Mass Effect™: Andromeda Deluxe Edition

Mass Effect™: Andromeda Deluxe Edition

=== Contains spoilers ===

I’ve put this off for awhile now since I was a die hard fan of the original trilogy. Hearing about all the changes in Andromeda from having only three powers to uncustomizable squadmates and tired faces had me leaving the Mass Effect franchise entirely.

But a sale came on and I was curious. Perhaps it was time I took Shepard down from the pedestal and tried something new. And that’s the sort of eyes you need when you play Andromeda. You can’t compare this to the trilogy or you’ll be disappointed. On its own though, it’s alright.

Aside from graphics, this game has problems.

[MAIN CHARACTER]

Ryder is boring, period. Not the characters, nor even the writers seem to give a damn about Ryder. You go through the option of choosing your history that ties into your class ala old ME systems. But never, at any point, is it mentioned/relevant to the game. At least old ME would have characters address you depending on your history (“Oh the hero of ____, I can’t imagine the hardship of _____”, etc.) and one ME even had it be relevant to a plot event via tech classes.

Solar Echoes: The Star Legation

Solar Echoes: The Star Legation

STORY

Soon after the alien races began to explore outside their own star systems, they discovered each other. Hostilities grew into skirmishes and eventually, wars. However, some still desired peace. We’ve been taught that the Interstellar Union was formed in the year 1,023 LN. And we’ve been told of the human, Trey Donovan, who led the peace legation to unite everyone across the stars.

Details beyond that are varied and embellished, but we do have records of Trey’s past. This man, now considered a legend, was no diplomat. He grew up in entirely human-centric surroundings and had never ventured beyond human territories. He was banished to an exile colony after a dishonorable discharge from the military. He received no training for the peace legation that he supposedly led. Trey’s only known redeeming quality was his leadership and success in bringing law to a planet overrun with criminals.

How did this man travel to alien worlds and speak before powerful leaders? How was this human able to convince those alien leaders to send a representative with him to join the Interstellar Union? How did he survive the dangerous journey through space among an alien crew, several which were technically still at war with each other? There are still many unanswered questions about Trey Donovan and his journey across the universe. What really happened aboard that starship?

Really fun, good workout

In this game, you wield two “plasma wraiths”, which are essentially lightsabers but with a few extra tricks up their sleeves. You face off against bots as well as 4 different types of drones. Different types of attacks must be countered in different ways: slash, double slash, charged slash, block, deflect, and dodge. You also collect energy that when fully charged allows you to launch a special attack.

The primary game mode is level based. Clear enough levels to unlock the next tier of difficulty, which involves more opponents, tougher opponents, and increased speeds. It took me quite a while just to unlock the third tier, so I can’t even imagine what the highest difficulty (there are 9) is like. Clearing levels also unlocks upgrades to your attacks and defenses. There is also an endurance game mode which continues until you lose.

Note: If you don’t like Diablo-like games please read the last paragraph of this review.

This is like a Diablo game but it is also unique in its way, it is a side scroller, shooter and you build a ship instead of an armored warrior. If you know Diablo-like games you already know this game too is all about loot, grinding and mindlessly destroying, highly addictive stuff. It starts with a story and you shoot various enemies such as spacecrafts, repair drones, bombardment towers, a mini boss enemy you occasionally fight called Apex, and a variety of bosses which are cleverly designed, while dodging projectiles in a bullet-hell like style and stuff, but, after collecting enough compartments to make a build, whether making it through relic items or set items (just like the set items in Diablo), dodging stops, and spamming various abilities and destroying everything in your path begins, and then you go on to grind loot to destroy them more efficiently. So yeah, you get the idea, it is a Diablo game.

Before I start, let me note that since the game is in early access I’m giving it a bit more leeway than usual, but my recommendation is already for the game in its current state.

I’d bought the game through an external website without realising it was in early access, so I was a little anxious to discover it later. I don’t have many good experiences with unfinished games. But I’m glad to report that, despite not being able to finish the full story and the game having some issues, I already got enough fun out of it to be worth the price.

The Falconeer

The Falconeer

Alright, here’s the dealio, I saw this game before it was released and was instantly enamored by open world flying and dog fighting mechanics (something I’ve dabbled in before and liked). I followed it very closely until it released and bought it almost immediately when it was available. At first I used a controller to play the game, unsure if keyboard and mouse worked (my preferred method), it was a bit wonky and the controls took some time to get used to. While the game says its not keyboard and mouse supported I play it keyboard and mouse anyway, my fingers are not suited for basic controller controls so when it can be keyboard and mouse that is my go to any and every time regardless if its made for it or not. Using my preferred control system does increase my enjoy-ability to play the game (because duh I can actually PLAY the game this way).

Above the clouds, freedom must be boundless… or not, as The Falconeer shows us. Our falcon makes it only just above the clouds. Most of the time we fly either very close to the ground or at cloud height, but not much higher. That makes sense, because it’s damn cold up there and the oxygen is a bit scarce.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall

Age of Wonders: Planetfall

This game is easily one of the best newer strategy games (i.e. 4X style game) currently available for single player in my opinion, period. I’ve had a lot of time to try several of these sorts of games that are considered the top games in the category lately. Civ, Total War games, Stellaris, Endless Legend, the list goes on, but I always come back to this one.

NOTE: Many of the reviews for this game were from when the game was released, since then they did a massive update that re-balanced the game and overhauled several mechanics. A lot of the comments in negative reviews were from a year+ ago using the old mechanics. This game is being actively improved / patched as of Oct 2020 from what I’ve seen and they’re still releasing an expansion.

As the game is now, I do not recommend it.

I played the entire series extensively, over 4.000 hours over all titles of the series, for me personally, they changed things that were good about the game, and kept things that were bad about it.

City Siege

The first thing that is really noticeable and changes the dynamic of sieges entirely, they removed gates from city walls, those were replaced by militias and defensive towers, however these militias don’t have mods, and you can’t aim the towers, so any other troop that attacks the city will be stronger.

DAEMON X MACHINA

DAEMON X MACHINA

Armored Core Lite.

This is the closest thing to Armored Core on PC, honestly. It feels and plays like watered and dumbed down Armored Core 4. It lacks customization from AC, but gameplay loop as well as presentation (aka being hired by various Corporations that fighting each other) is very close. Story is absolute cringe and not worth discussing nor following. I can point out some pros and cons to break down the game

Pros:

-Closest thing to Armored Core on PC

-Plays and feels almost as AC4

-Had people who developed AC in dev team

Real player with 43.8 hrs in game

I can highly recommend this game, it’s no armor core that’s for sure however the game does provided a lot of customization however most of it would be “locked” until you encounter that part for the mech or weapon type but overall the game is fun, story is excellent and characters are splendid I actually like about 3 or 4 that are my favorite that doesn’t the rest are bad it’s just my personal tastes really.
