Ancient Cities

So, I think I have enough time to comment on this now. As a disclaimer, I never backed the game but saw it a year ago, read all the stories about the time it’s taking, that the game was empty, the devs not being capable of this challenge and even that it was a scam. I put it off for these reasons, wanting to be sure I wasn’t wasting what is a lot of money for EA, but I do not think this is a scam any more, no. I think the devs have wasted time building a custom game engine and may have overfaced themselves, yes, but the level of detail and the continued work on the game to me shows this is a passion project that they will continue, if slowly.

The game looks amazing, much better than Dawn of Man (even with my Realistic Stone Age mod ). I will update with a proper review after I will play some more, but so far I can say this (compared to DOM):

  • You can choose to start playing from 10,000 BC up to 3500 BC, and the end of the last glacial age is depicted on the overview map, as it shows how snow evolves from one date to another, even from summer to winter (I do not know if anything else changes). In DOM you can only play in 10,000 BC.

I really enjoy this game! The perfect amount of challenge while still being great fun and just a little bit mindless since I play to relax and not to create more work for myself. I look forward to the next evolution of this game!

Very nice take on SimCity-style games. I especially enjoy the graphs of various metrics, and ability to really drill down into each silizen’s life. I am excited for continued development and look forward to how this game will evolve!

From a playability standpoint - on my laptop (8gb ram, i7 (4 cores @ 2.20GHz)) at lowest settings, the game plays reasonably when going on the 1x speed. Either of the faster speed options causes the game to become very choppy. Even when using 1980’s top-down style it seems to be quite slow (perhaps because that’s just a different camera angle?). Increasing simulation speed also seems to mess with the power grid distribution: when my network is not super-saturated with electricity, running at a faster simulation speed makes parts of my city run out of power. But if I turn it back down to 1x and wait a bit of time, all of the buildings will come back online.

Great game with loads of content and mods to keep the game fun. New DLC’s are a big reason why I’m still playing this game after so many years. I wouldn’t recommend buying them for the full price though, they are quite expensive. Just wait for a sale where most of them are 50% off.

If you’re into building stuff from scratch, loved Sim City, and cannot help yourself trying to do something better and more beautiful, buy the game. There’s nothing better. Be prepared to give a healthy chunk of your life, you budding City Planner!

Intuitive design, layered sophistication in game play, and plenty of mods and tools keeps you engaged for hundreds of hours.

I’m a relative amateur with a mere 339 hours of playtime. Just saying.

Enjoy!

SimCity™ 4 Deluxe Edition

SimCity™ 4 Deluxe Edition

Ever thought you could make a better city? Pah, I could be a better Mayor; well now you can! SimCity 4 is just that and offers this opportunity and lets you sit in the chair titled “mayor”. I’ve definitely clocked up more hours in the days I installed this on ME and XP.

SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition is another one of those games that has been created by EA… EA? Not again you say - except this time.. EA has really created a game and has polished it up to its standards. SC4 is one of the older prequels to ‘Societies’ and the 2013 SimCity relaunch; released after Sim City 3000, it showed off superb graphic capabilities at the time and invented new ways to enjoy building a simulated city, where you play as the city’s major, managing the: finances, housing stock, roads, ports, resident satisfaction, transit, and employment.

Ah, SimCity 4, the best, in my opinion, of all of the SimCity games. The graphics are dated, being that this was released around fifteen years ago, but don’t let that deter you. Play times depend on how much you enjoy city building games. I myself have spent 2-4 hours today playing it.

The U-Drive-It mode is pretty cool, as it lets you drive through your transportation system with a variety of vehicles, but can get annoying over time with the other cars.

The regions are a nice addition, as you can have cities depend on each other, plus some of the regions come in the shape of several real-life cities, albeit with no structures. In the same vein, importing and exporting cities & regions are useful. If you have a sprawling metropolis and want to share it with the world, you can! Have a police state with stations on every corner? You now can show it to your friends and family!

Cities XXL

Cities XXL

So right off the bat, Cities XXL is not substantially different from its predecessor (Cities XL). In my time with the game so far, I’ve only encountered two new features. Everything else, right down to the buildings available and the game interface, are unchanged. XXL hardly deserves to be called a sequel or sold as a new game. It’s a content patch, and not even a very good one.

When I first started playing Cities XL a few years ago, I was really impressed with it. I hadn’t really played any modern city-builder games since SimCity 4, and so the jump to 3-D graphics, the ability to draw curved roads, and the sheer size of the maps was enough to win me over initially. But as I’ve played the game more, it’s limitations and weaknesses have become much more apparent and hard to ignore. This is especially true in the game’s interface and controls, which are very rough and full of nagging annoyances. When compared to the much smoother and organic controls of games like Tropico 5, the modern [disastrous] SimCity reboot, and even older games like Caesar IV, Cities XL really starts to look bad.

