Fenimore Fillmore: The Westerner

Fenimore Fillmore: The Westerner

A very solid graphic adventure, the strongest part is represented by the puzzles that are really good (and this, has always been the factor N1 in any adventure).

The artworks are of average quality but are lovely painted with extreme cure, the same for the cinematics that are really funny and enjoyable to watch.

One of the things i mostly missed was the option to accelerate the slow walking and the fast exit from a scene, that would have speeded a lot the things making a little less stressing the gameplay, i also experienced few crashes in some points that forced me to reload a previous checkpoint.

a cute point & click, old school style. thoroughly enjoyed it. no probs running on my pc except for one or two freezes, but luckily regular auto saves negated any disasters. without giving any spoilers, there was also a very nifty bit after the main ending, at the beginning of credits. fun!!

Fenimore Fillmore: 3 Skulls of the Toltecs

After i’ve finished the second of Fenimore adventures, i wanted to take back the very older first one, that i abandoned many time ago in its first release, now in this new remastered version it gains new shining light and value revealing to be a really solid game.

Now that i finally was able to complete it i have to say i am amazed and speechless from how good the puzzles were, i never expected this but this first one is even better than the second, altough i was stuck for few days in some nasty puzzles, after solving them i can say that altough the average level here is set on Hard, nothing is impossible or too much illogic, all has its own sense and works like a charm.

This was one of first adventures I played at the time of release in 1996 and I have good memories of it. There were some serious problems with distribution back then and today the English only copies are very rare collector items and extremely expensive (I saw copies offered for thousands dollars). So it’s good that it is available again for affordable price as a digital copy.

The remastered version was not released in perfect state with some bugs and missing features but developers do care, already improved lots of things and listen to the players suggestions.

Garfield Kart - Furious Racing

Garfield Kart - Furious Racing

Thirty seven hours, thirty seven hours is all it takes to see god. Have you ever seen something so magical, so wonderful, that your mind cant help but look back on what could have been. In my thirty seven hours of game-play in “Garfield Kart - Furious Racing” my soul felt as though it left my body. Soon all I could see was Garfield, my toilet, Garfield, my table, Garfield, even my entire house was transforming into Garfield. It was at that moment I realized, it was him, right behind me, staring into my eyes menacingly. I tried to run away but my world began to crumble, the floors collapsed as I fell fifty feet into what seemed to be a massive cooked lasagna, the landing was rough but I seemed to come to my senses quickly. It was then I turned to my left to see Garfield’s massive dong swinging from side to side, his eyes locking onto me as he slammed it down onto the lasagna, I tried to run as quickly as possible but his dong began to suck me in, I screamed as I tried to escape, but no one could hear me. Soon I was being slurped down by his massive sausage, my screams slowly becoming muffled as everything turned black, it was over. Although I am still currently engulfed in Garfield’s massive nuts I cant deny loving every second of it, if your a fellow Garfield lover and love big nuts covered in lasagna please by all means purchase thirty seven copies for you all of your friends, 10/10 would play again, oh also nerf Odie that dude OP as hell.

“I do not assume any phrase can give an explanation for a person’s existence,” says one of the searchers thru the warehouse of treasures left in the back of with the aid of using Jonathan Arbuckle. Then we get the well-known collection of pictures main to the closeup of the phrase “Garfield” on a kart that has been tossed right into a furnace, its paint curling withinside the flames. We keep in mind that this become Arbuckle’s adolescence kart, taken from him as he become torn from his own circle of relatives and despatched east to boarding school.

Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders

Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders

I’ve been playing various Lucasarts graphic adventure games for the past week, and this is probably the worst so far. There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason as to where you are supposed to go, and it loves wasting your time by padding the game with horribly repetitive mazes everywhere you go. The characters are almost non-existent. Barely any lines are spoken between characters aside from Zak uttering a newspaper headline every once in a while. There are also unknowable fail states, which are unacceptable in a game filled with nonsensical puzzles and pixel hunting.

