Splendor

Splendor

I never played the board game but I have been a bit curious about it for some time. I’m really glad that I picked up the computer version. The game seems to be one of those elegant games that are easy to learn, but tough to master.

The idea is that you collect gems that you can use to purchase cards. Cards give you bonuses towards purchasing other cards, but also can give you victory points. To be fair to the person who goes last, the game ends at the end of the round whenever a person accumulates 15 victory points.

I downloaded the game and played it for about 2 weeks then an error started popping up. The load screen (guy looking at the jewel) pops up then an error pops up “From 6001, Not enough faction (4) for the number of player selected: 6”. I click ok, and it closes the program. I’ve tried everything, restart, uninstall, reinstall, etc. This was about 2 months ago. I contacted the customer support for Steam and the game itself, Days of Wonder. In the last 2 months, I got one email back from Days of Wonder support (2 weeks ago) and immediately responded explaining (again) my problem. I haven’t yet gotten a response.

Backgammon Blitz

Backgammon Blitz

The game obviously focuses on the excellent graphics rather than on the AI. It makes really fun to play with these beautifully designed boards! With the well-selected music it creates a very backgammon-like atmosphere. I’d really like to play it against online players - if there were some! Hope they’ll show up after a while. The AI is unfortunately way to weak to be a pleasure to play against it.

There are some minor design mistakes which do not conform to the standard Backgammon rules which will certainly annoy serious players. The doubling cube should, when used, reside on the player’s side who accepted the double. Also, the checkers on most of the boards are too small, especially on the leather board. They should nearly cover the base of the points - have a look at some high-quality boards to see the relations.

A video game version of a traditional board game that has all the features of playing face to face except for the ability to flip the board & coffee table over when you rage quit.

Backgammon Blitz is a healthy dose of nostalgia for ports from the card & board game generation like myself.

Gameplay:

Loading the game is quick & easy. You have a variety of options for personalizing your experience with game boards & music. My favorite game board is the stone version of course, because it just looks neat! But, unlike many games, here you are also allowed to tick & untick the boxes for music style. You can choose all of them or just one or two if you like, and music will play randomly from those categories. You have a variety of gameplay options as well, & can choose whether to play with your pieces on either side.

Analysis doesn’t work. No response from devs. Do not buy.

I bought this game while it was still at Early Acess. I liked that it has a native version for linux and I was hoping that it could evolve to something closer to the famous Chessmaster software. But it was a huge disappointment. The interface sucks and this game miss some key features: no option to setup the board, no way of taking back a move, no tournament options, no way to rotate the board or change your angle of view, and you can’t change time levels after the game has started, amongst other things. The worst: as you can’t select a different time level for each player, the only real way to weaken the engine is the “blunder” feature of stockfish, which leads into a very artificial game (the feeling is to play against a player with very solid knowlege which all of a sudden would do a very stupid move). The graphics are fine, but the way as this game is now I wouldn’t recomend it even if it was for free (Lucas Chess and Arena are better options and they are free). It is a pity as Chessia had a great potential.

Hoards of Glory

Hoards of Glory

I really enjoy the attack/defense dynamics. It adds a level of strategy beyond luck of random die rolls.

Being brand new, the game has a few quirks, but i’m confident the devs will deal with them in time.

Edit: I have found a few bugs. D3D error that froze the game, upon resuming that save, the AI’s kept rolling their winning shields but continuously used them for shields rather than winning the game.

A simple dice placement game. With dice games, luck is always a big factor and as long as their is a mechanic to mitigate the luck, the game becomes interesting. In Hoards of Glory your dice choices are: place dice on the board to try to fill it for the win, attack another players dice pool to set them back, defend your dice pool from players that have a large dice pool and may go on the attack, put dice in the bank so you can buy new ones at the beginning of your next turn, any combination of these can be done in a turn. The game has AI players and online, although I don’t know how many people have this game so I’m not sure if finding opponents is possible. This is one of those hidden gems, simple and fun.

Kemono Mahjong

Kemono Mahjong

Kemono Mahjj is a fun way to learn Riichi (Japanese mah-jongg). The different characters each have their own playstyles so you can practice against a variety of strategies. Steam integration is poor, though–you need another Steam friend to play online. But you can’t directly invite your friends, so you need to copypaste them a code. I also find it impossible to type to my friends while playing (if I do the game skips my turn). So we have to rely on voice chat.

The interface/settings aren’t great either:

Riichi Mahjong has gained a lot of visibility on the west thanks to anime like Akagi and Saki as well as the Yakuza games, but implementations like Kemono Mahjong keep the entire focus on the game of Riichi itself, while retaining much of its own charm in the process.

It needs to be said: the attention to detail here regarding naming conventions is excellent, which is uncommon; some other Riichi games, both on Steam and not try to use approximate translations and the results range from confusing to outright funny and adherence to the rules (EMA’s - European Mahjong Association’s ruleset, in this case) is very strict and that’s a good thing.

The scenario mode is quite fun, even with AI opponents. The trade mechanics is quite simple. But when you’re combining it with event cards from the scenario mode, it is becoming interesting.

Puzzles and Board Games Mega Collection

Puzzles and Board Games Mega Collection

Simplistic game…which is what I was looking for. Just looking for basic board, casino, & card games. Bought the combo Mega Pack for about $20, which included the Casino ‘Mega’ pack, the Card games ‘Mega’ Pack, the Puzzles & Board Games pack and an additional Mahjong Ultimate. Many titles are repetitive. The Mahjong is included in the Puzzles combo. Several card games are duplicated across the Casino and the Card Games Pack.

Overall, I’m unimpressed and frustrated with it. I’ve logged 15 hrs on it, and will still probably play it more. I’ve tried about 50% of the titles included. It’s a functional time-waster/procrastination tool. Visually, it looks good enough, and is not overly animated which would only slow down game play. It does allow you to save a few profiles which hold your visual settings per profile, and your winnings/losses in the Casino games.

Sky Journey - Jigsaw Landscapes

Sky Journey - Jigsaw Landscapes

Simple little jigsaw puzzle game that I actually found very addictive once I had started; playing this while listening to podcasts helped me to unwind and it distracted me from the existential dread of existence. Few minor bugs but nothing that halts progress. Great to play when you’re slumped in a heap and only want to exert the energy of moving one hand. Recommended.

In essence this is a puzzle game for the younger gamers.

The images are of the family friendly variety.

The art itself is not bad.

Several difficulty choices.

Music is alright.

Due to lack of puzzle “levels” I would only recommend on a steep discount. Got this game with a bundle myself.

As a challenge for myself, in progress of 100% the achievements as of posting of this review.
