Doom 3: BFG Edition

Doom 3: BFG Edition

Since Doom 3: BFG Edition is in fact a collection of games, it makes sense to evaluate the games individually.

Two old-school DOS Doom games - The Ultimate Doom and Doom II: Hell on Earth - have been ported to run natively within Windows. These games are absolute classics, but unfortunately, the copies included in this package have two major problems: frame rate and censorship.

When launched directly through Doom 3: BFG Edition, Doom 1 and 2 have their frame rates capped. This means that these very old games can only have animation as smooth as is possible when they are played in DOS - an archaic operating system that, even for its time, had trouble managing and accessing memory that was physically available to the computer.

Doom 3 is an odd game since despite having a greater focus on horror, it’s still an action game at the end of the day. There’s more story compared to the original games, however it is nothing too special and it can be very predictable at times. Since Doom 3 is still an action game, your weapons are pretty strong and you can carry a ton of ammo with you. I am aware the BFG Edition added more but considering the lockers give you a ton of ammo anyways in the original Doom 3, I am confused as to why they even added more ammo to begin with. Doom 3 still has good atmosphere and a great interpretation of Hell that I think even Doom 2016 and Eternal do not capture. It really shows how terrifying Hell is for your normal person, or in this game’s case, a marine who is usually indifferent to a lot of things.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary

***** QUICK SPOILER-FREE REVIEW *****

An amazing game! I’ve played the others by Crystal Dynamics and I’d place this with the gritty reboot as the best.

THE GOOD: Damn near everything!

The puzzles are actually puzzling, the platforming challenging, the dialogue and acting are actually good and the story gives Lara some surprising depth! The music hits both the atmospheric and action themes perfectly, and the game is more than its money’s worth in terms of length (expect 20 - 40 hours). Oh and it still looks great in 2015!

Tomb Raider: Anniversary is a superb game in almost every way. As a video gamer new to the franchise, I can now fully understand the reasons behind the tremendous popularity of the Tomb Raider series and the fervor of its fan base. The extent of my previous experience with the internationally celebrated Lara Croft amounted to about 20 minutes of game play on a roommate’s Playstation back in the year 2000. Thus, I had not been truly prepared for how fantastic a journey I would embark upon in Tomb Raider: Anniversary for PC on sale from Steam.

Worms Ultimate Mayhem

Worms Ultimate Mayhem

After hundreds of hours and over 10 years, I figured it’s about time I sit down and write a review for this masterpiece in gaming history. This gem holds a very special place in my heart, and it will forever be one of my all-time favorite games. To me, this is Team17’s magnum opus. It doesn’t get any better than this. It is the reason I first began to engage with the Steam community years ago when I created the Worms Ultimate Mayhem Militia with my brother, and it’s the reason I have hundreds of friends on Steam today. To put it quite simply, Worms Ultimate Mayhem isn’t just a game, it’s one of my passions. I know the new Rumble has beautiful graphics and a much larger playerbase, and the 2D games like Armageddon are beloved and often regarded as best, but in my humble opinion this is the greatest Worms game there is.

Worms 3D + Worms 4 Mayhem together, with remastered graphics? Awesome!

All is good, good except the lack of effort put into it.

I almost feel like they were doing something good but quit half-way because deadlines or something, they didn’t even do much follow up after release besides patching game-breaking bugs that didn’t allow people to play at all. If I’m recalling correctly the beta correctly, they were trying to put the teleporter utility back in, but ended up not for who knows what reason (although I never got to play it at that time personally due to game launching bugs, so I watched someone else also in the beta who could).

Sonic Generations Collection

How do you define a good Sonic game?

The series was struggling with the right answer for this question. The Sonic Generations attempt was one of the last possible calls for SEGA to do things right and… they succeeded! This game single-handedly revived the franchise for me and gave me the kick to check out the old classics for the first time (I’m the Dreamcast Kid). This game is really this good!

