Grey Skies: A War of the Worlds Story

Grey Skies: A War of the Worlds Story

I absolutely love War of the Worlds and anything that involves it.

But if you take the element of the novel and story out, unfortunately the game itself is mediocre at best. The game’s pretty to look at and the dev did a good job of making me feel like I was in England. But the mechanics are generic and the stealth was tedious. Enemies were bland, the crafting system wasn’t all that useful and the characters were next to non existent. I felt frustrated how there was so much stealth revolving avoiding what was basically Human zombies and far too little gameplay against surviving the actual Martians. Speaking of which, we don’t even get to see the Martians! We don’t see how they landed, when they landed and where the invasion began. We go through a drawn out string of avoiding people to get a tiny bit of Fighting Machine activity at the very end.

𝗗𝗢 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗕𝗨𝗬 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗚𝗔𝗠𝗘!!! Grey Skies is absolutely miserable, it is a combination of boredom and frustration. Grey Skies is a cheap, buggy and janky mess of a game.

There are a plethora of bugs that are down right annoying to deal with. The gameplay is extremely tedious and slow. Most of the time you’ll be running around a dull map looking for random crafting parts, that don’t really make sense (such as finding a red weed to make a glass of water). There are moments where you are forced to slowly walk down an empty, linear path for a few minutes straight, doing absolutely nothing. The music that starts in these walking sections ends before it is even finished, so you’ll be walking in silence for the last minute of the section. Also, the main mechanic in the game is throwing cups of water at generators.

Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories

Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories

So what can I say about this game? Well, it’s definitely not what I was expecting. I’m a first time player of the series, so this was all brand new to me. I will list all the good and bad things about the game and then let you decide if you want to try it out or not.

The Ugly:

Here’s where some backstory is needed. The game was originally set to release in 2011, but got canceled due to the tsunami that hit Japan at the time. The person in charge of the project left the original company that had been working on the game and for a long time tried to get the rights to the game. Eventually, Kazuma Kujo’s patience paid off and Grandzella (the name of the new gaming company he founded) was able to pick up from where the original company left off (which had pretty much completed it. )

Now, I’m gonna be honest. When I first got this game I didn’t really care one way or the other about it, as it was given to me by a friend. I tried it mainly just to make them happy by trying it out. After playing it for a little while, I realized that I liked it and I kept going through it. I suppose my liking disaster related movies had some part to do with it, but I think it was more the realism of what could happen in a disaster that drew me in. Now, for the realism there’s also the comical parts and the 4th wall breaking parts which was more intended to advertise some hints about the game itself and why it was delayed for so long. The graphics are definitely something you’d expect from a low budget game, because hey, it was…is it worth the same price as a AAA game? Not quite, considering that they only doubled the price for the localized version. There’s a few glitches in the game too, missing faces or entire bodies, and sometimes some clipping where bodies are in the ground, at least until they can get all that patched up for us and caught up to the Japanese version. These don’t really impact the game itself, more just funny. There was one glitch I did notice however, that CAN break the game, and that’s when you get to day 5. If you want to get someone with you

! like Yayoi, who gets sexually assaulted as you try to rescue her in the jewelry story do not save your progress after the starting sequence and quit to do it some other time. If you reload the game after that sequence has started, then you may find your way barred and you cannot progress the game. There’s also the chance of the game crashing for some people, mostly those with AMD graphics cards. It happened to me once per play-through, but I did some looking and some have it worse. On the other hand, you get to collect a lot of outfits and compasses and backpacks….but the only thing that carries over to the next play-through or alternate saves is the compasses…and while there are a lot of different outfits, the females tend to get way way more options which I think that isn’t quite fair for those who want male characters. I think some of what they could do to improve upon the game is to allow people to collect the outfits they want and have them carry over into the next play-through so they don’t have to search for them again. You get to customize your characters some but it is more limited. They didn’t change it as much as they did the previous games, left it all with Asian characters, but I think they should have added a few more options for foreign tourists who could have been visiting the city. So to sum it all up, the game is enjoyable, teaches you what can happen in a disaster like this and how you can avoid the worst of some of those situations while also showing that some things you can do nothing about. If you’re interested in the game, try the demo first before buying to see if its really a right fit for you.

