ISLANDERS

ISLANDERS

Islanders Review

This adventure never ends!

Some key points that this game offers:

  1. Procedural Generation; the fun never ends!

  2. Two gameplay modes

  3. Indie Gem 5/5

Gameplay & Controls:

The game is played with your keyboard and mouse; the layout and keys are pretty simplistic. This is in no way whatsoever a bad thing! This is simply a minimalistic game that doesn’t require much to offer you hours of joy.

You start the game on one island, choosing between two build packs. Once chosen it is up to you to determine where to place your buildings. Depending on the position that you build, you will receive a score for each placed building. There are several factors that multiply the score; it can either be increased or receive a loss. It comes down to some strategic thinking.

THE ONE-SENTENCE SUMMARY…

Islanders is a simple yet sophisticated city builder that is both incredibly relaxing and delightfully addictive—and a VERY worthy addition to your game library!

[➕] THE POSITIVES

  • The ART STYLE. The game makes the absolute most of its colors and shapes to provide a minimalistic setting where you can build and grow your idyllic island city. Everything is themed to “fit” together—from the sprawling farmlands to the Tetris-like cities and manufacturing areas—and ultimately results in an island-scape that feels like your own, personal creation!

Great game. It’s not so much about managing towns, more about whether or not people survive your town managing skills. Have fun.

To me Banished set a golden standard for city builder/ colony sim games. There wasn’t anything especially new or innovative for the genre, but the mechanics and elements of the game just came together really well and the end-product was so polished. The graphics were something different, most games in this genre don’t focus on that much and usually have more simplistic pixel type graphics. This had a much more realistic look, which I thought was pretty cool.

A lot of city builder/ colony sim games have enemies that attack every so often or land you have to conquer. I like some of those games a lot, but I was also really intrigued by this one NOT having that and instead having nature as your enemy. Hunger, weather, temperature, natural disasters, etc. were your enemy instead. This focus on natural survival felt pretty original, though there are probably games that have done it before.

Townsmen - A Kingdom Rebuilt

Townsmen - A Kingdom Rebuilt

Townsmen is what I imagine a poor mobile clone of The Settlers Online would look and play like.

The art is actually pretty nice and seemingly inspired by Settlers Online and similar browser-based timer games. Unfortunately, the gameplay is based directly on those kinds of games as well, while implementing some of the worst practices of mobile games to boot. This makes it an okay time waster for mobile users if you can’t afford anything better, but a truly terrible experience on PC.

The user interface is a mobile-only monstrosity. Nothing here is designed for screens larger than 10". Between enormous icons popping up in a scrolling list and giant buttons on-screen at all times, this is the definition of a low effort mobile port. Made worse by everything being hidden behind buttons and sub-sub-menus that contain next-to-no content. This due to fonts sized for people who’ve given up on being able to read anything even with reading glasses. Even basic features like building rotation are missing because mobile screens apparently can’t handle that many giant buttons on screen at once. The build menu is also cluttered with DLC buildings even if you don’t own the DLC in order to motivate players to buy said DLC, a classic scummy mobile game move.

I am a big fan of townsmen games on java mobiles, I’ll say yeah this game is okay. I’m being honest with you I don’t really like the new vector style, even so, it’s enough for the current era. you know what my favorite ? look at this link . You see? that game is better than this. why ? first, the old game like townsmen 6 when you upgrade your building the building sprite will change. Unlike this steam version you only get new stars on its detail page. yeah this game it’s worth since it can scale to big resolution but no one can beat townsmen 6. :)

What a brilliant and fun game, you have the ability to build in all 6 directions without gravity holding you back. All of the buildings are beautifully designed and futuristic, with more things being added as the game continues to develop. To add a layer of depth to the game its more than just building zones for residents, commerce and industry you also get to manage the resources necessary to allow the buildings to grow via demand of certain products that you can choose manufacture in your city or buy on the in game market.

This game has A LOT of promise and a lot of improvements. Such as better sound effects like city sounds like the noise of cars or even have citizens walking around. simple things would be nice. Also like to see different modes of play besides free modes or retro modes would like to see perhaps a sandbox mode. would also like to see maybe different enviorments maybe different sky colors and perhaps having maybe different planets scenes like what would it be like to build a sky city on Jupiter or something with different enviorments effects and collecting different elements. Just some ideas

UPDATE 6-8-2020: The game, like most, also has an official Discord community. While the members are generally kind and helpful, the server is overseen by a handful of moderators. These few moderators subjectively decide whether or not you’re a “Good Builder” and rank you up according to their personal opinions. I find this very discouraging, as I’ve noticed certain unfair biases among a few of these moderators. We spend many hours on these creations using our imaginations, only to have a mod invalidate or overlook our entire creation. Whose to say we aren’t all Legendary Builders?

I began my journey with this game back when it first started as a little mobile project. As someone who always plays Minecraft in creative mode, I was immediately interested. It had a fun concept, beautiful visuals, decent interface, and constant updates. I think the updates were the best part early on. There were usually lots of new items making each update feel like an early Christmas. What really impressed me was the care the developers took to read people’s reviews, respond, and actually implement a large portion of the (unsolicited) suggestions. I’ve seen very few developers who care that much about player feedback.

Mini Motorways

Mini Motorways

Absolutely LOVE this game. As in Mini Metro, this game is easy to learn how to play and yet hard to master, in certain ways. The game is a bit more complex than Mini Metro, but still a relaxing style of play. The RNG of this game seems to be more prominent as well.

As you start the game a “business” appears as a large rectangle building, also appearing are houses that contain two cars. You must build your citie’s infrastructure to move these cars to like colored businesses, to pick up “pins” that start congregating at each business. You always have road tiles to do this with as soon as the game begins. Different maps provide different things to begin with, you may start with a bridge or tunnel, depending on the map. Other building materials are round-a-bouts, traffic lights and motor ways.

Of the two ‘Mini Mobility’ games [this should actually be this series’ compound name], ‘Motorways’ is probably the easier one, ultimately. After all, I’ve gotten all the achievements for it, whereas ‘Metro’s harder achievements elude me to this day. It’s got a bit of a steeper learning curve, though. But once you wrapped your head around all the new elements and rules, you’ll love this one as much as you do ‘Mini Metro’. A very good continuation without just doing the same thing again.
