To The Rescue!

To The Rescue!

TLDR: I’ve quite enjoyed this game so far, worth the thumbs up, but there is room for improvement. Give it a go if you’re a fan of organization and multi-tasking, but be mindful that eventually at some point, sooner or later, the challenge fades away. The game lacks consequences.

Strap in lads this is gonna be a long one.

This is my first review of any game ever, nearly 50 hrs deep, I feel pretty divided on this game. I really have enjoyed it and I can’t wait to see where the developers will take the game from here. Yes there are bugs, but I do want to say you guys have been so prompt with updates and fixes, what felt like after the weekend the majority of bugs I was experiencing had been completely fixed. We went from nearly unplayable because the game simply ceased to function whenever I spoke to anyone to the worst, but probably funniest, being today helplessly dragged along with the newly adopted puppy by a old woman out into the carpark. Understandably bug fixes and crashes come first, but in the long run will there be any major changes to the game play itself? Or will it remain as is? Either way Devs you guys are amazing and keep up the great work!

My save file shows a time of 6:37 and steam 14.2 - and I feel like I have no reason to play anymore. I really wanted to love this game but it’s just too..aimless? short?

I was completely addicted to it during the demo, where the limit was 5 in game days! Don’t get me wrong, despite everything, I enjoyed playing the game. But at present I’d only recommend it at a larger discount unless you’re happy to play endlessly without any real goal.

I’m a really goal orientated person when it comes to games like this - if I don’t have a story-based task, or I’m not trying to unlock something useful, if there aren’t any meaningful objectives/level progression then I lose interest. There’s no difficulty increase or anything like that, if anything the game only gets drastically easier. The Mayor stops coming by after you complete her tutorial-esque tasks and apparently comes back at week 9 with an evaluation report. I’m on week 5, and I’m kind of too bored of the game to worry about seeing said report - I stopped playing.

A Summer with the Shiba Inu

A Summer with the Shiba Inu

Disclaimer: I helped edit A Summer with the Shiba Inu, so my review will not comment on its writing or editing. However, all other aspects are fair game. XD

A Summer with the Shiba Inu is a visual novel in which dogs are the intelligent beings in the world. Yup, that’s right. There are no humans around. We take on the role of Syd, a Shiba Inu who had been living in Canine-da and has only recently returned to Shiba Inu island. The reason she has returned is to find her brother Chun-wen and to learn what has happened to him. However, upon immediately returning to the island, Syd is almost immediately approached by Quei-li, the only Labrador on the island full of Shiba Inus, and Quei-li offers her help to search for Chun-wen. Of course, Syd is suspicious but ultimately decides to accept her help. During this journey to find her brother, Syd is accosted by a few dogs, those who want to “rechallenge” her for the right to the Feather of Truth. (Oh, did I forget to mention it? Syd had run away from Shiba Inu island after having won the Feather of Truth, having defeated many dogs in many ARInas, which are virtual reality arenas where dogs fight to earn their ranking and place on Shiba Inu island.) What will happen to Syd? Will she find her brother? Will she lose in one of these rechallenges? And what is the deal with Quei-li? I’ll end my story synopsis here, as to avoid spoiling the story.

Shiba Inus meet Sword Arts Online

What I really liked is that “A Summer with the Shiba Inu” is an actual Visual novel with about 70,000 words. Despite its length, the story is smart, interesting and kept my attention to the end. The writing is not overly complicated, so even if your primary language is not English, it will be easy to follow along.

I could tell that a lot of love went into little details like sounds, shakes and various special effects to make this Visual Novel feel alive (there is quite a lot of action) and its obvious to me that production was not just rushed and received a lot of care in the making.

Dance of Death: Du Lac & Fey

Dance of Death: Du Lac & Fey

First of all, it’s fair to say that I bought and started the game a few weeks after main launch, so all the critical patches and fixes were already implemented. Played it through twice and encountered no bugs or glitches both times, except for one where the game crashes right before rolling credits, apparently only happening on W7 64 bit… Eh, nothing game-breaking. Later updates also added more interactive points and SEVERAL additional achievements, so I would say by now it’s pretty polished.

I now arrived at about the middle of the game and I will certainly recommend it, but…

It is a game which enchants you by its really interesting and unusual setting and a great art style. I can think of no other game (point and click adventure - like ) where you play such a stylish hero or rather pair of heroes. The dynamics between the human character and his animal compagnion is original and fun. The dog Fey talks to animals and uses her nose while du Lac interacts with humans and you can change between them almost any time, this is cool. Although -at least until now- this dynmaics is not living up to its potential.

