Linda & Joan

Linda & Joan

Linda & Joan is a forthcoming narrative game about a British family. You play as Russell, Linda, and Joan — son, mother, and grandmother — switching between them to help the family cope with a series of traumatic events. Based on a true story.

The main game is scheduled for release in 2022. It will be part two of the Linda & Joan story. Part one is Prologue: “Four Months Earlier” which is available now.

Players experience the events from the perspectives of Russell, Linda, and Joan through exploration, conversation, and tasks designed to give emotional insight into the themes of caregiving, dying, bereavement, and homeland.

What sets Linda & Joan apart from other branching-narrative experiences is that while the player has many choices to make, nothing can change the core events that follow — there is only one ending.

However, actions, dialogue choices, and task completion, do affect the characters’ perception of events. By spending time with happier memories, taking care of themselves, and choosing the right things to say to each other, the characters — and therefore the player — will find themselves able to deal with the impossible.

The characters’ emotional states will be graphically represented in the game. The player will have to carefully balance the needs of the characters to progress, sometimes requiring difficult zero-sum tradeoffs.

These mechanisms attempt to mirror the real-life feeling of being powerless in the face of looming trauma, when you realize that no decision can affect the outcome, but you can affect how you and others feel about it.

Even when life’s story feels like it’s on rails, we still have some power over our own realities. There is still room for dignity, compassion, honesty. For fear and for love. There is a time for self-care. There is a time for duty. The choices we make will define the memories we hold for the rest of our lives.

Secret word: Introspective

Pretty sick!

So, I wanna say I felt like the disclaimer introduction was a bit too long. However, I’m not sure if it prepared me better for the overall experience because the game frankly doesn’t get more complex or engaged than you want it to be. It’s an exercise in… whatever.

It doesn’t shock you by knowing your first name (based on your steam profile). It doesn’t intrude in your beliefs, current interests, or past experiences with similar exercises.

If you’re looking for “gameplay,” this isn’t for you… but it COULD be for you on another day, at another time, or in-between other games.

So, this is highly recommendable. In fact this is the best computer game I have ever played. While I do like all of the games of the company, I love this one. I did not only buy it, but also send it to a friend as a present. Actually considering sending it to a few other friends/family members as well. This is awesome!

Why I think this is amazing:

  • The game makes me think and analyse. Two things I love to do.

  • It made me see the world in a slightly new perspective.

  • Playing this made me feel very good. (Even if that is not the purpose of the game.)

Detroit: Become Human

Have you ever watched a TV series and thought to yourself, man, this character is dumb. Why would they go in there? Why would they do that? It is so stupid. For me, it happens more often than I would care to experience. But now, YOU can be in charge of your own TV series. That’s right, you can make the characters do dumb things and then know that you made them do it. Much more satisfying lol. So much power.

That is only half a joke, because that is what this game is. It is essentially a high budget TV production where you have some sprinkled ‘game-play’. Nothing wrong with that. In fact, I quite enjoyed the ride and if you don’t want to read past this point, just know that if you want to experience a fascinating setting with a compelling narrative then this game is for you.

So, most of the reviews I see are pretty positive or negative, but not super descriptive? And it really doesn’t do it justice, because this game… Well, it has a lot to say but also nothing at all. I want to preface with that I actually really enjoyed the game. I liked most of the characters, I like that there are so many branching paths in every scene, I LOVED the graphics, and I did actually like the gameplay. Overall, I don’t think you’ll be wasting money if you decide to purchase. It has a high replayability as well, which is just a lot of value.

## My Child Lebensborn

Ok, I love story-driven games. I love historical games. I love resource/time management games. I love gritty, realistic games. But WHAT was is the point of this? Most of the time, there was nothing I could do for Klaus. It was incredibly frustrating to just listen about teachers and other kids bullying him, and all I could do was tell Klaus to shut up and take it. I couldn't confront any of the perpetrators or do anything to change the events.

Halfway through, I thought, "ok, so maybe it's not about confronting issues, but rather it's about how he responds to things he can't change…and the point is to develop his character traits so that he'll eventually turn out as a resilient adult."

### Ich liebe dich, mein Kleiner

This game…tugged at my heartstrings. Before playing it, I was watching Michaela Laws play it up to a certain point. Even then...my heart hurt and I kept crying when Karin was sad or upset and putting herself down. I purchased this game yesterday and could not help but play it for at least 3 hours as I did not want to spoil anything for myself; I wanted to experience in my own time. I took in Klaus and he was an absolutely wonderful child. As before...my heart near broke everytime he was distraught or sad. There were moments where I have gotten angry, worried sick...at one point I think I even felt depersonalization despite it being a game. It just felt that powerful. I wanted to do more. Despite all the horrible things that have happened, seeing Klaus smile and be happy made it all worth it. I wanted to hug him so badly as I sympathize with what he went through...being bullied...feeling alone.

This game has so many layers to it… the plot twists... the stakes riding on your decisions! I am in awe. I went through so many ""bad"" endings to get to the 'true' good ending but having to work for that ending made it so much more satisfying. Not to mention that the ""bad"" endings still had brilliant content, and I enjoyed playing each time as there are so many different decisions to make. And so many people to woo.... *heart eyes*

Feminist brain: This is an excellent use of the visual novel format with amazingly complex worldbuilding, distinctive characters who are easy to love (or hate, as the case may be), and while the dream-dropping doesn't seem to be integrated into the game so far it's an interesting concept I'd like to see. All in all, I'm very much looking forward to the finished product.

Queer brain: hehe purdy ladies

## DEKONSTRUKT

DEKONSTRUKT is an interactive movie, with elements of first-person gameplay. You will be immersed in the inglorious story of a game developer with plenty of destructive black humor. The game responds to never-before-seen creative challenges. Help the protagonist deal with his inner demons. Or not really.

As you can see, the game tries with all its might to seem like it's not just another triviality. In other words, my mother grew a vegetable, even though she is not a gardener.

✔ A story that will stay in your memory for a long time.

## Space to Grow

Honestly I felt the game went for quantity over quality with the concepts and characters. I'd pay 4.99 on this, but I regret spending 9.99\. The initial game "Our Personal Space" was very adorable and I thought about the game well after I stopped playing, which is why I caved and bought this. It's obvious a lot of effort and care was put into this game, but i think if it would of taken longer and the team gave more time to the development, it would of been a much more well rounded, in-depth game.

### Overview

Full disclosure: **I am married to one of this game's developers!** That said, here is my honest review.

I feel that this game fills a really excellent niche that I haven't seen much elsewhere. It delivers a mix of visual novel, simulation, and choose-your-own-adventure elements, and provides a fun what-if romp filled with parenting decisions, space colonization struggles, farm management tradeoffs. I'll go over some of the main elements below.

### Overall

We'll start with the overview, then get into the details further on down.
