Neko Navy

Neko Navy

Introduction

Neko Navy is a hand drawn horizontal shmup by DeathMofuMofu featuring shooting cats. I was a bit reserved because of the amount of bullets on screen in the gameplay I saw. I’m decent at regular shmups but not as good at bullet hell shmups. However a Steam friend liked it, it was on sale and I love cats so I bought it.

Gameplay

When you start out you can choose between 3 cat characters with different weapons. You get a primary fire and a bomb. When activating a bomb you’re invincible for a moment and all bullets turn into cat crystals. Pick up enough cat crystals and you get another bomb. Along the way you can pick up power ups that will upgrade your primary fire and give you a bomb if you didn’t had one already. Completing the game will unlock new characters (two cats and a fish). You start with 3 lives and get an extra life every 100M you score.

Have you ever pretended your hand is a plane/spaceship and zoomed it around going “pew! pew!” blowing up bad guys? Ever play a “bullet hell” game and thought it might be cool in full VR? Shooty Skies Overdrive let’s you play pretend again, and shows just how cool it can be. There are Power Ups to give your off-hand things to do (with full right/left handed support) and difficulty levels that live up to the name “Overdrive.” Progression, checkpoints and gameplay unlocks help keep things fresh, and let’s you tweak numbers to get the Power Ups you prefer. Nothing hugely sophisticated, but varied and hectic enough to keep me coming back for more. Bright but low-fi graphics means it runs like silk, even with a million bullets in your face.

PUSS!

PUSS!

after a long time i finaly beat this game and trust me it is harder than it looks, i think this game diserves a lot more attention that it is getting.

its sad because its really just luck if these sort of inde games become popular. There are lots of inde horror games like this that get huge amounts of attention on youtube because one youtuber plays a game, then fans recommend that game to other youtubers who play it, then even more youtubers play that game because they saw someone else play the game and they think it would make for a good video, it crates a domino affect of popularity. Im not saying this is a bad thing but it sort of means that you just have to get a little bit lucky. it means that a lot of games that are really good like this one will not be as popular because they are not picked up and advertised by youtube gamers. Let me give an example, recently a game by the name of baldi’s basics in education and learning was picked up and played by youtubers and became very popular though a big wave of popular gaming youtubers playing it. You my or my not have herd of it but a LOT of youtubers played it. Others may disagree but I don’t think it was a very good game, it was ok, but it didn’t bring anything new to the table, it wasn’t very well scary and the gameplay was very RNG based and not really entertaining. You may disagree but they only reason it gained popularity was because one youtuber played it and others followed suit.

Awesome Vaporwave/Glitch art aesthetics wasted on an ungodly abomination of game design. It is truly baffling how one could screw up such a simple idea. Your goal is to move your cursor around a labyrinth without colliding with (often moving and dynamic) geometry, you know, like in the internet classic Scary Maze (the game actually has a level referencing it, so bonus points for that). The levels themselves are absolutely amazing, each one of them is a separate work of Vaporwave art, accompanied by equally sweet soundtrack (composed out of truly bizarre samples, just like Vaporwave should be). Everything moves, glitches out, the mazes suddenly change in shape, and there are a lot of gimmicks to spice things up.

Flewfie’s Adventure

Flewfie’s Adventure

You play as a Cat in a UFO! AND you get to dress it up in super adorable costumes! What more can you possibly want?

Playing this game has been a sincere pleasure!

About the game:

Flewfie’s Adventure is an uber cute action-adventure game with 3 difficulties (Easy, Normal, and Hard) where you fly through 5 really creative Worlds blasting monsters with the main goal of stopping the evil cat Uzzu who stole a prototype UFO from Scientist Snail and is unleashing chaos throughout the cosmos. Each World features 5 levels with different environments and new monsters and their own mini-bosses AND also 3-4 Big Boss levels. In each Level there are 5 coins to collect and a hidden puzzle room to save a Bundrop. ‘100%‘ing’ a level (getting all coins and saving the Bundrop) will unlock a chest in the World Map containing a new costume piece for Flewfie or a new skin for your UFO which can increase Attack Power or Defense. There are also side quests you can complete which reward you with even more skins!

Flewfie’s Adventure is an enjoyable and charming game. It is very clear that a lot of attention was paid to the visual aesthetic of the game. There are a vast variety of enemies populating the different worlds, all with adorable and unique designs. The worlds themselves have levels that visually vary from level to level so nothing gets stale. As for game-play this is definitely on the casual side for the genre. I died once or twice towards the end on normal mode. While there was a jump in difficulty by worlds 4 and 5, there was always an abundance of health that ensured I wouldn’t die as long as I retreated from the rougher encounters. And honestly that’s fine, it just might be worth starting off on hard mode. With that being said, the shooty-shooty stuff was still fun and reactive. Something I didn’t expect was how many boss fights there were, with about three or four per world, and a lot of them had cool designs and attack patterns.

