Turok 2: Seeds of Evil

Turok 2: Seeds of Evil

When i think back to my childhood, My mind instantly goes back to what i consider to be my nostalgia days.

Games like DOOM, Timesplitters Duke Nukem, basically raised me as a young lad.

But if theres a game that i have a raging hard on for other than Doom, its Turok 2 Seeds Of Evil a game that for the longest time was nearly impossible for me to get my hands on.

After legally obtaining it and totally not torrenting it, the original pc port was finally mine and it was time to experience one of the games i grew up with as an adult.

When I played Turok: Dinosaur Hunter a few years ago I was impressed with Night Dive Studios’ ability to remaster classics from the past. The remastered game inspired me to buy Turok 2: Seeds of Evil. I didn’t play either game when they were released in the 1990s, so I wanted to experience both games. When I saw screenshots and videos of Turok 2 from 1998 I thought that the graphics were too blocky, and the lighting was murky. I can say that the remastered Turok 2 significantly improves on the graphics and the gameplay is quite intense.

Turok

I’ve been a VERY LONG and dedicated fan to the Turok franchise since I was a child. Turok and Turok 2 were my first FPS games I have ever played, and I played them repeatedly as a child and into adulthood.

I have every N64 game, PC port, Gameboy game, Turok Evolution, and even the incredibly average Turok 2008 on PS3 and PC. I even dabbled in the comics, toys, and collectables.

You’re, most likely, coming here from the N64 version of Turok, and that’s fine. To be honest, there were few differences, even visually, from the original PC port and the N64 port of Turok: The Dinosaur Hunter. On modern systems, there were a few glitches with the PC port, such as the music randomly cutting off entirely, and some visual hiccups.

Warning, this game holds a lot of Nostalgia for me, as this was my second most played game on my N64 back in the day. (Turok 2 being my most played.) *I still own my copies and they still work.

Turok Dinosaur Hunter was, in my mind, one of the BEST FPS games on the N64. Some would argue that 007 Goldeneye and Perfect Dark were better, but Turok was basically the QUAKE/DOOM of the N64. Fast paced and total devastation to your enemies, which is why I hale this better than 007 and Perfect Dark. The quickness and speed to it and the feel of the weapons made it more fun to me than the others.

Lost Eden

Lost Eden

A game I loved so much from my childhood years has returned. Lost Eden was one of those classic games I could play for hours and never get bored. You play as Adam, the son of a king whose empire is threatened by an evil lord named Morkuus Rex the leader of the Tyrann. So you set out on a quest with various friends some are dinosaurs, some are humans and some are weird and fantastic creatures. Now let’s talk about the game. Even though the graphics may seem out-dated but to me this game still holds up well and despite the graphics from the 1990’s the animation is impressive for it’s time. And there are puzzles to solve during the game which requires a bit of brain power but none are too impossible to solve. Video-gamers should try out this 1990’s gem. And another thing I loved about the game was the fantastic soundtrack, It gives the game a sense of adventure and mystery. Playing this game was a nostalgic blast and it kinda reminded me of Dinotopia in a way. I know people are going to disagree, but Lost Eden would make a great Big-Budget movie from hollywood if done right. So do yourself a favour, give this game a go it’s a really relaxing and fun game.

When I was young, my brother and I received a game from our godmother that we had no idea what it was about. All we saw on the case were the words “Lost Eden” and a pterodactyl flying over a jungle. We booted the game up and we started playing. AND THEN THE MUSIC KICKED IN. My brother and I were freaked out and imeadiately turned off the game. We had nightmares for weeks.

Flashforward a decade later, we start replaying the game with our cousin and we braved through it.

Flashforward another decade and it’s finally on Steam and still one of my favorite games from childhood!

Tomb Raider: Anniversary

Tomb Raider: Anniversary

***** QUICK SPOILER-FREE REVIEW *****

An amazing game! I’ve played the others by Crystal Dynamics and I’d place this with the gritty reboot as the best.

THE GOOD: Damn near everything!

The puzzles are actually puzzling, the platforming challenging, the dialogue and acting are actually good and the story gives Lara some surprising depth! The music hits both the atmospheric and action themes perfectly, and the game is more than its money’s worth in terms of length (expect 20 - 40 hours). Oh and it still looks great in 2015!

