Cyber Defense

Cyber Defense

Changing my review back to positive, as the developer fixed the issue. A lot of levels were unattainable, now they are.

So anyway, basic tower defense game, with some pros and some cons.

The biggest pro is that it works, far too many tower defense games on Steam are broken or incomplete. This one seems to be pretty solid.

The look is also a positive for me, though it will not be to everyone’s tastes. It resembles the old vectrex games, for those who remember that.

The game has an interesting but limited array of foes. According to the developer, the spawner tailors the kind of attackers it generates to counter your defenses, and it does seem to have some effect.

I left negative reviews in the past because the game originally had quite a few bugs and issues.

But, the developer continues to release patches and address issues that are discovered.

It’s a fun tower defense game, I enjoy it quite a bit for the price.

Hope to see more features and maps come in the future, or for the game to be open for community mods and maps.

Wish it had a tutorial. I wish there was an indicator for unit range or damage range. Some of the ui is hard to read. Solid concept though. I really enjoy how there is no real set “path”, but rather it’s adaptable.

SENTRY

SENTRY

The last remaining ships make their break for survival. As a SENTRY, you must protect the precious human cargo as they are ferried out of system. Can your increasingly damaged vessel withstand the alien horde and reach the safety of the jump locations? Humanity depends on it.

Build traps and turrets to slow the advance of the alien menace. Only by taking the fight directly to the enemy in fast-paced FPS gunplay can you hope to drive the invaders back. Utilise hard-won upgrades to turn the tide in your favour.

Your ship will come under constant attack from multiple directions. Choose where to make your stand and go on the offensive by re-capturing lost sections.

Faced with overwhelming odds, use environmental destruction to survive - shooting out windows to vent sections into space, slamming blast doors to delay the enemy – but be mindful that these decisions may make future conflicts tougher. While your vessel may leave Earth in pristine condition, the persistent damage means it’ll soon bear many battle-scars.

SENTRY features a singleplayer campaign with the option to have online friends fighting alongside you in co-op.

We’re very early in development, so we’ll update this page with detail, images and features as we go – Wishlist the game to be kept up to date!

Updated Review

After more than 6,000 hours in this game the day has come to quit Dungeon Defenders. Easy to imagine that I’ve given a recommendation before. Unfortunately recent updates made by the Community Development Team (CDT) ruined the game - at least for me.

To my knowledge the CDT has been introduced to fix bugs, adding quality-of-life changes such as new content. Instead they also change core mechanics of the game such as RNG, towers and enemies. Things we were used for long 5 years are getting changed out of the sudden because certain individuals within the CDT are enforcing their changes more or less.

This game, despite being old, as stood the test of time. It’s a wonderful game from my childhood that still fun to play whenever I jump back onto it. It’s never a dull moment in this game, and will always hold a place in my hearts. That doesn’t mean I don’t know the bad stuff about it, because loving a game doesn’t mean you see only the good parts, but you know what the flaws are and you either love them or are able to look past them. Lets go naming some shall we?

Pros:

The combination of RPG elements with Tower defence is smooth and feels natural.

Alright, this is going to be a lengthy review, but I feel like this is needed. As you might have guess from my amount of play time, I’m recommending this game and find it to be a very good game. However, more context is needed. I’m reviewing the game in its current stat (January 2021).

Let’s start up with the most important thing: my recommendation varies depending on who you are. If you’re the kind of gamer that likes playing through the game’s story once and then move on to the next game, then you’ll probably like this game in its current state. The first campaign playthrough is really enjoyable and, for the most part, well designed and well balanced. Boss might be a bit hard though, but I’m sure the devs will rebalance them. Either way, it’s not so terrible.

TLDR: I recommend the game, it is fun, colorful and easy to jump into. Also, if you played DD1 you will get hit with a wave of nostalgia. However this statement from their Kickstarter page “Here at Chromatic Games, we all agree — let’s go back to the roots of what made the original Dungeon Defenders so amazing!”. They have not hit this mark, not even close yet. Additional info below.

I would recommend Dungeon Defenders: Awakened to anyone looking for a fun, simple (more on this later), highly addicting game. The game has enough for casual experiences and a bit of depth for the hardcore min/maxer in us all. Fighting waves and waves of enemies to get showered in loot is a lot of fun and never gets old. .

Heroes Must Diee

You have been living a peaceful life in a small village but once every fortnight these so called “Heroes” come into the village and un-apologetically break in houses and take what does not belong to them. Tired of this rampant menace you have decided to stop it and regain the peaceful life you so yearn. Build traps in and around your house or maybe buy some land on the outskirts of town to keep bloodshed away. Craft weapons, potions, bombs to be launched at the enemy. Resource manage whatever you have and help your fellow villagers buy buying resources from them from the gold of the fallen “Heroes”.

