Skitt

I want to first of all thank the developer for offering me a free evaluation key to his first game title here on Steam so that I could provide this review.

Unfortunately, that’s about all the thanks I can give this developer. I certainly can’t thank him for cobbling together a bunch of ultra cheap Unity store assets into the massive mess of a game he presents to the Steam store here. It’s a nightmare and asking a nickel for this game would be asking way too much for it.

Take a look for yourself in my First Impressions Review video HERE:

Phantom Hysteria

Phantom Hysteria

Phantom Hysteria is a 1-4 player, online co-op paranormal investigation and banishment game. Take on ghost-hunting contracts with your taped-together equipment as one of four playable P.I.N.E characters. Hone your skills for your designated class, utilize an array of equipment to decipher your clues, and use that to identify your contracted apparition.

Choosing from a variety of thrilling maps, you and your team will be required to do everything you can to document, and then eliminate the entity from this plane; if you manage to banish it, you’ll have a satisfied customer and a job well done. Afterward, it’s on to the next contract. But, if you are unsuccessful, something from beyond the mortal coil may be waiting to enter this world…

Phantom Hysteria’s Early Access will have four playable characters, four maps, and four entities available at launch.

“The Paranormal Investigation and Neutralization Experts guarantee results in no less than one night. With state-of-the-art equipment and field agents with expertise in lore, UrbanEx, technology, and show business, P.I.N.E will deliver a cohesive report on the ghost and its activities upon payment. All additional services will cost extra.”-CEO Michael Evans

It was supposed to be a simple job. Get in, get footage, get results. But the things we call paranormal, these ‘entities’, are lingering manifestations of fear, sorrow, and fury. The reason they linger is the same reason they are hard to exterminate. Whatever happens, be sure you keep the red light of your camera on. The camera should be live, even if you aren’t.

The entities in this game are influenced by the events of American history. The entities you hunt as P.I.N.E agents are connected to the fabric of who we are as a nation; it’s up to you to unbury the worst horrors of the American south, even if it means giving up your life in the process. From antebellum houses to abandoned sanatoriums, investigators are guaranteed a road trip of a lifetime.

Minds without bodies, feelings without souls. Entities linger on the edge of our reality, reaching over from the other side to manipulate the physical world in terrifying and lethal ways. To properly approach hunting these entities, certain clues will reveal how these entities manipulate the world; and you.

Phantom Hysteria’s missions put four P.I.N.E field agents into your control. Each agent has multiple customization options and dialogue that are unlocked through play. Agents of P.I.N.E have backgrounds and aspirations that fuel how they interact with every mission; but much like the ghosts, they have secrets that bleed into the world. Everyone is running from something.

P.I.N.E doesn’t mess around; but if they did, it would be within their southern United States headquarters. P.I.N.E’s warehouse is available for agents to access their accolades, outfits, and career information. Agents can pinpoint their next move, train using the warehouse’s Paranormal Investigation Training Center, and purchase their consumables.

“WARNING-REDACTED”

Regardless of who you choose to play as, agents of P.I.N.E will be offered a selection of careers to choose from at the start of the game. More missions lead to further experience in that career, but investigators are free to change careers between missions for any reason.

*** Engineer

  • Media Specialist

  • Communicator

  • Investigator

  • (Soloable) Jack of All Trades**

Careers will not only assist in your exploration of haunts but allow you to further capitalize on the entities you find lurking within.

When every crucial detail of the entity is recorded, the real mission begins. Consisting of multiple phases, haunts will task you with challenging objectives that bring out the survivalist of you and your team. These objectives will assist in your attempt to banish entities from this mortal plane; but missteps in doing so could risk releasing something more dangerous onto the world…

Boundary

Boundary

Boundary is a multiplayer tactical space-based shooter that puts players in the role of a heavily armed astronaut, called an Astroperator, engaging in fierce team vs team zero gravity firefights and executing low-gravity operations on orbiting space installations against other enemy Astroperators and other entities.

Powered by your EMU suit, you can now navigate the harsh atmosphere of space and orbiting installations in order to engage enemy combatants in a 3-dimensional battlefield where threats come at you from all angles. This is astronaut combat more akin to dogfighting where your angle of attack and position can make all the difference.

