Myha: Return to the Lost Island

Myha: Return to the Lost Island

This is a little gem of a game. The island scenery is so beautiful, it encourages you to just walk around and look before you start solving the puzzles. Which is exactly what I did and why my time to complete this game was so lengthy. Yet it was time well spent and I am saddened it is over. The puzzles were interesting and in many cases difficult. They require you to be very observant and piece together information from different parts of the island. It is so satisfying when you eventually solve a puzzle, which usually opens up another puzzle to address. Kudos to the developers for such a great game. And this is just an aside, did anyone else think the little train car in the playroom looked a lot like the car in Rhem. I thought I noticed Knut Mueller’s name in the credits.

As the last opus in the Black Cube Series, Myha is also the first in the series that has been completely developed in 3D, giving free reigns to the player to explore every corners of a beautiful island located on a planet in a far away solar system.

The fact that the game shares the first two letters of its name with the famous exploration puzzle game Myst is no coincidence. Gameplay and settings are very much alike. You find yourself stranded on an unknown island after encountering a mysterious back cube. And you start exploring following clues that will, hopefully, help you get back home.

Boinihi: The Ki Codex

Boinihi: The Ki Codex

This is a remarkable game. I’ve played other Black Cube games so was familiar with a part of the back lore. Boinihi took me a little while to embrace. At first, it felt slow and the interface is a bit awkward at times. I kept wandering in a circle. But, the art is interesting (Asian themes), the voice acting easy to listen to, and the music is a beautiful score by Yazorius. Finally, I effected a change and I became totally captivated. Time stood still for me as I worked through each challenge that was presented and it took me more hours than I like to admit to work through it all.

Another excellent addition to The Black Cube series! This time using a slightly different approach, a hybrid of first person and 3rd person views. A very intriguing story to follow as you discover the mysteries of Boinihi and The K’i Codex. The scifi world is full of beauty and atmosphere with an amazing soundtrack that compliments throughout. Unique cutscenes, fx, and animations help bring life to Boinihi as well as some excellent voice overs. It’s these little details that really help it stand out! And let’s not forget the excellent puzzles which are well integrated and have just the right touch of difficulty, but don’t expect an easy adventure. You will need to think and take notes in order to solve these enigmas. :) Overall, if you are a fan of The Black Cube series and scifi myst-like adventures then you are certainly in for a treat!

Kitrinos: Inside the Cube

Kitrinos: Inside the Cube

Kitrinos: Inside the Cube is a mouse only puzzle game that radiates science fiction retrofuturism with a clear influence of Kubricks 2001: A Space Odyssey. It’s predominantly an artistic game with a handful of well thought out puzzles and a story told in short cutscenes and text.

This game piles up retrofuturistic art design with 3D models reminiscent of early 2000’s adventure games and surreal, alien environments. Aside from this conglomeration of distinguished visuals, the music is as if tailor-made. It’s strikingly well composed and adds in equal measure to the strange and captivating atmosphere.

I tend to avoid puzzle games like it’s the meaning of my life but I had to stray off that path, simply for the artwork.

It was worth it even though I didn’t manage to solve the final puzzle. The art direction fits in perfectly with the soundtrack and the ideology of the game, creating a fantastic atmosphere.

Tip: The developer has left hints and solutions to the puzzles in the community hub disscusions.
