The game portrays an aesthetic I have a massive soft spot for - Post-apocalyptic colonial Roman Empire. The environment art is well polished and beautiful, and the art style is self-consistent and immersive. I really feel like I’m somewhere in Carthage. The cities feel appropriate for their size – Maadoran feels like a dirty, bustling metropolis down on its luck. The design of the armours and weapons are all era-appropriate, with proper, real-life names (e.g. Lorica Segmentata).

In brief: AoD ditches many of the genre long established staples to focus on the roleplaying, and this it does amazingly well; there really is nothing quite like it out there. The EA version is very much playable (there are less bugs than in many releases). The combat, which has been much the focus of attention due to its difficulty, is not awesome, but it gets the job done and it is optional.

***Since for some reason Steam has decided to implement a character limit to user reviews (what’s up with that Gabe?), you can read my whole review here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/230070/discussions/0/666827315713399977/ , but below is a very long extract:

I Loved It. It’s one encounter, 3v4, but it was so much fun. Really helped fill that D&D itch I’ve been having. If you like table top and want a combat situation then get this and play it!

Hello everyone!

This is Verinius, the creator of Lawmage Academy. I have been working alone on this project back in 2018 using RPG Maker MV. After releasing the demo in Itch, it was received positively by the community and was featured by several indie game streamers at Twitch. This is my first game and to know that people genuinely enjoyed what I have created makes me happy.

I have no background in making games so I had to learn the necessary skills by watching Youtube tutorials. Currently, I am working full time as a lawyer and work on the game in my free time. Fortunately, I was able to save up some money to commission some illustrations and music for this demo. This is a learning process for me so I am grateful for your patience and support.

I hope you enjoy the demo!

Honestly, I really enjoyed this game. The story, the characters, everything was really good and honestly might have to play it again!

This game is good.

Being the first one, ( I think, ) to ever play this other then maybe testers, and the first one to possibly buy it,

I’m only 4 chapters in so far.

While, it is a bit painfully short, I really like it.

The art style might be deceiving and make people discouraged to buy it, but in my opinion, I like it. It makes it more unique, and I reccomend it.

It has a earthbound like battle system, mixed with some other games, and it also reminded me of other things like UNDERTALE, OMORI, etc.

GLITCHED

GLITCHED

When a glitch appears in the video game world of Soren, an NPC named Gus becomes aware of you- the player. Travel together to solve the mystery of the glitch and save Gus’s friends, hometown, and digital world. As the story unfolds, Gus might start to question what role you play in his world.

Making choices will change Gus’s essence. His essence determines his personality, grants him new powers, and causes characters to react differently to him. There are six different essences and playing as each will provide a unique experience.

Not only will your choices affect Gus’s essence, but they will have a real impact on the world and characters. Make each choice carefully. What content you can experience will depend on your choices. Sometimes your choices will open up tons of new events, and other times you’ll stop quests before they can even begin. Consequences can be both good and bad.

Experience can be used to patch glitches, allowing you to access new areas and progress the story. Every activity in the game gives experience. Players are free to take on the content they want. Join the Hero Academy, raise bebos, go exploring, or kick back with your party members. No matter what you decide to do, you’ll be gaining experience and furthering your story progression.

Any time during your adventure, you can talk to Gus. You will learn about each other as you talk about his life, his surroundings, the world of Soren, existence, or whatever random thought pops into his head. As the game progresses, Gus will slowly become aware that you aren’t just a visitor in his world… but something else entirely.

There are no random encounters or grinding in GLITCHED. Fights only happen when characters in the world want to make a situation go their way. The story will change based on if you win or lose, so you’ll almost never see a game over screen. The turn-based combat uses a unique system with skills, energy, and quirks to keep every fight engaging. Collect different skills for your many allies and build a team to your liking.

  • 20+ potential party members

  • Raise bebos and enjoy that sweet monster-raising RPG content

  • A friendship & romance system for party members

  • Tons of achievements

  • Every object has unique flavor text (yes, every object. thousands of objects)

  • Cool and wacky characters

  • An arcade mode to take on unique and challenging battles

Mango Mischief

Mango Mischief

The four protagonists: Sprig, Marion, Merrow, and Arach

Mango Mischief is a throwback to a simpler time - the 16-bit era of video gaming - when JRPGs used (and abused) cliché storylines as vehicles for showing off interesting battle mechanics, difficult dungeons and monsters, complex puzzles, character leveling systems, and customizability through skills, upgrades, and gear.

_Is it time to go on a magic quest to save the world - a quest that only YOU can complete (with the help of three other party members who have different skill sets, of course)?

Do you need to collect several inanimate objects that serve no purpose other than to accidentally help the antagonist at the end of the game?

Is the antagonist merely a puppet of the true final boss (who has multiple forms)?_

Eh, maybe. Or maybe not.

The map at the beginning of Mango Mischief, showing off the early areas of the game

Mango Mischief attempts to straddle the line between paying homage to the tried-and-true tropes of JRPGs, while also parodying the memes of role-playing games with plot twists and comedy.

Self-referential humor and fourth wall breaks augment the narrative and interactions in this game, without detracting from the core gameplay:

  • Open exploration of a huge, diverse world, full of quests and monsters and loot

  • Flexibility in leveling up desired classes and gaining new abilities along the way

  • The freedom to optimize character builds and complete dungeons in any order

  • Tons of weapons, armor, accessories, and items that allow for a variety of playstyles

  • A turn-based battle system involving elemental strengths and weaknesses, an assortment of buffs, debuffs, and status ailments, and monsters that scale with your progress, to keep battles fresh, interesting, and challenging

  • Just enough random encounters to annoy players who prefer visible encounters, and just enough visible encounters to annoy players who prefer random encounters

  • At least a few interesting NPCs who aren’t merely mindless drones created for the sole purpose of furthering the plot of your special story

Please enjoy Mango Mischief, the passion project of a solo indie game developer!

The game looks like a combination of Chinese chess pieces and a map made of very simple graphics. This does have an English translation but it is hard to understand and has many grammatical mistakes. Even when you can read Chinese this is hard to get into. The tutorial didnt help much. It simply gave me an idea of what the main menu points are but it wasnt enough to figure out what to do. There are many options of things to do in the game, mostly text based menus, but it was really hard to tell what your goal was. Should you attack the other cities? Or defend against the bandits? There was no clear indication to what you should do and there was no story either. I tried to attack some bandits but the fighting system was really hard to understand too. I could select some units and attack but I didnt really see who was who or what I was attacking. After clicking attack it just said Defeated. No graphics show anyone fighting. The chance is really high that you will be disappointed when you buy this.

Doesn’t work. Game runs, but tutorial stops after one screen, no way to continue. Every command on the command screen leads to the same exact set of options. NOT JUST A NON-FINISHED PRODUCT, IT’S A NON-STARTED PRODUCT.
