Tomb Raider IV: The Last Revelation

Tomb Raider IV: The Last Revelation

20 years ago, Core Design presented us with Tomb Raider for the PC, Playstation and SEGA Saturn, featuring Lara Croft who become a very iconic character in the gaming community. In the following two years, Tomb Raider II: Starring Lara Croft and Tomb Raider III: Adventures of Lara Croft for the PC and Playstation. The PC also had expansions for these three games, which were released the same time each game was released. Tomb Raider: Unfinished Business, Tomb Raider II: The Golden Mask and Tomb Raider III: The Lost Artifact. Which unfortunately aren’t on Steam. sad face :‘c

Tomb Raider IV had the best story comparin to the previous I, II, III ones. It had improvements, more items added to the puzzles such as corner climbing, doors, boxes, smaller size moving objects, trapdoors, scope aiming and so on and on. It does sound good but in a way it ruined the gameplay for me a little. I had to run over and over and over again the same places (maps were bigger than in previous games), which left me so lost on what am I supposed to do. I had to use the walkthrough so many times and after finding out that I did try doing that and it did not work out for me (little wrong aiming or standing did not trigger it) I just lost the mood to play it. Sometimes where were some small unnoticiable target you had to aim and shoot, that was pretty much blendining in with the surroundings or had no glue where I have to go do get more progress, which stole so much time and ruined the gameplay. So I played the game on and off for a month while other ones I played through within few days.

Oh boy, where to start?

Tomb Raider III: Adventures of Lara Croft is not a bad game. It’s not necessarily a good game, either. While the developers added a lot to the default Tomb Raider experience (including new volumetric lighting and 3D particle effects) and enhanced the otherwise unchanged and familiar gameplay formula of jumping, climbing, puzzling, shooting and dying by handing Lara a new set of skills including crawling through tight spaces, a much needed sprinting feature and monkey-swinging your way across certain areas, the game ended up being needlessly convoluted and confusing.

I think this is the first TR I ever played, and only recently finished.

A huge improvement over the previous two titles, TR3 feels like it has more freedom.

Immediately after finishing the introduction levelset of India, you’re offered a choice of your next adventure. Yes, there is a “right” order in which to do these locations, but in the end, it’s all a matter of preference.

I always do Nevada first to ensure that I don’t lose valuable weapons later on, due to that section having one of those iconic “you got no weapons for half the level, good luck” levels that every Tomb Raider seems to have.

Alright, so first let’s talk about this Steam version.

It launched a few days ago, and it was a big disappointement. I was really hyped when I found the game was going to be on Steam because I thought everything would be fixed. Well, It wasn’t the case.

The DirectX crash was still there, the overall instability of the game too, no music, and most importantly, the playtime was broken so you couldn’t write a review. (No Steam Multiplayer support but while it’s a bit of a let down it wasn’t as important as having a functional product.)

Tomb Raider II

Tomb Raider II

My favourite classic Tomb Raider!

Why?

  • Amazing and awesome levels,

  • VARIOUS levels,

  • amazing story,

  • first animated hair and first mobile source of light (flares),

  • many cool ideas packed into those levels,

  • very nice FMVs (movie clips with hi-poly models),

  • many cut-scenes,

  • amazing music, some those memorable notes which defined TR music,

  • a big training map (house & garden) available anytime,

  • an old servant thanks to who Lara was never thirsty (unless frozen : ),

After playing Tomb Raider 1 2 and 3 (original pc tomb raiders that is) I must rank them in the same order. TR 1 begins slow but ends big. TR 2 is good throughout. TR 3 is sparse, becomes difficult and unmanageable. My ranking of the best 5 episodes (from number one to number 5):

TR 1 egypt -sanctuary of the scion. This has the amazing underground sphinx. It keeps you in this amazing atmosphere of adventure, a constant involvement and thrill.

TR 1- atlantis - the great pyramid - an entire pyramid hidden underground. the final escape after the boss fight is itself an amazing episode. The demons who are genetically engineered monsters are masterfully rendered. Great satisfaction in completing the level and the game.

Indiana Jones® and the Fate of Atlantis™

Indiana Jones® and the Fate of Atlantis™

If you like the Indiana Jones series and wish to see everything that are related to his numerous adventures Worldwide, this is one of the stones that you have to tread on. I have played and finished the 2003 Lucas Arts game Emperor’s Tomb before and did not hesitate to buy this 1992 game in year 2016, once i heard that it has completely unique set of events which were not replicated in any Indy film/game before or after. I wanted to finish the game by not reading any of hints or tips from a walkthrough guide -and i succeeded-, because adventuring through the untold dullness of life is THE INHERENT core of Indy adventures. This game gives that unique feeling of being an Indiana Jones even with 1992 graphics and sounds. Because, the feeling of playing Dr. Jones does not rely on eye-candy graphics, but lies with finding whatever way to wrestle through life even if it goes somewhere that was not intended initially.

“Fortune and glory, kid. Fortune and glory.”

It’s hard to overrate the first Tomb Raider. Kids nowadays, who take video games for granted, most likely won’t understand how it felt when the entire industry used to change dramatically with certain games being made. And Tomb Raider? It was one of those world-changing titles. But to explain what exactly happened back in 1996, we’ll need to go even further in the past. In the year 1989, when 25 years old man Jordan Mechner released a game for Apple II computers. A game that blew everybody’s mind and quickly became one of the most legendary names in video games history. I’m talking, of course, about Prince of Persia.

