Woody Two-Legs: Attack of the Zombie Pirates

Woody Two-Legs: Attack of the Zombie Pirates

This game is extremely terrible. It is repetitive beyond belief, even the music. Every stage is the same boring thing with the same boring enemies just re-skinned, just more of them. The ship collision is the worst thing in the game.

There are only a handful of item upgrades, which are all extremely temporary, and some of them are terrible. The wide web is the worst of them all for the fact you can get stuck in it and it lasts what feels like forever. Although, it can be good for the boss fights.

In this wave-based action defense game you are the Captain Woody of a little pirate ship. Consequently he has two wooden legs, but that’s not really important - it’s a joke like most of the game’s story content.

Woody stole some gold from the mighty pirate captain Davy Jones. Unfortunately for Woody, Jones sends his armada of sea monsters and ships commanded by various undead to bring the gold back. You have to sail and cannon away at the enemy ships, which there are maybe ten different types, most of them seemingly little more than re-skins of the basic type, though their behaviour does vary a bit.

I almost quit this game after 5 minutes. Another TD game was frustrating me, this one seemed similar, and the reviews were mixed. It turned out to be not terrible. I stopped playing for the day but then gave it a second chance the next. Yes, it’s worse than Plants vs. Zombies but as a lane defense game it’s not horrendous. It all goes by fairly quickly and can present challenges without being excessively difficult. The people who complained about clicking all over the screen all the time woul clearly prefer to do nothing, even though that is most of the movement in the game once you have set up a row of defense ships.

I gambled the 99 cents and I’m playing the tutorial now. It installed despite the warnings in the older reviews. You need to copy the Serial key Steam gives you and type in a CD key that appears right on the opening page. Duh, stupid and archaic DRM but no problem.

Like the Store page says, it’s Single Player only on PC now. The old reviews are right about GameSpy dying and Google doesn’t find anyone who picked up the multiplayer fumble. If you search for yourself, you might find references to an Android mobile version but I only found an Apple AppStore advertisement that says “Currently only available on iOS.” Apparently, console versions exist or existed but I only have a PC to play on.

The game works for me. Steam should give you a 16-digit alpha-numeric code when you purchase. Put that in the Securom (grey pop up) box in the blank line. Don’t worry about the other long code (25 or 30 chars), it’s generated by them to verify the game. After successfully going through this process once, you should be good. It won’t happen every time you launch.

The Gamespy servers are off, so there’s no multiplayer, leaderboards, or map generator, which does suck, but you’ll be able to get a dollar’s worth from the 21 pre-built scenarios.

Captain Firebeard and the Bay of Crows

Captain Firebeard and the Bay of Crows

This pirate game (long title, can’t be bothered to write it all down) is a charming kinetic novel with a pac-man style minigame. They really should have just written that on the blurb instead but I understand that such a concise description isn’t great for marketing so you’ll have to get your gospel truths from me!

In my usual style I will rattle through my categories:

Story, Writing & Characters

The plot is interesting and has a splash of real history, which I like a lot. Too many times have I seen things set in the Golden Age of Piracy where certain elements are taken from completely different centuries and then smashed together into one, ignoring historical accuracy. I can tell that everything here is really well researched and correct. The writing was sharp, witty and period accurate. The characters feel realistic and consistent and you do feel that you are on an exciting adventure, which is essential in a pirate tale. I liked the jokes a lot, especially those surrounding the hapless captain and his unlucky crew. My favorite character was probably Lady Wendy; something about powerful, calculating women just does it for me… mmmm Teresa May…. I also enjoyed that a fellow Frenchman was shown as being a bad-ass pirate hunter! That was maybe the best bit for me! Vive La France!

Robinson Crusoe and the Cursed Pirates

Robinson Crusoe and the Cursed Pirates

Thumbs up! This is pretty good for a hidden object game. This game was originally released in 2010, but I was able to run it under Windows 10. This was a sequel to Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, but I couldn’t get the original to work. I’m not sure why one works and the other doesn’t, but trying to get old games to run is always a gamble.

This game is mainly hidden object scenes and I thought that they did a good job hiding most of the items. There were a few that I couldn’t find, but there are hints available if you get stuck. There is not much in the way of a point and click adventure, but there is a wide assortment of mini-games. I didn’t like all of the mini-games, but you can skip the ones that you don’t like.

There’s Treasure to Be Found Here!!!

Wow, I must say when I started this game, I was expecting another dull, boring, badly scripted HOG. I love hidden object games, but to be honest there are some bad ones out there. This isn’t the best as far as the story goes, but the puzzles and hidden object scenes are worth it! There are some easy puzzles, some that took me 10-20 minutes to figure out, and some that are just plain hard!! The puzzles were mostly very different from the normal puzzles in HOGs also. Very, very creative and unique for the most part. The hidden object scenes are very nicely put together, and not just a bunch of stuff thrown around. Don’t pass this up if you’re looking for something a little different in an HOG, especially if you like puzzles/brain teasers/riddles to figure out,

I was able to play this on my Windows 7 64-bit system. I have dual monitors, and for some reason it insisted on running on the secondary monitor. I had to disable the second monitor to make it run on the primary. It also failed to run at all sometimes when the second monitor was active. But turning off the second monitor made it work fine.

I liked the art work. The game play was a bit strange. You could get “ideas” and store them for later use, but you couldn’t actually pick up items. The story felt disjointed, jumping between scenes without a smooth transition. There were long cut scenes that couldn’t be paused or rewound, so try to play this in an environment without potential for interruptions.

4/10 - Not good enough to buy, but all right to play if you get it in a bundle or on sale.

The problem with “Ghost Pirates…” is that it, sadly, does not quite realise the potential it had in any area. The premise is very good - three different characters linked by a voodoo curse can talk telepathically and become ghosts. Unfortunately, the ghost part is not for the player to use at all - the characters will just become ghosts when the game needs them to, so there are no nifty puzzles to figure out through, say, combined use of physical body and ghost-hood. And the telepathic link starts off interesting - you ask others about things you don’t know about - but, given the counter-intuitiveness of most puzzles, this soon devolves into one more inventory item that you combine randomly with anything in the hope of advancing.

This game is a lot of fun.

It’s simple and addictive enough that you’ll start to play it for five minutes while waiting for something to start, and then an hour later you’re still playing it. There’s enough collectibles to give a fair amount of variety and leave you in a situation where you’re wondering if you should turn back or slow down to pick up something like an extra battery or a chest, and the randomly generated levels keep you on your toes.
