Chessformer

Chessformer

Chessformer is a grid-based puzzle platformer with Chess pieces. Each of the pieces moves as expected, but they fall down after moving and can’t move again until they stop falling. Pieces also stack on top of each other which is key to solving most levels. The goal in each level is to capture the opposing king, who is lazy and never moves, so don’t worry about losing any pieces.

The Steps as we know them

The Steps As We Know Them is a nice restricted-movement path-finding puzzle game using some movements as per usual of chess pieces. While it uses the chess pieces and in some ways imitate the standard moving patterns of the pieces, the actual game has very little to do with chess. The game could be given a completely different skin and would still make perfect sense without the chess pieces.

all I know about chess is how each piece moves, and it’s more than enough for the steps as we know them. in fact, you can go in completely blind, as the game will tell you all the relevant rules as they come up.

6 worlds are laid out like chess boards connected with colored areas serving as separate puzzles. each world features a different chess piece, though their movement doesn’t immediately or always match the real thing. for example, the bishop moves like a pawn until it steps on a special purple tile that unleashes its signature diagonal move.

Pretty easy, only got stuck on level 23. Dig the concept, hard to say whether this will improve my chess game until I play.

Chess Brain

Chess Brain

This game has interested chess related puzzles. To see everything moving and trying to figure out next move is challenging. Sometimes it melts your brain making calculations for every move, and because of that, I love this game.

I really wanted to see a sequel for this game. :)

Short chess puzzle game about finding the right path through a board without encountering an enemy piece. Good. Level reset and you can redraw your path as many times as you need to.

ChessCraft

ChessCraft

Never play the same game of chess again! ChessCraft is a chess AI sandbox. Create your own chess boards, rules, and pieces. Play against the computer or your friends online, or win loot by playing one of 80 built-in chess boards in adventure mode.

Many chess games already exist, but only ChessCraft allows the player to create such wacky boards, pieces, and rules and immediately play a decent computer opponent.

Create new pieces with any combination of the 8 bishop or rook slides, plus a 7x7 grid of knight-like hops. Create new boards with any enabled or disabled tile up to 16x16. Place promotion rules for any piece, anywhere, or other special tile rules. Create pieces that cannot be captured, or with ranged attacks, or pieces that restrict other pieces from acting. The computer opponent then uses concepts from computer science and graph theory to understand your creations and play against you.

No single player mode of any kind.

No players in the multiplayer que during prime time hours (2 days in a row).

Waited 4 hours a day on two different days and didn’t see a single other person logged into the game to even attempt playing against.

Also the menu interface is horrible and the in-game purchases are overpriced cosmetics for things like ugly background images.

Unlock The King

Unlock The King

Shuffle chess pieces to clear a path for its titular centerpiece in Unlock the King. While its 100 stages aren’t of consistent quality, the sheer quantity offered for its minimum price point make it an easy shoe-in for brain teaser fans.

Similar to its developer’s other works, UTK is about making way for its central figure. Apart from pawns, every piece makes an appearance here, differing primarily in quantity and stage geometry to keep you invested. It’s a simple formula that’s guaranteed to work, though it is admittedly repetitive. Bread-and-butter chess boards make way for switches in its late half, transforming the playing field and opening up new possibilities.

Imagine it’s Black Friday, and you’ve made the misguided decision to take advantage of some deal you are convinced is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity (if only because you went and got trampled). When the clock strikes midnight and myriads of strangers produce an assortment of cutting utensils—some legal and some not so legal—you realize you goofed, and it’s time to abort. You shove strangers, dodge descending blades, leap over toppled grandmas, and shimmy through paths so narrow they would make a spelunker fill their adult diaper. You now understand the gameplay concept of Unlock the King.
