Lawless Lands

Lawless Lands

This is a game that I’ve watched being developed for over a year. I’ve run through the early releases multiple times, checking for typos, looking for bugs, and restarting over and over. I helped work on many of the character sprites and some of the sidequests.

Overview

Many hours of game play and numerous side-quests that complement the main storyline make for an in-depth game and story. The character creation can take some getting used to, but the skills, talents, and customization when leveling works very nicely for creating a hero with the attributes you like.

Lawless Lands is the latest rpg by Corrosive Studios, a small indie dev that makes games that really scratch that exploration RPG itch that few games do. (Closest comparisons are the likes of Fallout 3 and Baldur’s Gate I, in the fun explorative sense, NOT the buggy sense)

A survival dark fantasy RPG, You explore the Large, yet streamlined open world (It has an Overworld, so you aren’t going to waste a ton of time in empty wastes) With light survival mechanics (Just eat and drink things on occasion, it’s not stressful or annoying like so many other survival games) While completing quests for various factions and growing your power/party.

Pugmire: Treasure of the Sea Dogs

Good story that reminded me of the kind I grew up with when I was a child. Its a cute adventure story, with just enough realism and consequences to make it enjoyable.

“Whose a good dog? Your a good dog arn’t you? Yes you are!”

-would happily be a good dog again!

It’s not what I expected. There is no game-play, you are just reading and selecting answers the whole time. It is not entertaining. It just feels like I’m taking a test.

Do you want to play a party game without breaking friendships? Then mealmates is for you. This sequel is a direct upgrade from the first game, where you can do more than just spoil your mealmate, play minigames and give him away to be eaten. You can customize your mealmate with clothes you can find in the “neighbourhood”, cook recipes which can later be bought in the shops and unlock things by completing achievements.

The replayability is GOLD, the music is GOLD, the game itself is just GOLD.

Worth the money. Some day I will invite my friends to give this a try.

Midwintar

Midwintar

Midwintär catches you at Khazar’s Pass.

You shelter in a cave as the days and nights grow long and cold,

as the snow seals you in and as the world darkens.

Midwintär is a narrative-driven stealth action game inspired by medieval horror folklore that combines careful tactical planning with fast-paced arcade execution and innovative gossip mechanics. Play and switch between three protagonists - a werewolf, a vampire, and a moon witch - to exact your revenge on a vicious religious cult.

Off-Kilter Sunny Horror On the outside, Midwintär takes place among sunny, medieval villages populated by friendly, hard-working, and devoted inhabitants. Stay overnight, though, and you might be horrified to reveal the true nature of their sacred rituals. The world of Midwintär is gruesome and dark but also funny.

Sun / Moon Gameplay Cycle Midwintär features a 3-minute day-night cycle that changes your abilities. You must use your daytime skills such as lock-picking or spreading rumours among villagers to best prepare the terrain for the night-time havoc when you transform into a bloodthirsty, overpowered monster.

Gossip Mechanics Each villager in Midwintär has their own suspicion-meter you can influence by gossiping and spreading rumors about other villagers, and there is also a panic-meter that changes the AI behaviour of all villagers on the map. You can use this against villagers - hide the firewood to lure the lumberjack into the night, kill him near the chapel to incriminate the priest, and later spread rumours on seeing him covered in blood. He’ll be hanged in no time!

Three Playable Characters You will be able to choose, play and switch between three playable characters - a werewolf, a vampire, and a moon witch - each of whom possesses a distinctive skillset and boasts a different playstyle.

Non-linear Skilltree You will be able to customize the skillset and playstyle of each character by opting to complete alternate missions in levels, which will reward you with a special bonus skill of your choice. Will your werewolf hone his terrifying howl, or will he become one with the wolf-packs of the forest?

Co-Op Multiplayer Midwintär will feature a split-screen and a local multiplayer for up to three players, enabling all three characters to fight together.

The corrupt and self-righteous religious institution Oblique Order is attempting to destroy the peaceful cohabitation of people and magical creatures in the pagan world of Midwintär, and enforce their order by uniting people against the powers of the wild. You must stop them before they exterminate your kind…

Midwintär starts off as a revenge story that slowly shifts into an exploration about our relationship to the unknown, and about the limits of what we can hope to control or understand.

WEREWOLF

The main protagonist is the werewolf, a former disciple of the Oblique Order, disillusioned and out for vengeance. During the game, he is guided by the voice of Midwintär, an ancient force of nature. His skills revolve around spreading panic and using brute force.

VAMPIRE

The vampire, once a powerful force of the night, his might now reduced by the spells of men. He cannot cross running water nor enter houses uninvited, but his power is in his allure - he can enthrall people to do his bidding, or forge blood links to ensure undying loyalty.

MOON WITCH

Then, there is the moon witch. Saved just before she was burned at the stake, she had felt on her skin the terror of order, and wishes to rid the world of their influence. Her skills revolve around misdirecting suspicion at others and using concoctions to alter their behaviour.

