Mutated Muter’s Invasion

Mutated Muter’s Invasion

“Mutated Muter’s Invasion” is a fun and humorous 2D platformer/action adventure game about a music note fighting an evil monster from the outer space, the Mutated Muter (pun intended), who “invades” the Solar System to mute all the music on the Earth. The nasty Mutated Muter wants to destroy our Solar System’s cosmic harmony (also often loosely called “the harmony of the spheres”) and mute music in the souls of all humans forever.

Imagine a world without something that is everywhere in our everyday lives… Not only does music sound at concerts, parties, and other events, but it also follows you while you are watching TV or a video on the Internet, driving, or maybe even jogging or on your way somewhere with earbuds on. Although there do exist games that are based on music as a video game genre, there seems to be a lack of (if any at all) games that are NOT music-based genre-wise yet are wholly ABOUT music, especially saving music, as a subject. So, the idea of “Mutated Muter’s Invasion” was born.

This game’s idea is to provide a mostly 2D platforming action experience, often loosely described as “Mario-esque”, while focusing on music as the main subject. A couple side-scrolling shooter levels are also present. Fight the Mutated Muter’s agents at different locations/levels stylized as music scores with some fancy mechanics and collect sharps, flats, naturals, and other power-ups and useful items in the fancy universe of “Mutated Muter’s Invasion”! Shoot “un-muting” sonic bullets and super sonic bullets at the mobs, avoid the muting weapons of the enemies, and more. And, of course, punish the overconfident Muter himself!

WARNING: the game is HARD! Choosing the “expert” mode right away is highly discouraged.

One (but not the only!) challenge is timings, which are as important here as if you actually were a performer learning a musical piece… Bad timings will cause you to fall down into the abyss or take hits. Other dangers await the player too, even where things may look nice and relaxing. It’s not only the mobs who are nasty and sinister… Even some platforms will try to trick you!

Features include:

  • fun gameplay mechanics

  • original (for the most part) fun graphics and audio

  • 4 difficulty modes: easy, medium, hard, and expert

  • tries are unlimited—that’s right, no annoying “lives” and “continues”; what’s more, your game gets saved using Steam Cloud!

  • responsive controls

  • the Xbox 360 controller is supported*

  • on the keyboard, control with both arrows and W-A-S-D is supported

*controller support is conventional, i.e. raw (NOT specifically programmed as Steam Input aware)

Hieroglyph: Prologue is a 2D retro pixel platformer/brawler built by filling out templates in the godawful GameMaker Studio game construction kit.

While some modicum of effort went into filling out the templates here, as the game features some VN story elements and a surreal back story, at heart it’s still just a bad, clunky GameMaker Studio template flip. It’s impossible to build a great game from a terrible, flawed foundation, no matter how much effort goes into putting lipstick on the GameMaker pig.

Vectromirror™

The game is similar to Vectromirror 0. Although in early access, as of writing, the 3 levels are extremely fun to play. It is a bit harder than Vectromirror 0, so be prepared focus! Overall a really fun game, and definitely worth the cost.

An incredible game. I’ve never played a game with better physics or game mechanics. The graphics are very unusual but unique. I can’t think of any flaws.

Overview

Youropa is a 3D puzzle game where you must defy the laws of gravity to reach your goal. Walking on walls, upside down, on your side, at ridiculous heights, will have your senses mixed up and confused. On a few occasions I had to stop playing the game because I felt a bit sick. The game really portrays a sense of height as you walk around on ledges and walls looking down at the scenery below.

Second Update

I’d like to keep the original review in tact so future viewers can see the full context and timeline of the events that took place. To summarize, the developer saw my review and responded with patches much faster than I would have ever expected. In the comments I called the response unprecedented, and I’ll echo that here.

When I review a game I’m never going in to that with the hope of punishing the dev or game. In my opinion, the absolute best outcome one could hope for is for them to care and respond positively to criticism which happened here.

Good potential. While now you can only play the prologue, the mechanics are simple to grasp, and I feel like there’s good potential in this indie game for speedrunning. Will watch closely!

This game is really cool! Simple and easy to understand, you can just jump into it without any fuss. The animation is delightful and utterly spooky at times. A sweet story of love and rescue is punctuated by perfectly matching music and it appears that more content is on the way in the future. I played it a couple of times and would eagerly revisit for new content.

Apastron

Apastron

From a casual standpoint this game is great. For the price it has so much content. You can play through the game several times and the massive amount of random weapons keeps the game fresh. There are cool hidden places to explore that you will find on subsequent runs that yield different weapons. Some weapons don’t feel great but the dev patches so often and guns are constantly being made smoother. My big complaint with combat is that I cannot see my reticle easily. I don’t know if this is a resolution scaling issue because I play on 2k or not. MOST IMPORTANTLY OF ALL the game is getting so much free content. New weapons, abilities, and areas have been patched in since I first started playing. A WHOLE NEW EXPANSION will be FREE at the end of the month that nearly doubles the games length. Now for those of you wondering how I have so many hours in this game, I speedrun it and boy is it amazing for that. The modern movement in a classic style shooter plus the perfect amount of breakable stuff makes it the most fun speedrun I’ve ever done. This game has something for everyone. If you struggle with the tutorialisation please don’t just quit, give it an effort. The tutorial is much improved. It’s $6 just try it gamers. NOTE: I was given a copy for free about a month early to help with some QA since I expressed interest, but I promise this does not vastly change my opinion nor was I paid for anything.

The effort made and put into Apastron (especially from a one man developer) is pretty admirable. Here you have what amounts to the first episode (about 2 to 2-1/2 hours of game) of a unique world peopled by an oppressive corporation and the resistance that would oppose them.

While the game has its ‘open’ moments, the structure is indeed Episode 1: Level 1 in structure and it does proceed normally, that is to say, completely linearly. There is a bit of down time between missions but that is mostly used exploring the small hub town and speaking to the denizens about their day-to-day and their individual goings-on and to collect some currency and spend it at the weapon-shop.

The game is world building and connected to its sequel Akashicverse Malicious Wake.

Story mode brings light into the darkness into what happens in the other games.

The game in itself seems complex at first, but when you spent a little time and play the mission mode you will learn how the game works. Mission mode also got some extra challenges for good players.

There is also a manual in both languages in the game folder. It can help you to understand how each character works.

Your goal is pretty much to beat the other player in puyu puyu smash bros with top music in the background and all the visual candy.
