Neckbeards: Basement Arena

Neckbeards: Basement Arena

Easy to get in to, but hard to master. Fun and fast-paced, especially so with the local co-op!

I haven’t seen anything quite like this on Steam before. A blend of challenging gameplay, creative level/enemy design, a variety of awesome characters to choose from. Not to mention the daunting task of 100 levels to conquer.

I’m not great at the game yet but I am slowly improving, fighting each cleverly designed boss as I go along.

I look forward to continuing to best the basements!

I’m so ZZWized right now. This is one of the best games I ever played. The music and the memes just come pouring through your screen like butter dripping off of a hot tub. Very cozy game and fun to play.

Breakpoint

Breakpoint

Introduction

Breakpoint is a twin stick slasher, a new take on the twin stick shooter genre, it’s similar to Geometry Wars but with melee weapons instead of a gun. Raise your multiplier and score big!

Gameplay

You have to destroy the enemies to collect points and charge your weapon by picking up the stars destroyed enemies leave behind. There are twelve different types of enemies, the little green ones only leave stars behind but most of the others leave stars and a multiplier or weapon behind. There are five different weapons you can wield.

im currently 20th in the world with a highscore of 1.2 mill and at that point theres so much shit on your screen, its so satisfying to get a level 3 break and just wipe them all of.. only to start again.

Color Chaos

Color Chaos

I am a fan of games that have a simple concept that prove to be a lot of fun that they are the very definition of ‘turn on and play.’ Allow me to introduce you to Daniel Riley and his Steam developer debut title, Color Chaos. Twin stick shooters aren’t quite the rage that they used to be but they can be some of the most entertaining games on Steam. Fans of the genre may have thought that they had seen it all but the color swapping component of the game provides a freshness that revitalizes the genre.

A fresh and imaginative title, this game promises to be 1 of the best twin stick shooters of 2016, it’s sharp and comfortable to play while maintaining a good level of challenge in the available game modes, pick it up and put it down as you see fit going through the normal play mode, or the more interesting and faster paced chaos mode. the game is worth every penny you will pay, offering hours upon hours of constant enjoyment and always the opportunity to show off with your highscore on the leaderboards!

Everyday Shooter

This is a very strange game, that I personally love, but I’ll admit it’s not for everyone. It has some very unique artistic and musical sensibilities, and even its game design is pretty far outside the norm for shoot’em ups. The game actually gets easier the more times you replay, because you earn points to unlock things like extra starting lives. Each level follows vastly different logic and behaviors for the enemies, that keeps the game feeling fresh with each stage. And while the challenge is intense, it’s not really about winning, so much as existing in a state of focused flow while immerse in such beautifully strange visuals and the hypnotic music that synchronizes perfectly with it.

I’d rather call this an interactive art project than a game, without the negative undertones that are usually associated with such. Here, not only do you get the audiovisually interconnected experience, but the shmup gameplay itself is tight and reactive as well. I really liked the unique mechanics in each stage that offer a different challenge each time if you want to start racking up points in addition to just surviving. Then you have a range of other elements to complete the package, like the retro-ish low poly aesthetics, the awesome music, the signature bullet hell chaos and the giant bosses that feel super satisfying to beat.

Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved

Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved

This is one of my favourite games on steam. It’s everything you could hope for in an arcade game, it’s fun, addictive and straightforward. You have your ship and you have your enemies, all various shapes and sizes. You shoot them and earn points. Higher combos unlock better weaponry, although I think the 2nd to last gun is better than the last and most powerful. Where this game really sells is in its visuals. Enemies dont just explode when you shoot them, it’s a literal firework show. It’s wonderful to look at. The more enemies there are, the more fantastic the lightshow becomes, when enemies explode in a dazzling array, the world warps and wriggles and bends and a million different colours explode onscreen making you go ooooh and aaaaaah.

Lots of people out there claim there’s no point in buying this because Geometry Wars 3 contains this entire game. As an avid fan of both games, let me clarify that GW3 does NOT contain GW. There is a mode in GW3 that replicates GW, but there are big differences. Visually, GW has a very unique look from GW3, but more importantly, the mechanics of GW are different. In GW you first have a basic weapon that automatically upgrades to one of two more powerful weapons. It then cycles between these two weapons (rapid fire and wave), and that’s what gives GW it’s charm and distinction from GW3. I actually go back to play this one quite often because I love the simple yet addictive, pick up and play gameplay. It’s never not fun trying to reach a new high score. I personally find this game to be very well balanced, and a lot easier on the eyes than other, similar games like Waves.

I really enjoy this game and think it deserves more hype. It is very thought out and clean. One suggestion would be maybe having a bonus for choosing random powerup at the start? :)

P.S I learned things today about countries.

I love this game so much! I have been loving it ever since I played it back on newgrounds, it controls like dogshit but I still love the gameplay! I especially love the into cutscene and all the sprite work in the game, very cartoony and lovable!

Also the coding is nice, this is for you, brandy. Still never got credited for the clown animation. 9/10

7.5/10 — A lot of self-mockery and humour — indicating we shouldn’t take this free piece to_o serious — but definitely worth my time!

PS I’m not the artist here, but if you are, check this out! I assume it’s not just another joke ;-)

Transcripted

Transcripted

Transcripted was taken off Steam for three years as a result of Alkemi terminating their publishing agreement with their scummy publisher and engaging in a prolonged legal battle over the rights (and the profits) to the game. I played and quite enjoyed this game before it got taken down, and now that it’s back on Steam, I feel somewhat obliged to put in a good word for it after all these guys have been through.

This is a genre mashup between twin-stick bullet hell and “Zuma”-style match-3, and it actually works. I love it when a mashup actually works like this. Add in some creepy organic visuals (think of Metroid Prime’s title screen), a surprisingly great soundtrack, and surprisingly good voice acting, and you’ve got one solid, decent game here.

I think I got this game from a bundle (it might even be that Groupees bundle that sold the keys without legal consent of the developers), and I’ve been feeling bad about not buying this back in that daily deal in 2012 December. It just wasn’t available anymore for purchase…

The memory still haunts me, because this is one of the most enjoyable games I’ve ever played!

You’re essentially twin-stick-shooting and dodging stuff while you’re setting up combos in the “DNA chain”. It’s intense!