Personalize your protective space suit and your arsenal of modified weaponry. Be a keen-eyed sharpshooter executing long range kills from afar or get in close and personal as an Assaulter, taking the fight forward. Modify and upgrade your chosen primary weapon from a wide selection of stocks, grips, scopes, barrels, and ammo types to coordinate with your play style and create a weapon and class appearance unique to you.

Heavily inspired by real life industrial technology and space exploration, Boundary features a varied selection of multiplayer maps including a wreck strewn debris field, Solar Farm and so on. These maps provide Astroperators with a range of diverse and challenging combat environments.

Weapon customization, multiple combat classes to choose from, including combat medics, snipers, support, and utilizing special devices like the grappling hook to help navigate complex map design will make your combat more unpredictable and challenging. Gain the tactical advantage and employ cunning strategies in multiplayer combat to gain the winning edge.

Tears of Avia

Tears of Avia

Update: I originally wrote this review on launch day, I have now completed one full playthrough and adjusted some comments to reflect this.

A great genre aware indie game. If you love JRPG’s then this will embody every trope, cliche and worn-to-the-ground charisma you’ve come to love in the best ways possible.

With a selection of protagonists straight out of a pregen dungeons and dragons adventure, colourful and classic personalities along with bright and iconic designs (RIP Reina’s spine) there’s someone you’re bound to love. I myself was torn between the obviously-the-protagonist Kai and the all too matching a description Iris. And the rest of the cast, so far, hasn’t been a let down either for me. From the hard working superior you bump into to the obviously-not-merlin (which I have nicknamed Fauxlin) provides plenty of laughs. Although you don’t spend much time with some of the later characters, revisiting previous locations will sometimes provide interesting inter-character dialogue that you can watch while in the tavern, and replaying some levels with mixed up parties will let you see interesting dialogue combinations. With the added bonus who you recruit and how you treat your party members changing their outcome in the epilogue also, some of which can be quite sad.

This review has been updated to reflect my thoughts after completing the game on normal.

1. Nice character and enemy designs

2. Nice animations (you can skip them and enemy movement)

3. Good music and the main menu theme song is catchy

4. Varied skill trees kind of encourage skill experimentation

5. Loot from battles is worthwhile - a nice gameplay loop of finding better gear

6. Combat is streamlined (healed after battle and can quickly retreat to town)

7. When you equip a new weapon its shown in battle and also the main character in town exploration

Little Backstory:

Studio 369, after really dark practices by the original dev-team Human Heads Studios, took this broken game into their hands and are polishing it to the bits. Is it perfect? Hell no, it’s still broken in places, takes long time to glue everything together, demands patience from us. Is it fun? Yes it is, especially in co-op, multiplayer. Are they finished developing it? No, they are not, far from it. It just got into the second phase, the post-release one, with much more content to come and an ongoing polishing, and I cannot wait to see what this game will become when it gets 99% finished. It’s still a long way, yes, but we are halfway there, I’m sure about it.

Real player with 40.1 hrs in game

Before I begin let me state that while I do not currently recommend the game (2021-02-20) this decision is due solely to numerous game-breaking bugs. This game has a LOT of potential, but too many things prevent it from living up to said potential. I feel that a player who would normally enjoy the game would likely be raging right after his two hour return window was up the bugs drove him crazy.

First, combat is bad. Not overall. Combat is bad due to bugs. My biggest issue is when you use a power-attack or skill to knock an NPC down. Half of the time (more frequently if it is an elite NPC) the NPC falls down and then his state resets to standing. If this is an elite NPC not only is the NPC teleported to the standing position, but it is also already in a power-attack which cannot be dodged. This can kill you if you are low on life when instead you should have a chance to attack the NPC while it is getting up.

Blood Bowl 3

Blood Bowl 3

Put on your cleats, buckle on your helmet, adjust your shoulder pads and breast plate… and (discreetly) tuck a sharp dagger into your belt.

War disappeared in the Old World when the inhabitants decided to resolve their differences by playing the god Nuffle’s sacred sport: Blood Bowl. And yet it is no less bloody than the battlefields it has replaced. Murder, mutilation, cheating, corruption, sorcery and even divine intervention come one after another on the pitch, to the delight of everyone watching!