Opening an old, dusty box in the attic, coughing like hell and getting your eyes irritated due to the suffocating, aged dust contained within. It has been years, if not decades, when you laid your eyes upon that once silver coloured box and the many games received as gifts, probably, amongst the many iconic titles, one always stood up to you, maybe it was the hype, maybe it was how the story sparked interest or maybe, just maybe it’s the pointy… ‘‘triangles’’. Nonetheless, you pick up everything, run down the stairs, plug everything correctly and fire the beast already. Damn… 24 years has passed and it still smells like childhood.

Tomb Raider V: Chronicles

Tomb Raider V: Chronicles

One year later, in 2000, Core Design released Tomb Raider: Chronicles, the 5th installment in the series. Now this was probably an unexpected entry in the series, after the events in The Last Revelation. But in comparison to past games…it’s a good entry in the series, but not really an improvement. I’m not saying the game is bad, though.

But let’s start with the story. Now for those of you who don’t know the story, SPOILER ALERT!

! After the events in The Last Revelation, Lara is presumed dead, crushed under the ruins of the temple inside The Great Pyramid, in Egypt. Those closest to her back in England get together to pay tribute to Lara. Her family, her butler and some of her friends, who get together at Croft Manor to talk about stories of some of her previous adventures which hadn’t been covered in previous games, all narrated by Lara’s butler, Winston and her friends, Charles Kane and Father Patrick. Now these stories take Lara through four different locations. Rome, in search of the Philosopher’s Stone. Russia, in search of the Spear of Destiny. Ireland as Young Lara, to help dealing with demons haunting an isle’s inhabitants and to New York City to infiltrate a corporation to steal a certain artifact which for some, is most likely familiar. While her friends back in England get together to pay tribute to Lara, Werner Von Croy is still in Egypt, trying to get down the pyramid in hopes of finding Lara or what’s left of her.

Tomb Raider Chronicles received mixed reviews and was criticized for the fact that “it started becoming more of the same” and I agree; both this and TR4 utilize the same game engine and TR2 and 3 utilized a similar engine, this is very easy to notice in game. Although I agree with this, I will be reviewing Chronicles as a game in its own respective right and disregard its predecessors.

The game on the whole acts as a memorial tribute to Lara Croft who is presumed dead (after the events of TR4). The game is comprised of 13 levels which are split into 4 “acts”. Each act tells a story of one of Lara’s many past adventures, reminisced by her butler and past friends. Her adventures vary from her quest in search of the Philosopher’s stone in Rome to infilrating a high-security tower block in New York to steal the Iris. There is a fair amount of variety in the game that stops it from getting bland and boring.

Roko-Loko into Ratozinger’s Castle

Roko-Loko into Ratozinger’s Castle

I am very happy to be able to play this game as it’s been a part of my teenage years.

Roko-Loko into Ratozinger’s Castle is a platform game that mirrors the origins of platform games, with the great advantage of being a game aimed to please an older sort of audience: that of lovers of rock music.

The art of cartoonist Marcio Baraldi is very popular amongst Brazilian headbangers and he is regarded as one of the greatest underground artists in the country.

Roko-Loko into Ratozinger’s Castle is a very difficult game to master, especially from the second stage onwards. The stages are labyrinths in which we end up lost every now and then.

Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy

Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy

I’ve been eagerly awaiting Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy since it was announced for re-release on the PC by THQ Nordic, it looks and feels just like I remember, however, on a 1440p monitor, the GUI elements are extremely small. It’s good that they don’t stretch unnaturally, but the subtitles and button display are quite small and currently have no options to increase them. Developer Swyter has confirmed on the Community Hub that this will be fixed. I’ve only experienced one minor freeze so far, but I think this happened when my Xbox Controller suddenly became disconnected from the computer.

Well this has been a long time coming. This game brings back so many childhood memories. My biggest question is WHERE IS THE 2ND GAME!!! A second game needs to be made. Alright enough ranting for part 2 let’s get into the review.

Let’s start with the pros:

  • Beautiful graphics

  • Very solid story line

  • Simple and easy controls

  • Not too difficult (Gameplay wise)

  • Excellent music

  • Very fun overall

Now for the cons

  • Very short (Completed it in almost less then 12 hours)

  • Very little to no voice acting

Tomb Raider VI: The Angel of Darkness

Tomb Raider VI: The Angel of Darkness

A flawed, but good game.

A lot of reviews of Tomb Raider The Angel of Darkness critziese verious aspects of the game, such as the awakward controls, gameplay bugs and the darker nature of lara. None of these reviews give a background to why it has all of these flaws. This isnt really going to be a review of the game. I would recomend reading other reviews to find out about the acual game. This is just for players to read and to take into mind why the game has all these flaws.

Here’s the backstory to why the game was rushed (which I have adatpted from Wikipeda - I won’t tell if you don’t ;) )

Real player with 25.8 hrs in game

Tomb Raider (VI): The Angel of Darkness is the worst thing ever made by a human. I honestly think it’s the most horrible game I’ve ever played. The Boaz boss fight was like playing Dark Souls with bad controls and slow movement and there are so many graphical glitches that the game feels like it’s being held together by paper mache.

The movement is sluggish and unreliable to the point of bafflement that it could even reach this level of terribleness. Simple acts such as picking up items, opening doors and jumping small ledges become challenging tasks. It’s truly a unique situation when simply moving your character around is a challenging mini-game within the game itself.