Tomb Raider: Anniversary is a superb game in almost every way. As a video gamer new to the franchise, I can now fully understand the reasons behind the tremendous popularity of the Tomb Raider series and the fervor of its fan base. The extent of my previous experience with the internationally celebrated Lara Croft amounted to about 20 minutes of game play on a roommate’s Playstation back in the year 2000. Thus, I had not been truly prepared for how fantastic a journey I would embark upon in Tomb Raider: Anniversary for PC on sale from Steam.

Tomb Raider I

“Fortune and glory, kid. Fortune and glory.”

~Indiana Jones

It’s hard to overrate the first Tomb Raider. Kids nowadays, who take video games for granted, most likely won’t understand how it felt when the entire industry used to change dramatically with certain games being made. And Tomb Raider? It was one of those world-changing titles. But to explain what exactly happened back in 1996, we’ll need to go even further in the past. In the year 1989, when 25 years old man Jordan Mechner released a game for Apple II computers. A game that blew everybody’s mind and quickly became one of the most legendary names in video games history. I’m talking, of course, about Prince of Persia.

Opening an old, dusty box in the attic, coughing like hell and getting your eyes irritated due to the suffocating, aged dust contained within. It has been years, if not decades, when you laid your eyes upon that once silver coloured box and the many games received as gifts, probably, amongst the many iconic titles, one always stood up to you, maybe it was the hype, maybe it was how the story sparked interest or maybe, just maybe it’s the pointy… ‘‘triangles’’. Nonetheless, you pick up everything, run down the stairs, plug everything correctly and fire the beast already. Damn… 24 years has passed and it still smells like childhood.

Dino Eggs: Rebirth

Dino Eggs: Rebirth

A great homage to the original 1983 game, which is among my favorite Commodore games. Rebirth is just as addictive as its predecessor, and I love how the graphics, mechanics and sound effects all have elements that play off the original. My ONLY criticism is the atrocious kerning on the large scrolling cutscene text (I’m a graphic designer) - but otherwise I love it!

Having played the original since I was 7, I was quite intrigued by this reboot. I was not disappointed. It deftly straddles the line between nostalgic value and modern playability.

I have not yet played multiplayer with anyone as yet…hint hint, friends! 😸

Dinocide

Dinocide

Dinocide is an retro platformer set in an alternate prehistoric timeline. I haven’t played a platformer for a while so I must say, it felt good to play this.

The story of the game is as follows, your lovely companion, which I assume to be your wife/partner, gets captured by a mysterious creature and you’re off to save her. That is it. This is one of the few complaints I have about Dinocide, the superficial story or lack of any actual development and dialogue. Despite this, the game manages to redeem it itself.

After yesterday’s review of a somewhat disappointing platform game, Marcus Level, I didn’t want to set my hopes too high for Dinocide. However, this was very difficult. It’s a game that again appears to have everything that I look for in this type of game being inspired by the NES old-school single player platformers. It’s also not the developer, AtomicTorch Studio, first game on Steam. Generally developers learn a trick or two from their debut game and I hoped that this was the case here. Their first title, VoidExpanse, released in April of last year, was met with a rather poor to mixed reaction by the reviews on Metacritic where the game averages a 59 critic score which is somewhat bogged down by the 40 that GameSpot‘s Kevin VanOrd gave the game. However, Steam players genuinely appeared to like the game (72-28 positive-negative review score as of time of writing). With that said Dinocide appeared to have potential from the outside looking in.

WAR PARTY

WAR PARTY

I’m always looking for new RTS games since they are a rare thing these days. However, Im often very dissapointed by what I find.

Well, that is NOT the case with war party !!!

This game is only on early access but it’s impressive how good it is ! it’s easy to understand as it possesses a lot of classical RTS mechanics but also some new stuff that make the game deep, fun and challenging.

The + :

  • cool and unusual universe (caveman x dinos x vaudou) : You can produce some T-rex ans some mounted velociraptor or go with some witch doctor and zombies

As a long time supporter going back all the way back to the alpha, here are my thoughts about the game as of launch.

The strengths:

  • 3 asymmetric, visually distinct factions.

  • Will have a campaign in the full release.

  • Dedicated servers are near-flawless. Forget about desyncs, laggy gameplay due to peer to peer etc.

  • League-rank system just like in Starcraft 2.

  • Excellent matchmaking that expands search, starting at your ELO. This makes for close games once you stabilize your ELO.
