Letter Quest: Grimm’s Journey Remastered

Letter Quest: Grimm’s Journey Remastered

Definitely recommended!

It’s fun, it’s cute, it joggs the brain. Whether you’re super brain or fuzzy old me, it’s playable by everyone who can spell English words.

You play as Grimm, a little reaper who is on a quest to get pizza. You venture through various locations where you have to beat up monsters by spelling words from 15 available random letters.

Along the way, you free shopkeepers who sell you stuff for the gems you earn; upgrades, special abilities, books, potions, weapons. There’s even two more characters to unlock that you can play with, with different stats (but all upgrades, special abilities, and stuff transfer)

Fantastic little word game, which can be described as a scrabble-meets-RPG (or to be more precise: monster mashing in a fantasy setting with basic cRPG elements, if you like).

As in original scrabble, you are building words from letter tiles, but instead of accumulating points, you are using them to defeat your opponents. There is loot, potions, various unlockables, character development and… yes, there are quests! (scrabble-like, mainly about building specific number of words meeting specific criteria).

Shuzzler

Shuzzler

The classic word game first released on the iPhone has returned and is now available for the first time on Steam. Shuzzler provides a fresh and challenging gaming experience for those who are fans of the word game genre.

Game Play:

Shuzzler involves spelling words according to criteria given by cards drawn from a deck. For example, a given card may require spelling words with exactly four letters, words that start with the letters “SH-”, or words for types of fruit, US states, or sports. Spell words with letter tiles in a grid by clicking the letter tiles individually or swiping them by click-and-dragging the mouse cursor to connect adjacent letter tiles. If you spell all of the words allotted for a card, you earn it and are awarded the card’s point value in addition to the points you gained from spelling words. The objective is to earn all of the cards.

Key Features:

  • Single-player and local multiplayer or play against an AI opponent

  • 30 levels available in single-player mode

  • Over 190 unique cards

  • Over 55 category cards (e.g. colors, sports, fruits, US states, etc.) featuring beautiful original concept artwork

  • 1, 2, and 3 card draw (see explanation below)

  • Post-game stats

Multiple Card Draw:

The multiple card draw mechanic functions similarly to the way cards are drawn from the deck in a game of Solitaire. Either 2 or 3 cards are drawn at a time and are revealed in a stacked configuration (see graphic below). The top-most card must be earned before the underlying cards can be earned.

Game Modes:

In addition to solo play, the Steam version introduces quick play with two all new game modes, including Pass And Play mode that enables local multiplayer games for playing with friends and _Versus AI _mode that allows you to play against an AI opponent:

Solo Play:

Solo Play (i.e. single-player) offers 30 individually-crafted levels divided into 9 distinct categories: Food, Animal, Geography, English, Science, Home & Living, Culture, Society, and Miscellaneous.

Versus AI:

Play a custom PVE game against an AI opponent with two different custom difficulty settings.

Pass and Play:

Play against a friend locally or remotely on the same device. Customizable game play options include time limit and card-draw (number of cards revealed from deck per draw).__

Is this game for you?

  • First of all, it really is a lot easier than it looks to play (on Easy Difficulty and Zen Mode). On the other hand, Daily Challenge on Hard Difficulty will really test your mettle.

  • Do you like obscure words? If it will be fun for you to see weird and obscure words and learn new words that you’ll use in games like Scrabble and the Crossword, this could be a good match.

  • If you like more casual games that you can then master or just play in a chill mode, we think you should keep learning more. Even as you get better you can try to beat each level faster and faster. If you want a game where you are planning ten moves ahead, this probably isn’t your game.

  • The gameplay is centered around finding a word with the current block, this is rewarded by building up a multiplier by getting consecutive words too.

Mini Words: Polyglot

Mini Words: Polyglot

I love this game. You don’t have to know another language to play. You pick which order you want the languages to give you clues. If one language doesn’t give you a hint then just click a few times to see other languages. You can often tell from the foreign word, especially the more complex words are very similar to English and other languages. Russian never helped me. It’s totally different. You often have to think of synonyms, like the clue is “thema” which is like theme and it’s a seven letter word that starts with S and has a J in it…. subject. Part of it is finding the words, and part of it is making them fit together. The later levels will have four or five words in a letter grid, and it’s like putting together a puzzle to fit the words in… You can use letters more than once, but you can’t cross lines.

This is a really nice game that includes several languages, including English, Russian, German, Portuguese, Spanish and French. This game will help you to learn or familiarize yourself with other languages.

There are 300 different levels to complete to unlock all the achievements. The game takes approximately 7 hours to complete. All the achievements are unlocked by completing all the levels, therefore none of the achievements are missable.

HangTogether

HangTogether

This game reminds me of when I would play Hangman with a chalkboard or dry erase board as a kid. You may get a repeat word every once in a while, however there are quite a lot of words and a good selection of categories. The game gives you the default of Animals, and Sports, but you don’t have to stick with those categories. Animals and Sports are probably the easiest categories, while Grab Bag is the hardest. UK cities, US cities, and Ologies are somewhere in between. If you’re a young reader or learning English, this would be a good game to help with reading. It’s nothing flashy, but it’s a nice opportunity to Hang Together. ;)

Relaxicon

Relaxicon

At some point, when you’re far along in terms of earned points and don’t want the particular run to end, it becomes less Relaxicon and a bit more Concentraticon and even Tensicon. Mainly, though, it is a simple, fairly easy and relaxing way to pass the time and work your brain and language skills. I really like the very detailed dictionary-based explanation of each applied word. It’s especially good for those learning the language - or just wanting to broaden their vocabulary.

Much recommended!

Pros

  • Minimalist word game with great “feel” and responsiveness. Elements pop, float, and drift with natural animations.

  • Gameplay is straightforward and self-explanatory. Like Scrabble or Boggle, it maintains its longevity through simplicity. Longer words score higher. Varied words prevent hitting the “same letter limit.”

Cons

  • Dictionary is inconsistent. Sometimes word forms like past-participles, adverbs, and gerunds are allowed. Other times they are not. It all depends on whether the specific word is arbitrarily in the accepted word list or not. This becomes a problem when you’re at risk of a letter-limit game-over or fail a “minimum word length” challenge because you can’t add a -ing, -ous, or -tten suffix.

As the front page says, this is a educational game for small kids age 5-12.I dont have any kids but looking at some of the puzzles i loud say 5 to 10/11 years maybe.(coud be wrong as i didnt get too far in to the game).