“Attending the Masked Meeting, you overhear their plans - they have already set all things in motion.”

The Dragon and the Djinn

The Dragon and the Djinn

Everyone knows the story. The young man who came out of nowhere to become the Emir of Ghariba when the previous ruler went missing. The djinn who helped him by granting wishes. The Grand Vizier Jaafar, whose noble birth and political skill placed him in the palace at the Emir’s right hand.

What they don’t know is what happened next - and that’s where you come in.

The Dragon and the Djinn is a 620,000 word interactive epic fantasy novel by Athar Fikry, where your choices control the story. It’s entirely text-based—without graphics or sound effects—and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

A dragon has appeared, threatening the safety of Ghariba and its new emir’s precarious reign.

You have a destiny. You’re not sure yet what it will be: perhaps you will protect the city, or become the greatest wielder of magic in the land, or gather enormous wealth.

You also have a sister. She believes that it is her destiny to slay the dragon, with a magic sword made by the warrior Iskander who has traveled from a far-off land in search of legendary creatures to fight.

Most importantly of all, you have a djinn, given to you by Jaafar himself. Your djinn will help you achieve your destiny by granting your every wish…or so you hope.

Navigate the politics of palace, court, and city; make allies - or enemies - among the people; all while the dragon soars overhead, threatening Ghariba more with every passing day. To find your way forward, you’ll have to use your magic, your wits, your courage, your faith, and of course, your djinn.

Will you help your sister slay the dragon? Will you try to slay it yourself? Or will you try to befriend it, learning deeper secrets of magic and the city’s past? Or will you simply take advantage of the chaos to make yourself the richest person in Ghariba?

  • Play as male, female, or non-binary; gay, straight, or bi; asexual, aromantic, or both; cis or trans.

  • Achieve your destiny as a dragon-slayer, a silver-tongued poet, the protector of the realm, or something even greater

  • Wish for more wishes! (No, sorry, you can’t actually do that.)

  • Secure the reign of the current emir, or scheme to depose him and replace him with another ruler - perhaps even take the throne yourself

  • Fly on a magic carpet

  • Find love with a dragon-slaying warrior, a charming court poet, an idealistic prophet, a lofty priestess, a wealthy noble - or even your djinn!

Be careful what you wish for…

I am surprised this game has not gained enough attention as I will have to spread the word out about this game.

Here is what I like about this game:

It has a very interesting Hero System meaning as you gain experience points you can spend experience points to improve a number of skills along with improving your main stats of your Hero like health, defense, attack, resist and moving around on the world map. It has at least 20-30 skills you can spend your experience on .

Other 4x games when you gain a level you get some increases based on that new level but in this game you spend your experience as you see fit so there really are no levels in this game so I think it is actually a better system.

Space Trader: Merchant Marine

Space Trader: Merchant Marine

Space Trader Merchant Marine is that strange situation where two very different genres have been combined together in the hope of hitting that once in a lifetime combination that everybody agrees is pure genius, like Vampires and Teenagers, or Ninjas and Cheerleaders. Space Trader doesn’t quite hit that special recipe however.

Space Trader is a combination of a numbers trading simulator and a first person shooter and by far and large the biggest problem is that playing the game you have trouble telling which of these two aspects feel the most tacked on.

Real player with 82.7 hrs in game

Space Trader Merchant Marine was released in Oct 23, 2008. It boasts a score of 89% from a review by GameFocus saying, ““One of the best indie games of 2008. An innovative and addictive experience. Addictive, very fun and innovative are the best words to describe the game and the bottom line is this is a welcome addition to any gamer’s library so buy this game and enjoy it.”

This is very akin to the how ‘reviews’ reflected Bubsy 3D on its own packaging, to those that remember.

The game is broken down into four different areas, exploration, trading, time management, and fighting/bounty hunting.

Book of Travels

Book of Travels

This is a very unusual mmorpg. It uses small servers, and many of them. The setting is pleasantly exotic. The artwork/graphics style is truly beautiful. The music is atmospheric. You play as a lone nomadic wanderer travelling a strange but peaceful land. You have to discover things as well as getting good at trading. The combat is pretty unique. Periodically you find stat-based object encounters called Endeavors, that will richly reward you. There are also plenty of worthwhile roadside encounters. There is a very unusual method for handling co-operative party play too. It is all simple, intuitive, and innovative.

Real player with 266.8 hrs in game

There is something meditative about this game. While you can fight, you really don’t have to. I will admit at times it gets buggy, but I can look past that to the gem it is. Where other games give you a list of things to do and employ constant action to engage you, Book of Travels engages you with its world building, slow and introspective journeys and it’s skill system that you uncover along the way. There are so many secrets and much knowledge that you uncover as you walk the bereft of it’s massive, mystical world. I think, with time and more updates, this could be a incredible game.