The Unlikely Legend of Rusty Pup

The Unlikely Legend of Rusty Pup

So far it’s all pretty surreal and amazing, on top of a solid gameplay foundation. As someone who built a fansite for (among other things) the Mario vs Donkey Kong games, this game is like a dream come true :)

Rusty wakes down a storm drain during an air raid and seems to be caught up in a conflict between two talking voices, one of which follows Rusty around and narrates, the other which interacts with Rusty via various giant eyeballs scattered around. New areas are gated off via giant vault doors guarded by eyebots, which will only let you pass if you’ve collected and stored a requisite number of these odd cubes of brainmatter you can find lying around in jars, and which must be cached via flushing them down equally scattered around toilets. The world map offers some limited fast travel, but serves more as an indicator of which area has brains left to collect and how many brains are needed to unlock new areas. It’s a bit like Kirby & the Amazing Mirror, in that it’s got Metroidvania “unlock new stuff and backtrack” elements, but is split up into individual “levels”, with fast travel points every couple of levels.

After putting in +10 hours and reaching roughly half-way completion, I can confidently say this is what a puzzle game should be. A polished, challenging thinking game that gives you a proper sense of pride and accomplishment, without hand-holding, grinding exp, currencies, all that bosh. And a lovely aesthetic and charm to top it all off.

You must hold, drag and drop objects to guide Rusty Pup—your adorable protagonist—through many detailed and dangerous steampunk environments, collecting Brains and flushing them down a toilet to progress to new levels. Everything can be done with one hand, which along with the slow pace, makes it very relaxing to play. New mechanics and narration is drip-fed to you as you progress and gain more understanding of Rusty Pup’s world, which is brought to life through brilliant 2D visuals and eerie sound design.

Best Friend Forever

Best Friend Forever

Note: I updated this review after completing the game.

The Good:

This goes without saying but the dogs in this game are just so lovely. Best Friend Forever does a great job of combining the dating sim/visual novel elements with caring and training your dog. Having them be on screen at all times for you to interact with while out and about in the city is one of the standout features in the game, and makes me very thankful to be playing on a touchscreen laptop as the patting mini-feature translates really well to touchscreen input. The art for the dogs and the date options are a lovely soft 2D style. And the cast of characters includes tonnes of diversity, so hopefully there will be a love interest for everyone.

Best Friend Forever is a cute, relaxing game that I really liked, but it has some issues that make me a bit hesitant to recommend it.

Let’s start with the positives. Best Friend Forever is a super cute, wholesome game that I can genuinely say I enjoyed playing. The art is delightful; each one of the dogs is absolutely lovable, and the human characters all have personality and appeal. The backgrounds are very well-done, though at one point I did find myself wishing there were more variants. Overall, though, it’s a treat for the eyes. I didn’t even mind the loading screens because they were just that cute. It’s very pretty, you get the point.

Pugmire: Treasure of the Sea Dogs

Pugmire: Treasure of the Sea Dogs

Good story that reminded me of the kind I grew up with when I was a child. Its a cute adventure story, with just enough realism and consequences to make it enjoyable.

“Whose a good dog? Your a good dog arn’t you? Yes you are!”

-would happily be a good dog again!

It’s not what I expected. There is no game-play, you are just reading and selecting answers the whole time. It is not entertaining. It just feels like I’m taking a test.

Purrfect Apawcalypse: Love at Furst Bite

Purrfect Apawcalypse: Love at Furst Bite

Purrfect Apawcalypse Love at Furst Bite (palfb) is a short visual novel which focuses mostly on the interactions between the characters.

The game isn’t very long but worth the five bucks or the equivalent amount of other currency.

While the writing isn’t the strongest its fairly decent and kept me entertained during my playthrough.

The interactions between the characters are both cute and sometimes horrifying and at times made me cringe because of what was happening on the screen.

The cute artstyle is one of the games strongest points and while it may not be to everyones tastes it fits the game well, making the games deathscenes (and there’s a lot of them) more shocking.

Going to go right out of the gate and say that this is definitely not your standard kind of game, and if you can’t handle gore - even if it’s cartoonish - then you shouldn’t play the game out of respect for your eyes. However, if you can handle that…

Welcome to Purrfect Apawcalypse! We have:

  • clifford the nonbinary dog

  • suicidal maniac who’s also funny as shit

  • TAKE OFF THE SHIRT

  • bitch who died on a fucking toilet seat (very important, not ironic)

  • witch who will probably step on you (and not apologize (trust me it’s cool ok))
