Battle Girls

Battle Girls

A short, mecha fighting story with some romance options brought to you by the Dharker Studios.

You were chosen as a mecha pilot to represent your nation in an international competition. Just to be clear, there is no mecha action here, it’s pure VN. You have several battles to go through and multiple choices to reach one of many endings. While the VN is relatively short, to complete all scenarios will likely double the length so it’s not bad. Your choice will also influence if and who will you end up with. Writing quality is acceptable but there is not enough character development here. No real heroines' backgrounds or motivations present. Also, the main character was left as a blank slate, no sprite, no face, little to none personality. There are some slip ups and inconsistencies, e.g. wrong names used or story referring to events that did not occur due to the previous choices. Still, I enjoyed it more than expected from low budget VNs. One of better VNs from this developer.

So some background. I’m a FPS and RPG kinda person, but have played various other genres. My first visual novel was Doki Doki Literature Club, and it changed my life (good game, check it out it’s free). So when I was making a badge and got a coupon for this game, it peaked my interests.

However, instead of being just some cheap game with no depth, I was surprised to see how much depth this game’s story went into. I will admit, I don’t get the whole thing about it being a school or something, and yet they are battling other countries so they get an untrained dude to fight for them. But whatever….

Realms of Eternity

This is an impressive start to what might be an amazing game… I agree with some other reviews that the content is still in-process, but just by people who like to swing swords around and cut stuff, or shoot bows (which is actually very accurate in stark contrast to the sword-phasing in and out of contact) there is a ton of data still left on the table to be collected for refinement.

I was really impressed with the introduction of the messenger ninja, and the overall environment. Also, I had the bow & arrow mini-game freeze on me… I went back, since I was close to high score, but it froze again. boooo… Another thing with the mini-game, is that some of the enemy ninja freeze/glitch where you can’t kill them. Thus, you can not progress to the next wave.

I know this game is in Early Access and I hate to give a negative review when I can see that the developer is actively developing the game. However, what’s available right now is just not enough and it’s also not very good. It’s a nice start to what might be a good game, but I have to review the game that I played.

What’s available right now is two things. A very simple sandbox where you can cut pieces of wood / bamboo and some fruits & veggies with a sword (2 handed or 1 handed). You also have a bow & arrow wave shooter mini-game, that’s very similar to Holopoint … just not nearly half as good.

Played through the whole first Chapter.

Positives:

  • The combat and equipment system in this game is very good.

  • I really liked exploring the island and having random encounters where I have to make decisions.

  • The graphics are great, there are some things to be fixed yet, but this is an early access game!

  • The story is good and has you wanting to explore more and get to know the whole story.

What can be done better:

  • The walking feels a bit chunky, especially with the carts.

Majikoi! Love Me Seriously!

Was an instant buy for me but didn’t expect it’ll be like this….

Majikoi….YES YES YES YES! Finally, they actually did an official localization of this gem! And to bring it to steam as well! Nice going Minatosoft. Tried this game years ago using the fan-translation patch which was done splendidly by the translation team and got instantly hooked by the myriad amount of characters personality and while the story might seem generic in the sea of school life themed VN, they still did a wonderful job in delivering it and made it captivating as well. The steam version, however….I have mixed feelings for this one.

We live in a society, where a free fan translated game is superior to the same game on Steam. Wow

I want to support the devs who created a great game but these kinda half baked product isn’t doing it any favours.

You buy the Steam version, you’re getting choppy game with voices being removed for important side characters especially villains that are important to the game and changing the names for characters as well.

HENCE, must get the DLC patch from JAST USA (why it isn’t on steam though smh) and voice restoration patch to add better translation and voices so you can experience this game fully as it was meant to be. Similar to mods, but these are necessary mods that will make you mad why they didn’t do it well, idiots.

Recommend this game :smilekit:

19.08.2021 Unpolished and raw, but decent.

Ehh not best hitboxes (yours and enemies). Simplified combat. Sometimes input delay/response for your combination feels junky.

Prepare for no poise, counter hit bull$hithsu from punched enemies- they are being hit and hit you back(i understand that is an icon mechanism to track) Crowd control is not pleasent to play (prepare to spam safe move: “forward forward +P).

Fist attack needs to have bigger vertical hitbox, when enemies are very close you are unable to hit mob, or grab them

As a 43 years old gamer, I had the opportunity to play many beat’em up games on arcades. Golden Axe, Final Fight, Cadillacs & Dinosaurs, Captain Commando, Punisher and much more. I loved them all. Now, thanks to several game developers we are able to get similar experiences again. Dragon’s Crown on PlayStation, Streets of Rage 4, Mayhem Brawler and the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge are some of the very nice examples.

The art style, graphics, sounds and the general atmosphere of this game is quite good. It’s a tad slow for my liking, but still it’s good and very well varied. Instead of dozens of same enemies with different colors, Hero Concept made themed enemies per stage. I like it.

The Shadows of Pygmalion

The Shadows of Pygmalion

This VN is a straight up Magical Girls Fantasy, with attempts to deconstruct the MG genre much like Madoka Magica.

TL;DR version: Interesting lore, likeable characters, beautiful art, great music. Worth it purely for the length and depth of story-telling.

Story-wise, it’s elaborate and bittersweet, with plenty of emotional moments. However, it is also riddled with plotholes and unexplained motives/events, which makes it somewhat hard to immerse in the story. If you just enjoy it at face value, however, it is perfectly reasonable.

The Shadows of Pygmalion is a Girls Love Visual Novel made by Propeller who is also known for Tokyo Babel which MangaGamer also published in English. There is no “All-Ages version” since there is no 18+ version, but there is still content that isn’t suited for people under the age of 15.

Pygmalion is a mostly linear story with only one choice that determines which ending you get, there are four endings, with the fourth unlocking after you finish the initial three. There are also extra character-based chapters that will unlock after you’ve finished the final ending, which gives more depth and story behind the more minor characters in the story. The Visual Novel is 15 chapters excluding the character-based chapters and endings, so I’d say that there’s at least 20 hours of content if you decide to read everything.

Facts:

One time I played this game instead of studying for midterms. I never did better on midterms in my life.

Opinions:

This game is minigame-based-game-making done right. Sailing, naval battles, land battles, swordfights, dancing, sneaking into and out of town, and searching for treasure are each done in distinct minigames which are (except for sneaking and searching) engaging enough that I never think, “Aww, dang, THIS again. If only I could skip this.” (and sneaking and searching are only needed rarely enough to be a nice change of pace 90% of the times).

SAIL HO!

The lookout reports a sail on the horizon.

Shall we?”

I don’t know how many times I saw that phrase in the past. I must tell you, that I’m in an easy, yet really hard position to share my view about this game. Because how could I write a subjective review, while being an ultimate fan of “PIRATES!” C64 version? Just look at my avatar here… :)

Some reviewers here already shared some really useful and detailed information about certain parts of the game… “pros and cons” are known for now… so for this time, let me please share my feelings, impressions, and express my passion for the game with you instead. Hence this won’t be a “generic” game review.