  • Turn your humble abode into a full-on Dungeon that make the Heroes suck their thumb and wet their pants.

  • Craft an elaborate Dungeon, place traps and ruses for Heroes will different skill set and attributes. Some maybe be heavy and strong, some may be intelligent and fast.

  • Fight off bigger and smarter waves of Hero bands that come to take your loot.

  • Learn about the incoming Hero’s weaknesses as they are strong and may not be killed easily. Lure them into traps, some are claustrophobic, some are greedy, some have weak ankles.

  • Hire minions, monsters, and dragons as they have been tortured far too long and seek revenge.

  • Craft items, weapons, ammunitions, bombs to reload your traps and slay the Heroes.

  • Improve and upgrade traps, learn new technology because the enemy is learning too.

  • Improve your skills over time. Melee, Archery, Magic, Dark Magic are few skills to use directly against the enemy but also learn to Mine, Chop wood, Fish and Forage.

Starlight: Defence Command

Starlight: Defence Command

This is such an addictive tower defence game with some features I’ve never seen for this genre of game before. I was invited to be an alpha tester on this game. It’s got an 80’s Tron vibe for me, but with some epic music and sound effects. Very configurable towers, and more interest that a kind of repetitive TD app game, with proper missions rather than just the same level over and over.

One of my favourite aspects is that the levels have a kind of “fixed” duration (if you make it to the end of the level that is..) I like this because I’m one of those people who is motivated through my procrastination by playing games …okay I’ll just play Level 1 for 20 minutes…then laundry for 20 minutes…level 1 again…then something else I need to do in the real world. This really suits my preferred playing style for a game.

This is a more cerebral TD game in a genre that leans towards kuwaii aesthetics. Tower customization is probably the most detailed I have seen and it is pretty satisfying when you dial in an effective tower strategy. There is leveling up, so it is worth replaying early maps and it gives you a chance to try alternate methods. The story is interesting and told in text and can be ignored if you don’t care about it.

Developer responded to a minor issue I noticed within 24 hours. Definitely worth trying out if you like TD.

Dungeon Defenders II

Dungeon Defenders II

I tried. I really, really tried.

Ever since I bought this game in 2014, I continued to throw my time and genuine effort at it, hoping to get at the very least a decent sequel to DD1. I even ignored the very clear warning sign that was the release of DD Eternity (DD1 was abandoned to hackers, then repacked and…sold again under a new name, wham, bam, profit). Today, with the game about ready to leave yet another developement stage, instead of having hope and tons of fun playing the game, I am disgusted and bitterly dissapointed.

Don’t bother with Dungeon Defenders 2 or Trendy Entertainment. Their incessant greed has instilled levels of disgust in me that I scarcely could previously fathom.

For a bit of background, allow me to preface this by telling you that I hold no nostalgia for the original Dungeon Defenders. This is a combination of their lack of security leading to rampant hackers and my disdain for the original character styles. I played this game a bit when it first came out, and dropped in now and again to see how it was doing. My tenure here became permanent with the Terraria crossover content, and I’ve remained fairly steady to the game since. I’ve done some Mastery, climbed up Onslaught, and dabbled in Ancient Power Resets. I’ve seen a lot of what there is to see, and let me tell you, originally, the allure was the cartoony, bright graphics and enjoyable combat. However, beneath this veneer of vibrant paint lies a decrepit, hollow experience designed to consume your wallet.

McDROID

McDROID

A Tower Defense game, between average and good. Graphics are colourful, but need a powerfull hardware to run, even in low quality; when screen has plenty of action, can cause lags and crashes.

Mechanics is right; has only 5 towers to choose, but each has 4 possible upgrades. Also there is 5 kinds of powerfull items, with a crescent price by use. Towers and items must be unblocked by ingame progress. The economy is based in a mixed system of farming and gems, to buy towers, upgrades and items.

More Reviews @ TheVideogameBacklog.com

McDROID is one of the two most imaginative tower defense games I’ve played in a long time. It’s a timeless story about you (a puppy-like robot named McDROID) and your friend SHUTTLE crash-landing on the dying Planet M. You must plant and harvest strawberries as a form of currency to build and upgrade towers to fight off the corrupted creatures that have taken a stronghold on Planet M. This may really sound strange, but it’s also a truck load of fun!

Maintaining your calm, like John Spartan, is crazy essential to McDROID. If you don’t keep a clear head you’ll start forgetting to maintain your defenses so you can gather stuff or you’ll forget about gathering strawberries and have nothing to buy towers with. Things can go from good to “Oh sweet mother! Where did all THAT come from!?!” fairly quickly. That’s part of the strategy/challenge though.