Imagine that the famous band tries to set up “The Best of…” album. They take one song from each previous album. Some of those releases were horrible and you think: “Remaking this track is a bad idea! This was a dark age for this band!”. You are relieved when you notice that the “that one” dreaded song sounds so new and fresh! Even more… you notice that every song has one version for the original vocalist and second for the new one that came into band recently. This is Sonic Generations in nutshell. They took a level from every single game in the main series and remade them to fit for both: the old and cute Classic Sonic with 2D gameplay and the Modern Sonic with the boost mechanic. Fear Sonic ‘06 no more! Crisis City in this game better than ever! And you can cure your PTSD from the Silver boss fight here! Don’t like him? IT’S NO USE! He will suffer and you will be satisfied!

This game is short and story is cheesy, but has a lot of replayability due to multiple routes each zone has to provide a unique experience for the player. This invites them to explore new routes and experiment on which route is the shortest and best to present a satisfying experience of “Going fast.”

You play as Classic Sonic, which represents Sonic’s origins as a 2D game, and play as Modern Sonic, which represents Sonic when he transitioned into a 3D game.

Classic Sonic incorporates all of Sonic’s moveset from Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles and plays like how he is back in the Genesis era, but with modern controls. Classic Sonic’s zones are played in 2D setting, but the environment has a 3D look.

Tomb Raider: Underworld

Tomb Raider: Underworld

Underworld is the ending to the Tomb Raider revival of the mid 2000’s, which was helmed by the folks at Crystal Dynamics. It concludes the central plot thread of Tomb Raider Legend: finding Lara’s mother, whilst introducing the villain of Anniversary (The Tomb Raider 1 remake) into the fray: Natla.

From the start, you can tell this game has a much more ambitious scope. Past the tutorial level, every other level takes place in large, open environments with freedom of movement far beyond anything presented in “Legend”. Whereas Legend had smaller, linear levels with a sizable emphasis on combat and action segments, Underworld eliminates all of that and focuses on large, open environments with more complexity to their puzzles. There’s also more actual tombs in Underworld than Legend, which took place mostly in urban environments and buildings.

Tomb Raider: Underworld takes you on an adventure through Norse mythology to find the lost island of Avalon. Beautiful levels, fun gameplay, exploration, and amazing visuals make this game a beloved addition to the series and truly worthy of the name Tomb Raider.

USFIV is currently one of the most balanced 1 on 1 2D fighting games with a good fighting system, good amount of characters, moves and game modes. SFIV is a 2D fighting game like most of the previous Street Fighter iterations. It has various characters which increases the chance of some that may catch your fancy. There is even more characters in this ultra edition which is an upgrade to previous SFIV versions. Fighting speed in general is normal compared to other 2D fighters which leaves a good open window for command inputs in-between. This PC version have a decent system settings and controllers compatibility other than x-input (xbox 360/one based) devices and keyboards. For all characters the fighting system has 6 main buttons, blocks are done by holding back, standing, crouching and jumping attacks, throws, dashes, wakeup delay, characters get stunned after certain amount of attacks taken, a 2 stage charge attack (called focus) for each character which strength varies by the duration pressed, characters have special moves and there is extra bar (called super) which has 4 stages (bars) and can be used for having ex version of some specials by using one bar and a super which consumes all 4 bars, there is finishing move bar (called ultra) and each character has 2 ultras which can be selected individually or together, focus then dashing can be used to link some attacks (called focus cancel) and can be used to cancel an active attack for defense and backing up. Attacks are categorized into high, medium, low, overhead, throws, some characters has command throws also and fully charged focus is unblockable. All non-normal attacks will chip the health bar when blocked and can finish a round. All characters have taunts which can be disabled before matches. Arcade mode acts like story mode with few (1 or more) still images with narration as prologue and a small animated clip as epilogue with rival battles before the boss battle that has special before and in match dialogue. There is versus mode for local or computer battles and also there is computer versus computer matches. Training mode is on normal quality with ability to record actions for the dummy and can be locally controlled or computer controlled and all bars are modifiable, there is challenge mode which is a series of combos for each characters. Online multiplayer is decent now but with less players than the consoles versions as there is no cross platform multiplayer, all online battles have voice chat, there is ranked battles, online training, room battles and tournament like rooms with one active match at a time and all can be open invitation to all or friend invitations and in rooms you can set the number of slots for which type. Online battle can be selected to start and halt current offline matches when found, this applies to arcade and training modes. Online and versus matches replays can be saved although in limited amount and you can watch some matches for high ranking players and some recent replays for others all can be viewed by region or characters. There is a ranking system for your overall points and your character points. You can be unique online by having an icon, a title and a vs screen message and all are pre made. There is different customs for each character and a lot of them are unfortunately available as DLC.