  • Merciless, not brainless – Take charge of a team from amongst the 12 available races, each with unique characteristics, and stop your opponents from advancing by carefully positioning your players. Dodge or mercilessly eliminate whoever gets in your way and reach the end zone to score the decisive touchdown! Naturally, the best strategists should have an edge, but… who knows? A rampaging troll might eat a teammate and change the course of a match.

  • You’re the boss – Create your team, recruit your players, customize their appearance, emblems and armour, recruit cheerleaders and a coach, then take part in the most ferocious competitions in the Old World. But beware: injuries are commonplace, and it’s more than likely that some of your players will be carried off the field in a body bag, bringing a definitive end to a once-promising career…

What’s new in Blood Bowl 3

  • Based on the official rules of the latest edition of the board game, with new skills and overhauled passing mechanics

  • 12 races to choose from including, for the first time in a Blood Bowl video game, the Black Orcs, the Imperial Nobility, the Old World Alliance and the Chaos Renegades

  • Fields with special game rules to vary the types of match

  • New customization options for your coaches, cheerleaders, teams and every piece of armour worn by your players

  • A solo campaign open to all races

  • An improved competitive mode with new league management features and an official ladder

  • A flexible timer so you are free to organize practice sessions between experienced and rookie players

The brand-new solo campaign

An agent has noticed your skills as a coach and decided to finance you and your team, so you can participate in a new Blood Bowl event: the Clash of Sponsors. Will you be able to demolish your opponents and win over the spectators?

  • Play with the race of your choice

  • Take on teams sponsored by the most influential parties in the Old World

  • See how you stack up against star players who are now the faces of major brands, including the legendary Griff Oberwald

  • You will be able to use the team you built during the campaign in any other game mode.

Competitive modes with endless possibilities

In addition to the campaign and friendly matches against other players or the AI, Blood Bowl 3 has a brand-new competitive mode which lets you compete against players of all levels, from around the world:

  • Competitive seasons with an official ladder

  • Players can join a league, with new management options and the possibility of creating and configuring your own tournaments the way you want (stadiums, pitches, timing, races, etc.)

  • Regular challenges with temporary game modes

Company of Crime

Company of Crime

Sometimes at the end of the day, when you need to talk about a game you’d recommend to someone, there are situations where you won’t say it’s a “good” game, or that it’s a particular pleasure to play, but you recommend the game because, for all its flaws and shortcomings, it has a spark. It has something that among the rest, makes it unique and enjoyable. Such is the case for Company of Crime.

A game set in London of the 60s, with a focus of gang wars and a strong influence from modern X-COMs, and to some extend Phantom Doctrine, has something to seduce. And indeed, the ambiance is there. The music, the clothes, the environnement. It’s all there. Yet, the game is, well, it’s janky. There is no hiding it, there are a bunch of bugs, some of with I had the dubious honor of helping to fix, but when you consider only 2 persons did all the QA, and the game was made by a very small team, you need to understand where you’re going. It is very much a game to get in the 15 euros or less, as that’s overall the value of such a game. It’s not big budget game, and what it delivers, I’m afraid to say, can’t possibly compete with a juggernaut like Firaxis backed by the greedy bastards at 2K(“2K, you love it, we ruin it!"). The core loop is repetitive fast, the enemies not varied, and while the heavy melee focused combat feels fresh and in some aspect reminds a bit of Into the Breach by some aspect(positioning and use of your skills to control the battlefield are key, and can lead to nice combos), at the end of the day, it won’t be something able to keep you hooked for too long, which is a bit of a shame.

Company of Crime:

Every country and indeed, city, in this beautiful world of ours has notorious individuals or gangs. Some are more famous than others. Al Capone and Lucky Luciano were probably the most notorious and known gangsters during the prohibition in America. In the 1960’s, the small and isolated island known as England had its fair share of dangerous criminals, with the Krays Twins and the Richardson brothers, to mention a couple. So, what is the business of crime? How hard is it to establish yourself and, most importantly, to keep yourself at the top of your game? On the opposite side of the coin, there are people who put their lives on the line to dismantle these organisations and arrest their members one by one. Will you become the next big mobster of the 60’s, or will you fight against them as the boss of Scotland Yard’s task force? One thing is for sure, you’ll know all about Company of Crime!
