Super Army of Tentacles 3: The Search for Army of Tentacles 2

Super Army of Tentacles 3: The Search for Army of Tentacles 2

This game plays a lot like a choose your own adventure visual novel. It has a lot of various places to explore and a multitude of quests to play through besides the main quest line. The combat in the game is either wordplay based or trivia based (much of it being US history).

I really enjoyed my playthrough of the game and will likely replay. Even though I’ve played thru it once, there still were many side quests I could go back in another playthrough to do and various options to drive the story other ways. The humour in the game was a plus for me too.

It’s 2017 and the Apocalypse is years ahead of schedule and the gods have disappeared. You, a Deep One, have awoken from the Dreamland and must find the Necronomicon before Nyarlathotep, The Crawling Chaos and his 7 gods does and restore things to how they were or bring in a new age.

Alright, so SAT3: TST2 is the third VN in the series and it’s not nearly as cool as I made it sound in the paragraph above. This VN is, at its core, pure insanity and chaos. It’s a Lovecraftian adventure where you fight monsters by answering trivia questions (Brush up on your Shakespeare.) and fly around on a floating ship/city while “fighting” Microsoft paint horror monsters and creatures. One moment you’re in Antarctica making friends with a… yeti girl with pointy teeth (?) and the next you’re challenging Alexander Hamilton to a rap battle and signing the declaration of Independence. (Reminder: It’s 2017.)

I was able to beat the game in under 6 hours, but this game will most likely scratch your Megaman itch. However it isn’t a strait up clone

! as bosses don’t give you the weapons, some levels have many multiple paths, oh and no dash which I liked because it changed the pace of the game in a good way.

[+] done well, [~] quirky opinion, [-] poor

GAMEPLAY

[+] Some of the levels have different layouts than strait up linear.

[+] One thing that is done well is that weapons actually have use cases when fighting certain enemies.

As of this review, I am at the near the end of the New Game+ mode; and like the dev says, these are surprises here and there in it (as if the regular mode didn’t suprise me enough with all the interesting stuff going on, haha!)

I followed this game a bit during it’s development, and it’s now no mystery why some segments of the game took time, let me just say that.

After reading American Beetle’s review (it’s strange, I seem to often see a review from this Kaiju Hero; possibly a lover of indies and the Big Battel rpg game, hehe) I have to say, it solidified my interest in the game, and I purchased soon after reading it. How couldn’t I? Character editor of a C Class humadroid; this is like a dream come true for jump ‘n shoot robot fans, hehe.

Pharaonic

Pharaonic

Pros / What’s good?

–————————————–

The Egyptian theme is an eye-pleasing hook, and consistent throughout most of the game. The Serket armor set looks like something from monster hunter and the Ishtar set has this silly blue-pink paint job going on.

Combat is challenging, tactical almost. To Some attacks cannot be blocked, only dodged. Some cannot be dodged, only blocked. These attacks have ‘colored trails’ on them: red is unblockable, blue is undodgeable. Parrying - I found it new that you could parry enemies blocking with their shield in order to get them to drop their guard.

Pharaonic is a game that has drawn many comparisons to the Dark Souls series with its action RPG features and the hacking and slashing. Honestly, I have not played one game of the Dark Souls series. I wanted to give Pharaonic, an indie game, a try because I was captivated by the art direction, the stunning environmental design, and the stunning background design. It is a side scrolling game with a steep learning curve, tough enemies, and a fantastic setting in Ancient Egypt.

The story of Pharaonic is set in Ancient Egypt and you play Dagi, a prisoner who tries to escape from prison to find out what happened to The Red Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt in the year 440. You get to escape with the assistance of a mysterious woman. This is where your journey truly begins, as you are almost fully naked and armed with a basic sword. The plot is not very deep, but the focus of the game is on combat. There are many enemies and the battles are very difficult. I died many times but was rarely frustrated. I quickly realized that getting killed was mainly my fault and it was a matter of understanding my strengths and weaknesses as well as understanding the strengths and weaknesses of my enemies. Your defense, like dodge roll, block, and parry, is just as important as your offense because taking a few too many hits will result in certain death.

In a sentence this game is about old-school RPG gameplay. There’s power gaming, story, and lots of replayability. You control 4 schmucks

! or just 1 and a wad of dirty slaver cashon a quest to slay the Swamp King and halt the creeping poison from consuming the world. There are many quests and moral dilemmas you will face as you rise to be the heros the world deserves, but history is never silent; are your swords, fists, and guns good enough to remain pure?

I highly recommend this game if you like J/RPGS. That being said, here’s some more details and greivances:

Aesthetics: Nostalgic!

This game’s sound design and appearance, right down to the layout of the battle screen, give it an 8-bit feel, reminiscent of the early Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior) games. The battle music is particularly good; it will get stuck in your head!

Narrative: Simple and Many

While the game has one overall objective of defeating the Swamp King, there’s no “main” plot line. There are many little side stories. Some of the quests present the player with moral choices; a couple of these really made me stop and think.
