ココロクローバー パート1/Kokoro Clover Part1

ココロクローバー パート1/Kokoro Clover Part1

I do really like it. I am a beginner in Japanese. I do wish that the words were separated. This would help me know when words start and end. I can read hiragana but I dont know what they mean in English. So having words separated and having Particles in a different color would help too. But I dont know if this game is for people that know Japanese already. Anyway cute game. I will keep playing it and trying to translate it.

These are the words I tried to translate myself. haha Its from the story.

First, know that this game is only the 1st chapter. In a sense, a Demo/tutorial.

Now, the short version:

A pixel art platformer made in the vibe of a true Sunday Morning Anime. It is what it says on the tin. For casual players, those who have never played a platformer, and those afflicted by bad case of nostalgia. The game is fun, not hard, colourful, with good music, and simple gameplay. Being the Demo/Tutorial, promotion piece it is, it has some simple, but bearable flaws. However, they do not hinder the experience. Ideal as a ‘palate cleanser’ after more hardcore games like Ori, Hollow Knight, or the Gunvolt series. Main drawback for many would be that it is entirely in Japanese, with only English subtitles on the cutscenes. Still worth playing.

Assault Spy

Assault Spy

Assault Spy is currently my favourite PC-exclusive game. It’s a character-action game in the same vein as Devil May Cry, which is impressive considering a small indie dev team in Japan made it. More additions to this subgenre are welcome.

Wazen and everyone who contributed to this game should feel proud, because they nailed it, and took heed what makes a great character-action game. The combat system rewards stylish play and changing your attacks constantly, with an indicator akin to DMC, and you use the in-game currency to buy more moves to use in battle. The two main characters play very differently from one another, with their own strengths and weaknesses rounding each other out, and the presentation of the game is pretty nice overall. They certainly found smart workarounds for their limitations, as most cutscenes feature well-drawn illustrations of characters talking, akin to a visual novel, and while you’ll be playing through the same levels you did the first time around during Amelia’s campaign, they found a clever story-reason for it and used a few new bosses to keep things interesting.

This was a game I bought on a rather decent discount and yet ironically…I would have bought it at full price, now don’t get me wrong like any game out there it has it’s flaws, it by no means is a perfect game, not technically or graphically but what it is as a game is a surprisingly interesting and funny story with gameplay mechanics that although a bit awkward at times feel like they have a strong impact and style to them that has a mix of cool, elegant, badass and funny as heck, so the short version here is me saying this is a good game I would recommend to anyone that is very DMC in terms of combat but lives up to it’s own style dood.

ココロクローバー パート2/Kokoro Clover Part2

This game got me surprised, is quite cute and fun. The way that the dev made it as if it’s some sort of Sunday morning anime is interesting and different. We also can see the passion he put in doing this, since I imagine is quite difficult for the short staff that appears on the credits, it make me want to support them.

In a way, it’s a quite simple side scroller, no difficult controls or mechanics, is quite easy and there’s a option to just skip and keep watching the story. The focus on this is the story, like a episode of the anime, even the stages are named after anime episodes and play like anime episodes, there’s much more story on each episode than game stages. So be warned, buy only if you are interested in reading and watching the story, if you’re thinking of that, it’s worth of the full price.

NO REVIEWS?! Ok, let’s remedy that pronto.

The short version: Casual platformer featuring a “Sunday Morning Anime” style. Simple controls, simple story, catchy music, cute art. Now featuring greater length than its “Part 1”. It is essentially what follows immediately after Kokoro Cover Part 1. No noticeable flaws, except for the length, this is an Indie game made by a 3-4 person team, so they are taking their time. Ideal game for that afternoon when you don’t know what to play, or as palate cleanser after a more serious/meaty game like Monster Boy, Shantae, or Owlboy. English language (cutscene subtitles) are to come on a later patch.

The Legend of Tianding

The Legend of Tianding

As a Taiwanese, I can’t recommend The Legend of Tianding enough.

A 2D platformer beat’em up game, the platform stages & the combat system are the core aspect of the game. The combat system is responsive & flows very well, with a weapon-stealing mechanic that allows you to steal the weapon of virtually every normal enemy unit (tho the weapons are of limited use.) As you progress through the stage, you also learn special kung fu moves that complement your arsenal of skills. These special moves are not only useful in combat, but are often essential in traversing the platform stages as well, especially for the optional treasure part of the game. The grappling mechanic (using the same waist scarf you use to steal weapons) takes a bit of getting use to, but once perfected it is a lot of fun to play with as well.

Played on the harder difficulty. A very solid 2D sidescrolling beatemup with a unique cultural presentation (Taiwanese folklore), superb art-style, great music/sound design and voiceover. The story while pretty straightforward overall, it does have a couple really nice twists, and I especially love the narrator’s style.

Overall The levels are edging on dragging over a bit longer than they should be (IMHO), but the jumping puzzles are good and varied enough to keep it flowing.

Combat-wise it feels really good to use the combos, just-dodges and projectile-deflections - the iconic weapon stealing move can be chained together with almost every move you make (and the enemy weapons are really useful at times) thus making this combat experience somewhat different from other great 2D side-beat’mups that came before it.

Fairy Bloom Freesia

Fairy Bloom Freesia

A cute and simplistic browler for one player. That’s pretty much it. Fairy Bloom Freesia is one of those games, which just don’t give you enough material for a long and complicated review. It has only five basic levels, on which you should survive a few waves of enemies (at least one of which usually include protecting so-called vortexes, which will probably be harder than fighting bosses). Talking about bosses, every level comes with one. They’re all different, but not unique enough to make you actually remember them. The story is cute, dramatic, but, as everything else in this game, is way too straightforward, simple and generic.

Fairy Bloom Freesia is a game that is played in a 2D plane but with 2.5D graphics. People would call a beat-em-up or hack n' slash with bits of platforming and RPG thrown in. I must say that I was not expecting anything out of this game (curiosity finally struck since I had bought the Edelweiss' Fairy Bloom + Ether Vapor Double Pack, mainly for Ether Vapor) but I am glad as all hell I spent the extra $3 for that Double Pack.

Gameplay involves fighting mobs in arenas, between each day you can invest the mana you earn to learn new normal moves or unlock special moves, any of which can be assigned to neutral, left/right, down, or up + special button. There is a decent amount of customization thanks to the freedom of assigning special moves in this fashion. Lots of combos are possible out of everything you can put together. The game is fairly challenging, and ramps up really quick so a personal tip from me to you: forward + basic attack cancelled into a guard is a quick effective move that can be done repeatedly which is good against big enemies or bosses not stunned by regular hits. You net hits and have the ability to block shortly after your attack when needed but there is some technical prowess to it if you want to do numerous cancels in a short period of time.