This part of the review is ONLY for players new to the franchise! If you DO already have a Cities XL game - skip to the second section below - or tl;dr - it’s a rip-off patch for a game you already own.

So, if you don’t already own a Cities XL game, then this game offers a lot of fun and creativity, and is arguably THE best city-creator on the PC scene at the time of writing. Unless a new offering improves on the genre, then this is the title you want, even though it’s not perfect.

BUILD THE ANCIENT CITY

Design your dream city and admire its growing power! Almost all of our buildings are based on real, historical examples of ancient (Han and Tang dynasty) Chinese structures. Place buildings with many categories and functions, and then use the remaining space to decorate the city and make it even more magnificent.

EXPLORE CHINA

Play on one of the hand-crafted maps and visit the most beautiful regions of the Far East. Regardless of whether you prefer bamboo forests, coastal shores or snowy mountains, you will find a place for yourself.

PLAY SOLO OR WITH FRIENDS

The game is adapted for both relaxing single-player experience and more competitive multiplayer. You can enjoy this experience on your own, or invite your friends and start building your settlements right away!

DEVELOP YOUR COMMUNITY

Take care of the welfare of your citizens, meet their needs, make them happier and collect higher taxes. When they are really satisfied, they will be able to advance to the next social group, which will bring more diversity to the city, higher income, but also the need to provide them with even more resources.

PRODUCE RESOURCES

Create infrastructure, govern production chains and increase efficiency of your city’s industry. Plant crops, raise animals, extract raw materials, process them and obtain advanced products. As your settlement grows, you will need more and more of them.

SURVIVE WINTER

The game includes a system of seasons thanks to which you will be able to observe how your settlement changes over time. Take advantage of the abundance of summer to prepare for a harsh winter. Will you be able to survive?

FIGHT THE DISASTERS

As time passes, both natural and godly threats arise. Protect your citizens from catastrophes by creating specialized buildings or negotiating with the Gods. The Emperor counts on you!

MAKE DECISIONS

Take part in random events, make decisions and shape the direction in which your settlement develops. Each one of them has either good or bad consequences, which you will have to deal with. Also, be wary of Gods’ opinions , as they may like some of your choices more than others, or they may hate your every decision deeply…

MANAGE TRADE ROUTES

Create and optimize trade routes. Unlock new partners, get rid of surpluses, earn money or fill in gaps if you haven’t managed to produce something yourself. As you develop, you will be able to trade with more and more landlords, which will increase the number of goods suppliers and unlock new ones.

WORSHIP OR IGNORE THE GODS

Our game is full of Chinese mythology. You can build temples or tall pagodas to satisfy the Gods, who will reward you with unique bonuses. You can also ignore the Gods, but you will have to face the consequences of your actions. No matter what you do, the course of the game and its environment shall change accordingly.

ERECT MONUMENTS

Show the might of your cities by building amazing monuments. Their erection will be a real challenge for you, so before you can do that, your city needs to be developed and prosperous. The end result will definitely be worth the effort!

IMMERSE YOURSELF

We have created aesthetic graphics, wonderful music and a decorated interface, so that you can immerse yourself and seamlessly enjoy ancient China and all of its wonders. The game is designed with emotions and atmosphere in mind, so you won’t be disappointed!

Parkitect

Parkitect

Let me begin with, I was one of the individuals who contributed to the Kickstarter to help this game become a reality. Heck, I remember when Sebastian was showing off his concept work using programmer art to demonstrate the systems he was working on. Then Garret hopped on the train and the game REALLY took off. I would liken this game to a beautiful fusion of the original Theme Park by Bullfrog and RollerCoaster Tycoon 2. I will explain the how and why later on in my review. This game as a whole is a massive labor of love by everyone involved and it truly shines because of this.

Real player with 1688.1 hrs in game

Buckle up; it’s a lot of words!

I initially “reviewed” Parkitect back in 2016, while the game was still in it’s alpha state of development. Not a full-fledged review, more a preview. It would be unfair to judge something that isn’t done. Yet, back then, I felt the urge to write about this wonderful game (as will be clear when you read it below).

The alpha version in 2016, it was already really good. But it has always been good. The thing is, now, it has consistently gotten better - and better. Every month, somehow, the updates are exciting and interesting. Sometimes grand, sometimes small but helpful. Always stepping up from the excellent work that has been done before.