Real player with 13.6 hrs in game

Although “Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders” is a not one of the famous LucasArts' game, it’s one of their oldest point and click adventures that certainly pushed the genre forward with some creative ideas. Gameplay mechanics like controlling multiple characters or traveling freely everywhere were unique for back then and made the game less linear. That doesn’t mean that the puzzles are perfect. Many puzzles have weird logic or they don’t give you enough clues to proceed to the the next one. A lot of times you’ll try things by luck. Dead ends, repetitive deaths, pixel hunting and obsolete controls can be frustrating too. Nevertheless it is a game that packs lovely pixelated graphics, a crazy story, adorable characters, good sense of humor and it is entertaining enough to give it a try.

D: The Game

D: The Game

As a fan of the late Kenji Eno (R.I.P) and the now defunct WARP Studios games, I was really happy to see that D (WARP’s first game to be released outside of Japan) is now easily accessible on Steam.

D was originally made for the short lived 3DO in 1995 and was ported to the Sega Staurn, PS1, and MS DOS (which is this version). The gameplay is akin to 1993’s Myst, with the entire game being an fmv. Yet, unlike Myst, everything is fully animated. So if you want to get somewhere, you are going to have to walk there using a pre-set path. It’s kinda slow, but it really helps build the atmosphere.

I own this game on Playstation, 3DO, Saturn and now on Steam, and I don’t regret paying for it again, even though it hasn’t aged well, and even though this is a fairly mediocre DOSBox port.

D is an on-rails horror-suspense game from the 90s. You play as Laura Harris, daughter of Dr. Richter Harris, a famous physician who, for some reason, has suddenly decided to murder everyone in his hospital and disappear inside the building. You have two hours (in real time) to figure out why, with no saving, interactive movie-style.

Have a N.I.C.E day!

Have a N.I.C.E day!

Good, but a flawed version

This likely is the only legal way to get a copy of this game that plays nice with modern systems. It’s worth noting however that it misses the music and doesn’t upscale very well. I experienced some flickering and misplaced “hitboxes” in the wacky menus.

If you can live with that and just want to revisit this classic arcade racer then go ahead, it’s still good fun for an afternoon of nostalgia.

P.S.: Played through Wine on Linux, so displayed playtime isn’t accurate.

Impossible Creatures Steam Edition

Impossible Creatures Steam Edition

First of all, I’m biased– I’m one of those strange and twisted folk who kept playing this game after its original release fell into obscurity, and for years now the Impossible Creatures community has been fluctuating with an average of a dozen or so people at any given time, worldwide. But then, one day, Nordic Games approached us few survivors and told us of their plan to re-release the game on Steam; we jumped onboard as beta testers, and the day has finally come for release!

So yes– basically, I’m not the most impartial of sources. But it’s important for me to point out that Nordic has in no way asked or cajoled me to provide this review, nor have they had any input into its content. I’m just a fan of the game. In fact, I know the game inside and out, and that’s why you should listen when I say: holy shit, Impossible Creatures is amazing.

Wow, this game. Where to start? Like many others here, I’m a bit biased, as I’ve owned this game pretty much since it was released and it was a big part of my childhood gaming experience. I’ve been playing this game near-constantly since I got it all those years ago. The ~540 hours on the Steam Edition don’t even touch the thousands of hours I’ve put into this game over the years.

IC is truly incredible and there’s just something about it that keeps bringing people back to it. Maybe it’s the super-simplistic RTS gameplay that’s easily accesible even to genre noobs. Maybe it’s the seemingly endless number of hilarious creature combinations possible in the army builder, even without mods. There has to be something, because I havent got bored with it, even after 13 years.

Wow. This brings me back. Instant-buy.

For 3 bucks I could relive a major part of my childhood without fussing with getting my really old copy to run, just launch and go - with controller support (ish)

It’s great. So many great memories and Lance is just too funny. Even today it still plays well.

So for the positives the game does have rebindable keys, and works well with a 360 controller. And the game is at least playable but you can really tell this is the first in the series as it feels like a collection of half finished ideas.

Really it’s more of an on the rail shooter than a true racer, as you only ever 1v1. Add in some bad power up balance as well as limited tracks and cars to unlock.

So although it’s not totally awful and it is at least playable, I would only recommend you pick this up as part of the megarace pack and not on its own as the limited content will quickly wear thin.
