Trials of Mana

Trials of Mana

A great remake for a great game, although not flawless. I compiled the items I wanted to highlight on bullets below for better clarity. Do bear in mind I’m halway through the game at the time of writing.

-Overall comparison to the original: If you’re one of those people feeling trauma over FFVIIR, rest assured that this game is extremely loyal to the original, at least up to what what current social standards allow (lookign at you, Sorceress class attack), the exception being the battle sytem, but we can all agree that the original’s attack-retreat-weapon charged-attack cycle with screen freezing magic wouldn’t fly beyond the SNES.

Trials of Mana is an excellent example of how to do remakes the right way. It is clear as water that the dev team learned a lot from the remake of Secret of Mana, because this sequel improves nearly everything that game did wrong. Gameplay is smooth and character models look great.

However, the game has some issues. The story is pretty simple and straightforward, as one would expect from older JRPGs; unfortunately the devs didn’t improve the plot from the original 1995 game, which shows. Villains are extremelly one-dimensional and can be described with few words. The main characters lack any form of development, and just kinda go with the flow. Also, the game is relatively short and not so difficult.

This review is biased due to childhood nostalgia. That being said this is an excellent game. If it is on sale and you like rpg’s even a tiny bit, I would definitely recommend this.

I love to sell 4000 wedding rings/apples to just buy and sell them back again for a a large profit.

Perfectly balanced economy.

Story

The first half of the game doesn’t have much plot beyond clearing game boards because of the protagonist’s curiosity, though there is some lore about the previous heroine. The second half has more lore and more stakes, as well as several plot bombshells. While I did like the story of the second half, I can see the lack of real conflict in the first half turning new players off before they can get to the better half.

Gameplay

The first few parts of the game make it hard to gather any resources. Enemies don’t drop money and they aren’t guaranteed to drop sellable items, meaning the player is stuck in a resource drought situation if they try to do traditional grinding. This can be intimidating because in the beginning, the only way to fully recover the robot is to pay 10 cents, which means inefficient gameplay can result in waste of limited money. The resource situation does get better in the later parts of the game, since the player can find free healing/save statues and an accessory that increases the drop rate.

An easy but very nice RPG game. Its style really attracts me, and maybe anyone who loves ‘nostalgia’.

And if you love collecting things, or riddling, this game can be unexpectedly a little hard for you.

BTW bugs are seen too often, and the scene called ‘Sesame Hideout’ even disappears! Hope it can be fixed sooner.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition

I bought Skyrim special edition about 3-4 years ago on steam.

I had already played it a lot on xbox(360 for og and xbone for SSE) and the modding envy brought me to the PC platform.

I probably have over 3-4k hours into this game at this point not counting the sheer amount of time modding it and even making mods for it myself.

This game has gotten me through some pretty rough times too.

However here’s the rub, I bought SPECIAL edition not this crappy Anniversary edition.

If the upgrade is non optional (default Steam and Bethesda), which it is, then it follows this is by definition false advertising, which is straight up illegal.

Broken beyond repair by the last update- and not for the first time. It’s time to move on I guess… has been interesting, rather nice at times, but no more. Enough is enough- we worked hard to create these ..fragile worlds of wonder… this forced update *(THANKS, STEAM) broke the very fabric of our alternate realities …10 years after the dust could have silently settled…

I guess I am not the only one going crazy during pandemic- I buy and mod guitars like mad, I re-decorate my home..got a friend who started to learn to play ukulele and others study un-ironically the ancient art of ..pickles for Heaven’s sake, asking grannies around for best recipes… And these guys code. Re-code, re-do something..just to make something happen “in the meantime” or whatever…Just like M$ with their disaster win 11, these guys just can’t stay in /do something non-neurotic it seems..And we’re on the receiving end.

Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition

Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition

Baldur’s Gate is truly a masterpiece. Despite it’s beauty, tactical depth and great story, the game does not take itself too seriously. This cannot be said of many other leading RPG titles, which I soon begin to find rather corny. If you like RPGs and have not played Baldur’s Gate, then this is an absolute must, you do not even need to waste your time reading this review but of course you are welcome to. If you have played the original BG and are curious about Beamdog’s boob job, I share with you my opinion.

Classics are often thought to be timeless for future generations to enjoy, but the same cannot be said for Baldur’s Gate—and it’s not because CRPGs are uncommon. To go blind into BG in 2016 is practically impossible because how modern expectations are at odds with the brutal accessibility of ’90s computer games.

Baldur’s Gate, simply put, is an sarcophagus; it is a coffin of a bygone time of design philosophies and of late ’90s player expectations, immersed in the counter-culture of D&D and of fantasy-fiction that is written in its code like hieroglyphics to modern eyes. The game’s reverence is both a nostalgic call-back as well as an appreciation of BG’s systems as a traditional role-playing experience.

Inexistence Rebirth

Inexistence Rebirth

It looked better than it is, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it.

The hit detection is a little twitchy, and I noticed there’s a moment where you can’t attack while you’re flashing after being hit. In Sister Mode the character is unable to hit the crawling worms and toads while standing and attacking in front of them. This is either intentional or an oversight, at least in the case of the toad.

Otherwise, for a game made by one person I’m impressed. As a developer myself I know the difficulties and loss of time being a one person team entails.

DARK SOULS™ II: Scholar of the First Sin

DARK SOULS™ II: Scholar of the First Sin

I am kind of surprised that I have not reviewed this game yet, Surprise! It’s my favorite of the series. I played DS2 twice as much as I did DS and DS3 combined. DS2 really hit the mark as slower pace, tactical, and methodical combat. I love the variety of viable builds in the game. I love the fashion in the this game compared to the others. I love the community that still plays this game and there are fair number of people on my friends list that I have met through this game.

I’m a a Sunbro at heart and the thing that I love the most about this game is the “Frigid Outskirts”. Growing up in Minnesota, it really made feel like home. I spent a good deal of time throwing my summons sign next to Vengarl of Forossa’s sign in the hopes that the host would choose us both of which they very often did. I would stick to Vengarl’s side like glue and watch his back and he would watch mine. It would be me, Vengarl, the host, and maybe another summons going across the frozen waste. Me trying to keep the host from going the wrong direction or running when the blizzard hits. As long as Vengarl was alive, I would be alive and as long as I was alive, Vengarl would be alive except for the times that he got donkey kicked off of the cliff.

After doing this game 100% I can safely say this game is an unfair piece of trash game that just wants you to suffer. The bosses are not the issue I did not find them to be unfair for the most part, yet they definitely are not good, the problem lies in the level design where the developers just decided to spam the same enemies over and over and over to just gank you as much as possible, so you suffer as much as they feasibly could make you because their goal was not to make a game like Dark Souls 1 where the player is supposed to overcome the challenges, the goal of the developers was to make a difficult game completely ignoring the vision of 1 where the difficulty is not the focus heck, even the intro tells you how many times you will die.
