game on their advertisement and now I cannot get my money back because they said I have played it for 4 hrs. That 4 hours was spent mostly trying to get the game working. I would not recommend this site to anyone!!

Nice update. Much better. It seems like it would be better to abstract the properties and get people into the game faster… You could have 3 settings… Easy, Medium, Hard, and then one or two custom setups.

At this point I would recommend the game, but if I change my recommendation it will “clear other users recommendations”… I don’t really know what that means… so I’ll leave the official recommendation the same.

Archaica: The Path of Light

Archaica: The Path of Light

I rarely review games. Only if a game really excels in what it sets out to do I feel I have to give my 2 cents. Archaica is without a doubt such a game because it does everything it wants to achieve in a mesmerising way.

Archaica is a light redirection puzzle game. It contains 87 separate puzzles that split into 6 chapters with a total of

  • 68 campaign puzzles, and

  • 19 side quest puzzles.

The player is gradually made familiar with the basic puzzle mechanics in the first chapter and more intricate mechanics are introduced in the following chapters. Generally speaking you have to direct light beams of different colors through crystals of the same color by using mirrors, splitters, filters, etc. As to the difficulty curve, I’d say that starting from chapter 3 puzzles are getting pretty hard to solve even though some may be less difficult.

Real player with 23.0 hrs in game

TL:DR - 8/10 - Surprisingly enjoyable little indie puzzle game with well-constructed levels and some genuine headscratchers.

And now the slightly longer review…

GAMEPLAY

This game starts off a bit easy, but gets much more challenging as it goes on. Like most great puzzle games, the puzzles look simple enough, but some of them turn out to be real headscratchers. The levels are well-constructed and eliminate as many alternate solutions as possible, leaving you with only one correct way of solving them. Each level generally consists of two elements: the puzzle itself, and a light scavenger hunt. The puzzles themselves are the most satisfying element of gameplay. The scavenger hunt elements, for the most part, are just a quick thing to do to get achievements, unlock lore, and unlock hints, if you are so inclined to use hints. (I’m not. I’ll solve it myself, dammit!) There were only a handful of really well hidden elements, and I found myself more annoyed by the less obvious scavenger hunts because they were keeping me from doing what I really wanted to do, the puzzles!
