Unto The End

Unto The End

I want to start of by saying that I have now beat this game 3 times. This game is truly a 9/10 for me as a standalone game. Does this mean this game is perfect? No. Does it mean it’s for everyone? No.

First: the not so good of this game. Initially, the combat in the game feels clunky. It’s quite difficult to learn early on, and the first play through can be VERY frustrating at times. Once the combat is learned well, it feels very satisfying though, but it never gets easier. There are no tutorials in game except for the “sparing area” which can be accessed from any fire. Though this helps with the basics, I wish there were a few more advanced techniques gone over. Another con for the game is the apparent random damage amount a player takes from enemies. It feels like sometimes you’re really hardy, and other times you’re a piece of over ripe fruit. Initially this can be frustrating, and apparently illogical, but after DM’ing 2TON about this in the game, I was told that damage variance comes from the current position of vulnerability the character is in. For example: if you are rolling when you are hit, you take 2 or 3 times the damage than if you are in a guarded position. As a design decision, I think that this makes sense for the type of game this is, but I would like to have maybe seen at least a mention of this in the “sparing area”. Last con for this game is that in some areas visibility of the character is frustratingly difficult where you need to interact with something because of placement of a rock or something.

Death is inevitable

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

Unto The End (UTE) is a cinematic platformer that like several other indies rakes in uniqueness and originality. The main focus is the challenging combat that has excellent nuance. It doesn’t have much of a setup nor does it try and hold your hand at all. I should also address the storyline or rather, lack thereof. All that is shown is a Father leaves his family to presumably go on a hunting expedition. Of course, it isn’t long before he gets into trouble and players must aid him through an unrelenting frozen wasteland to return to his home.

Very cute game! I like the campaign approach of the game, going through the story in the form of levels was pretty fun!

There was that one level in the campaign that I really really enjoyed and caught me off guard, not gonna spoil what was it, but you’ll know which one I’m referring to when you get to it!

I think the price is about right for the amount of content the game has right now; crossing fingers the rest of the story will be released in a future update.

The Eternal Castle [REMASTERED]

The Eternal Castle [REMASTERED]

Read my full review at https://www.vgr.com/eternal-castle-remastered-pc-game-review

In the indie game scene, a lot of games take inspiration from the games of the past. Typically this comes in the form of tributes to oldschool consoles like the NES, SNES and Mega Drive. But it’s not often you see games that pay homage to the graphics of old IBM PC’s. The Eternal Castle, a supposed remake of a lost 1987 PC game, is such a game. And much in the vein of the game MURI, it acts as a tribute to old school PC games from the late 80’s and early 90’s. In this review we’ll be taking a look at this game and also discuss its legitimacy as a remaster. So strap in, it’s time to explore the CGA glory of The Eternal Castle.

The Eternal Castle is a tribute to the cinematic platformers from the past, such as Prince of Persia or Another World . This genre does not get a lot of representation these days, so I want to support developers that make games for a limited audience. Let’s be honest, this game is made for people with nostalgia for those clunky platformers. I really enjoy the gameplay because it’s very faithful, and any subjective criticism that I have does not take away anything from its artistry (which is something really special). As far as I know, the original game that is being remastered was “lost”, but I do know that this remaster imitates animation cycle from Prince of Persia . I wish the developers would give the credit for the sources of inspiration, instead of just claiming that it’s a remaster of a classic masterpiece that nobody played. But let’s make something very clear, this game combines the features from several titles, and could not exists in its current form if it wasn’t for them.

Two Strikes

Two Strikes

You feel the adrenaline pump though you as you inch closer to your opponent. Testing his defence you make a small swing with your blade and the ring of steel hitting steel fills the air. You leap back but, he presses the attack! A lighting flash from above as the hiss of metal once again masks the sound of footsteps. You realize the next move is a faint a second late as red hot pain fills your entire being. After another leap back you take in your situation. You’re hurt but alive. He smiles at you, takes a step closer and winds up for a powerful swing. you feel a wash of air rush past your neck and head as you lean back and follow through with a powerful swing of your own. suddenly everything is quiet. you take a deep breath as your opponent falls to the ground.

TWOOO STRIKES?!

But the saying goes “Fool me once, strike one, fool me twice, strike three.”

WHERE’S STRIKE TWO? THERE’S NO TWOOOO STRIKES! THIS IS MADNESS! AHAHAHAHAHA

Fast-paced gameplay with spectacular visuals and a breathtaking soundtrack.

It’s very unique as a fighting game too. The meta is derived entirely of psych-outs, counters, and whiff punishes. There’s no okizeme, no combos, no blockstrings, not even crossups. it’s pure grounded neutral. It’s the epitome of simple, yet deep gameplay.