Gatewalkers (Alpha)

Gatewalkers (Alpha)

It’s ALPHA but let me just say one thing, It sure doesn’t play like an ALPHA!

I jumped in the game first thing when the demo came live. I played for 9 hours straight in stream on twitch.tv and you can go check it out. No shameful plug at all. It’s there, go watch it. Anyway, if you want a top down RPG with some amazing mechanics and great elements of game that take you back to some old school classics with modern graphic engine and some amazing snub references to things that seem very familiar this is one for sure to check out.

Pros.

If you are looking for a dungeon crawler type game i highly recommend. This is an actual great game! Great Graphics, awesome gameplay/controls, and even this being in alpha even i personally have not had any bugs or glitches with it. It is similar to diablo with the combat and dungeon crawler game play but with a super cool twist; (if you have ever played albion online) it also shares similar traits to albion with the open world type maps but are not nearly as big and they are procedurally generated so you get something a little different if you go back to the same map. There is also mats for crafting tons of different types of weapons and armor for the build that your running (similar to albion on the weapons; so your skills you use are dependent upon what weapon your using). In that same statement it IS NOT nearly as grindy as albion was with farming mats and not to mention the constant annoyance of other people farming the same mats as you and waiting for them to respawn since it is a singleplayer/co op game. The UI is pretty nice and simple not super complex or fancy. The skill tree is a shtting of the pants moment at first sight so it takes a second but it is easy to understand. There is herbs, berries, etc types of ingredients that you use in crafting various foods and drinks which can give you buffs like, increased healing, damage, damage reduction, stamina regen etc. There is hidden chests and challenges that you can do in the maps which gives you more rare materials. And there is even effects from the world on your character on certain maps like them being filled with gas in areas to even being night time which affects you in different ways.

Gatewalkers

Gatewalkers

Gatewalkers is a cooperative action RPG game with survival elements, where players travel across different worlds in order to save their own. Explore procedurally generated worlds, face hostile inhabitants, face challenges like extreme weather conditions, toxic atmosphere, lack of water and more.

Key features:

TEAM CO-OP

As a Gatewalker, one of the chosen few, you can go through the Gate and explore the worlds that lay on the other side. Team up with up to 3 other players in this team-based survival. Fight terrifying monsters, survive extreme weather conditions, follow the orders given by the Guild, and most importantly, stay alive!

WORLD EXPLORATION

Explore the procedurally generated worlds with unique terrain features, plants, and creatures. Discover new resources and crafting materials. Face various environmental hazards: toxic or unbreathable atmosphere, terrifying darkness, penetrating cold, and much more. Each world type introduces a unique survival mechanic that forces you to adapt. Finding food, water or wood to start a fire may be impossible. Consider carefully what to bring with you on the expedition, as no one really knows what awaits on the other side of the Gate.

TEAM SURVIVAL

Surviving alone in an unknown world is really hard. But with teammates at your side, you at least stand a chance. Share the responsibilities: start a fire to let others warm up, build a tent to let your mates rest, warn them about the dangers lurking in the night. The key to surviving is cooperation between you and your team.

SKILL BASED COMBAT

Isometric skill-based combat without auto targeting. Your skills may miss, and you can dodge enemy attacks! Good positioning during combat, balanced use of skills, proper timing and team synergy are all crucial to victory.

CRAFTING

Choose an item to craft. Discover the appropriate recipe. Raid different worlds to gather required resources. Find or create a crafting station. Finally, build the item and use it!

YOU ARE WHAT YOU WEAR

There are no predefined character classes. Each item gives you a unique set of skills, so try tinkering with different builds. Take heavy armor and a healing staff to support your mates in the front line by tanking and restoring health. Remember, you are, what you wear!

PROCEDURALLY GENERATED WORLDS

Each time you pass the Gate you will land in a different, procedurally generated world. This gives you countless opportunities, offers constant challenges, and forces you to adapt in order to win in changing conditions! Always stay cautious, modify your strategy, make fast decisions and face their consequences, because you never know what waits around the corner.

Isles of Pangaea

Isles of Pangaea

Pretty unique little dinosaur simulator as it has some choices not usually found in dinosaur sims.