Ys Origin

Ys Origin

The Ys series is quite a mixed bag. I played Ys Origin after playing Ys 1 & 2 (since that is the order they were released in, though obviously “Origin” is a prequel). I wasn’t hugely impressed by Ys 1 & 2 - they were kind of ok, but had lots of issues; the lore was uninteresting and the story didn’t really resonate and the gameplay itself was … tepid.

Ys Origin, however, breaks free from the earlier games by radically changing the gameplay, and this is a good thing. Rather than an Ultima-style open world framework that the earlier games used, Origin simplifies all that to become effectively a linear dungeon crawler threaded through a series of highly structured narratives. The gameplay itself is distilled down to much more enjoyable and consistent core combat mechanics, while retaining the structure of building up to periodic challenging boss fights.

Isometric, Action, RPG, Multiple Characters

In Ys you play as one of three selectable characters and go through their journey in order to help the goddesses fight off evil that dwells within the tower. Each character has their own dialogue and conflicts most notably the secret third character has a lot more bosses than the other two.

Progression

Traveling from floor to floor can take some time, luckily you have goddess statues that teleport you instantly to other statues you have unlocked along your travels in the giant tower. This allows the player to be able to teleport to any floor he thinks requires more exploring weather its to grab a item he missed or simply to teleport back to floor 1 for upgrades. Not only that but you are fully healed when in range of the goddess statue, you can also save.

Mafia II (Classic)

Mafia II (Classic)

Mafia II is one of the best organized crime games, especially if we take realistic games with organized crime as the main theme. It’s also one of the best third-person shooter, and aged very well, even a decade later, it still feels as good as back in 2010.

Story

You play as sicilian immigrant, Vito Scaletta, whose family traveled to the USA looking for a better life, but reality turned out to be more grim and harsh than Vito’s parents imagined. Seeing how his father lives a miserable life and became a drunkard due to his hard job and poverty, Vito decided to not repeat his mistakes. His father eventually dies during the accident at the docks. He met Joe, a local bully and a cool guy, and eventually, due to lack of jobs and poverty, the two decided to become a small time criminals, thieves, essentially, during one such operation, Vito got caught, and between going to prison or helping USA with the invasion of Sicily, as a native italian speaker, he decided to go to war. And that’s only the beginning of his life path.

“I BECAME A CRIMINAL BECAUSE I DID NOT WANT TO BECOME A VICTIM”

Welcome to Empire Bay. Sunny place full of opportunities for those who can take them. Yes, I’m talking to you Vito & Joe. Yes, you too Mr. Vinci. I see you over there Alberto Clemente. Yeah, that’s right Carlo Falcone. I can keep on naming these fellas over and over again because this game was filled with gentlemen like these.

Vito Scalleta got tired of bureaucratic bullsh*t so he got shot right in the butt, that he could leave Europe and go straight back to Joe, so these two can put in the work, get up in the Mafia hierarchy, sky rocketing up in the mob family ladder so he can get what they all want - THAT GREEN THING.