Wand Wars

Wand Wars

Wand Wars is a really polished game, and probably the best party-game I’ve ever played.

While there’s a clear Lethal League feel to it, it’s clearly more accessible, because the game mechanics are so simple. The problem with Lethal League is that even though it’s an excellent game, it has that fighting game aspect that makes it very complex. You’ve got to learn safe zones, angles of shooting, bunts, with or without jumps, special moves, etc… and consequently, when you hit 50 hours of playtime, your friends will be no match for you anymore.

I love playing four player co-op games that are suitable for groups of varied skill level. This game manages brilliantly, another title with simple controls but surpisingly deep gameplay. Plus superb art and visual effects, stuff that makes the gameplay feel super satisfying when you land that sick off the wall double kill. In addition to the main mechanic of playing dodgeball with a big ball of magic you have power-ups and the ability to turn other players into chickens (take that Kyle). Lastly the game comes with a good selection of maps, each with its own unique twist. One map has fires you can light with your chicken spell, light them all and you summon a minion to help you; another features bubbles that you must break to get the powerups. All in all this is one of those games that will have all your friends asking when they can stop by and play again.

QP Shooting - Dangerous!!

QP Shooting - Dangerous!!

In most of the Shoot’Em Up & Bullet Hell games, they are fun to play, delivers good intense bosses moments and frustrations that sometimes enrages you like never before (that depends though). Such elements are well expected in this genre and that’s what make the games nice, if it is. And for that, QP Shooting - Dangerous!! is one of those games in that genre that delivered quite nicely, in a way. Let’s check it out.

The Gameplay

In this kind of game, there’s nothing much to expect, except shooting enemies at sight. It is very straightforward and pretty simple to play. You shoot, evade the incoming bullets and defeat all the bosses until to the end. Of course, the simplicity depends on how hard the game is, in which in this case, is the opposite. One might think playing the Easy difficulty would be fine, but it’s just as unexpectedly hard. And don’t think about the Super Difficulty (the Ultra Hard mode) as it’s insane. Then again, since this is a Bullet Hell game too, so it’s understandable. Moving on, the interesting features in this game are there are the different formations and modes. This is nice because it has so formations and modes to choose from, thus, making you wonder which is the one that fits you best. So, even for just a stage, you can replay it with many different formations and modes. However, unlike most generic games, it has no continue and once all the lives are depleted, that’s it, game over. You can’t continue and that makes it very super frustrating, especially if you’re going for certain achievements and ended up dead in final boss stage. Bummer! Speaking of achievements, there are a few easy to get while some are insanely hard to achieve. It kind of makes you wonder, what were the developer thinking to make such an achievements that could enrages you to the level you’ve never imagine could. Hard game. Plus, it only has 5 stages so it’s kind of short for a shoot’em up game. In fact, it’s kind of rare too.

Despite how simple this game looks, it’s a shockingly deep and polished bullet hell smup. While, if your a fan of the genre, you’re probably not going to encounter many completely original mechanics, what you will find is a large range of ways to approach a familiar formula. Unlike many bullet hell games, where defensive play is essential, in this the majority of bullets are produced by low health minions, and since bullets are transformed into points on death, aggressive strategies are shockingly valid. The game also allows you to customize your bullet patterns (although most need to be unlocked) and switch between three of them on the fly (either with a direct bind and/or with cycling if your prefer). While most are fairly simple, some are complex and can be affected by the direction of your movement, your location when you switched to them or the use of slow move (the essential bullet hell feature reduces your speed and displays your hit dot for precise dodging).

Explottens

Explottens

If you like HEAVY METAL and CATS, this game is for you!

I was obsessed with Luftrausers when it first came out because it was a throw back to 90s games like Wings of Fury that I used to play on the Amiga 500. Explottens is awesome because it also ramps up in the intensity and style of Metal Slug but doesn’t forget its sense of humour! Unlike the afore-mentioned games though, there is a narrative with plenty of word play (one boss is a psycotic kitty from Russia called ‘Vladimir Cutin’). It certainly doesn’t take itself seriously and why would you? THE AIRCRAFT ARE BEING OPERATED BY KITTENS!

The Good-

  • Its a very polished game. Great Visuals, effects, sounds with a lot of attention to detail

  • explosions! the fx add a lot of eye candy

  • lots of options to upgrade and customise- guns, planes and more guns

  • Side-kicks- they add a lot to the gameplay and its great to see each one is unique

  • Boss Fights- there are 4 of them in there and each battle is different.

The Bad

  • difficult to get into immediately - tutorial could use some work (but then again its early access)

  • controls get some getting used to