Isles of Pangaea has dinosaurs such as dimetrodon, sarcosuchos, archelon, and compsognathus…yup, that’s right, the tiny lizards from Jurassic Park: Lost World…few dino games offer this dinosaur to play with.

In fact, you start off the game with a choice of either Compsognathus or Pteranodon…or Archelon or Oviraptor…and you earn evolution points by eating (DO YOU GET POINTS BY KILLING)…

I have tried the other dinosaur games i have found on steam. Such as Saurian and prehistoric survivors. i don’t play multiplayer so i don’t know what those games are like. But if you want a single player dino game then get this one. Aquatic and flying dinosaurs are playable and you can be a stegosauras that alone is worth my money

Urban Strife

Urban Strife

Can you push back against fate, live among ruthless gangs and fight back the zombie horde, with just a handful of ragtag militias to help you?

Enjoy an unique blend of old school turn-based strategy, post-apoc survival mechanics and a thrilling RPG storyline. With all the benefits of the modern Unreal Engine, real bullet ballistics, day/night cycle, fire with dynamic material consumption and spread, advanced sound propagation mechanics, AI NPCs with independent lives and faction based morals and, hunger, thirst, wounds and sickness and last but not least, advanced modding support.

Starting as an amnesic survivor, rescued half dead by the kind people of Urban city shelter, somewhere in backwater south of USA, you need to raise up and become a true leader, rebuild the pillaged camp and bring hope back in the hearts of the survivors. Then venture out to negotiate alliances with ruthless factions or go to war against them. And finally, bet everything you have and know to survive an impending return of the massive zombie horde that almost ended civilization just two years before.

REAL BALLISTICS

USG brings you the common weapon classes that you can expect to find in the context of the story, somewhere in a southern US city: handguns, shotguns, hunting, assault and sniper rifles. Each of these classes has special pros and cons that make them special in specific situations. Handguns and shotguns for example excel in CQB with excellent damage. While pistols do cumulative damage due to their low AP costs, shotguns have individual pellet damage adding up and a cone of fire!

BODY PARTS TARGETING

Assault rifles bring tremendous cumulative damage too, when used in burst mode, with frightening multi-body penetration. Provide you can come by such expensive ammo and afford to waste it. And finally the option to aim for specific body parts for either instant kills or crippling shots make hunting and sniper rifles true long-range exterminators. How much fun they are depends just on which side of the barrel you are.

MELEE ATTACK MODES

The ranged arsenal is complemented by a wide array of stuff that can be used to smash, slash and punch - basically almost anything that can be wielded as a melee weapon in USG is a melee weapon. The melee combat is based on stamina management - the more tired you get, the less you will be able to dodge hits. And comes with its own array for special moves, for certain popular weapons

RPG

Once you will start exploring, you’ll find a world populated with living, busy NPCs, with their own life and convictions. Among these you’re to find those willing to help you - provided you help them first. And as long as you serve their interests. Because in Urban everyone has an agenda.

Three main factions are fighting for control through numerous proxy groups in the town. Army rebels, a zombie loving cult and a ruthless gang of bikers. You’re free to choose one of them as ally. But be aware - no path will be easy or morally justified - an apocalypse comes with a dire lack of innocence. It is all about survival. And being able to live with your choices.

SURVIVAL MECHANICS

You will find the Urban Shelter dilapidated and in ruins, full of refugees on the brink of despair, locked down by vicious looters and roaming zombies. You need to regain control of the neighborhood fast. Start rebuilding and expanding. You have to scavenge resources and show the locals you’re the hero they waited for. Then start repairing and upgrading the shelter, hiring the residents as specialists and using the refugees as labor. Depending on the allies you make you will be able to unlock unique upgrades that will make shelter administration more and more rewarding.

OLD-SCHOOL TBS (with a twist)

Urban Strife uses a classic Action Points system (Jagged Alliance 2 style), with consecutive turns & interrupts based on skills. But we’ve also tried to avoid the pitfalls of turn-based combat, especially against large numbers of foes. And zombies come first in this list of enemies everyone hates to wait for in TBS, because they are both numerous and slow. Hence we introduced a special turn for the horde, with simultaneous movement for all undead, while still letting each AI take individual decisions.
