The Immortal

The Immortal

This version is utterly disappointing, I was hoping for a much better experience than the console versions I played long ago. Honestly I played the Genesis version about a year ago so it is even more painful this PC versions lack of execution. Most of the interactions with enemies are barely as enthralling as the Sega Genesis or N.E.S. ports of the game, lots of missing dialog. The gore and fatalities in the Genesis version are strangely absent which makes me upset I sold that one thinking a PC let alone Steam edition would be the true experience…I was sadly mistaken. There is no options to change anything (including resolution), no save/load ability, no enhancements, no play this or that version of the game. Combat is slower than the Genesis also and there are no grunts or cries of pains when attacks land. Surprisingly the consoles music sounds better somehow too which shouldn’t be possible! PLEASE AVOID THIS WAS A SHAMEFUL CASH GRAB NOT A RELEASE THAT RESPECTED THE FANS!!!!!!

SD GUNDAM G GENERATION CROSS RAYS

SD GUNDAM G GENERATION CROSS RAYS

This is a game whose enjoyment comes with several caveats: Do you like gundam (or other giant robot shows)? Do you enjoy oldschool turn based strategy? Can you overlook some rough bits of rough presentation for an otherwise pretty enough experience?

This is a very niche game for fans of the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise. I say that, but it’s geared more towards those who have watched the more modern shows (and shows that the west have more experience with). No Universal Century (barring one special machine); this focuses on Gundam’s Wing, SEED, 00, and Iron Blooded Orphans. Your enjoyment of this game is tired very closely to how much you enjoyed those series.

Super Deformed Gundam

SD Gundam G Generation is a series of strategy-RPG games that focus on the Gundam. Developed by TOM CREATE and Released by Bandai. It’s long time series since late 90s and still continue to this day. However SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays is special than other because it’s the first in this series that is officially localized outside of Japan and got released worldwide in major platform.

The game is actually very popular much like Super Robot Wars counterpart in Japan, as it’s only game that allow wide customization and ability to use many Gundam in the way beyond imagine. Countless of animations and copious eye candy fanservices, each mobile suit can have unique animations for themselves for each moveset, animation for dodging, animation for making entrance and exit and much more. The story that catches on the glimpse of beauty presented in the series are what make the them great despite the subjective Super Deformed fashion and somewhat straightforward gameplay.

Note: I could not get the game to work at first. After contacting support I received the following advice which ended up working despite my skepticism:

Uninstall the game and delete the files

Restart the computer

Deactivate the antivirus

Install the game

I have played SCRAP games before in person (both 10ish person escape rooms and large 2k person events). I have not previously played any of their online/digital content. So far, I have only played the free portion of the game, which includes all of Day 1 and the beginning setup of Day 2. The setup of both days includes a video with some characters, 9 people with special items and the king. It seems from what I have seen so far you will need to defeat 4 monsters with the help of the 9 people. This will let you open a chest to help defeat the demon/escape from the demon fortress/something like that. There’s also some mysterious flashing light they ask you to investigate.

I somehow expected more. The details to be higher or some base building or solder selection.

now I know this is early access and for a game that only ask for this price, it is asking too much. Yet I have been spoiled by X-com and other game of that standard.

I love that it is in real time. And I see great potential for the game. But I am not ready to commit yet. And I feel that if you are unfamiliar to playing beta games you are properly going spoil this game for yourself if you play it this early.

Tears of Avia

Tears of Avia

Update: I originally wrote this review on launch day, I have now completed one full playthrough and adjusted some comments to reflect this.

A great genre aware indie game. If you love JRPG’s then this will embody every trope, cliche and worn-to-the-ground charisma you’ve come to love in the best ways possible.

With a selection of protagonists straight out of a pregen dungeons and dragons adventure, colourful and classic personalities along with bright and iconic designs (RIP Reina’s spine) there’s someone you’re bound to love. I myself was torn between the obviously-the-protagonist Kai and the all too matching a description Iris. And the rest of the cast, so far, hasn’t been a let down either for me. From the hard working superior you bump into to the obviously-not-merlin (which I have nicknamed Fauxlin) provides plenty of laughs. Although you don’t spend much time with some of the later characters, revisiting previous locations will sometimes provide interesting inter-character dialogue that you can watch while in the tavern, and replaying some levels with mixed up parties will let you see interesting dialogue combinations. With the added bonus who you recruit and how you treat your party members changing their outcome in the epilogue also, some of which can be quite sad.

This review has been updated to reflect my thoughts after completing the game on normal.

1. Nice character and enemy designs

2. Nice animations (you can skip them and enemy movement)

3. Good music and the main menu theme song is catchy

4. Varied skill trees kind of encourage skill experimentation

5. Loot from battles is worthwhile - a nice gameplay loop of finding better gear

6. Combat is streamlined (healed after battle and can quickly retreat to town)

7. When you equip a new weapon its shown in battle and also the main character in town exploration
