Pixel Game Maker MV

Pixel Game Maker MV

It’s been a long time coming, but I’m now ready to weigh in my thoughts on Pixel Game Maker MV. I’ve been using this software since early access back in 2018.

TL;DR:

Pixel Game Maker MV is a great game development engine for those that are not programmers, and want to be able to create either side scrolling or top down action games. It’s got enough for a single person development operation to chew on here to create the game you want to create in the way you want it created; bearing in mind that you operate within the program’s limits. If programming/scripting is outside your reach (or if it’s something you can do), this is a great engine that has the potential to be amazing as long as the developers continue with updates & performance improvements. There are assets and DLC that is available at the time of writing for you to get a jump on a concept quickly, but there are no asset standards (outside of keeping things divisible by 2) to conform with.

I’ll begin this review with I’m 36, not 16. I have no illusions about making a game and distributing it for gain. This is a hobby for me and that is the perspective I write this review from. I have a day job. I moonlight as a hobby pixel artist, and that drives me to dev software to have fun with, and bring it to life.

I began with RPG Maker MV as my first dip into game dev software. I do not have a desire to learn to code so that software was more interesting to me compared to more advanced engines. After years in RMMV I felt the want for more control from the ground up, and not be boxed in by hard limitations from the software, and the need for plugins to break through those hard limitations. Pixel Game Maker MV grants me that feeling. I did not feel like the learning curve to get going on a project was difficult, even without a large database of video tutorial content on YouTube at the time.

My Character is Zee, i have made it to 100mil + and love the game. I would like to see more upgrades past 2060 and a possibility of multiple teams that can make multiple games at once.

SHAKESPEARE? More like THIRSTspeare, amirite?

SHAKESPEARE? More like THIRSTspeare, amirite?

You know the drill. It’s a dating sim. But wait: not just any dating sim! One (or more) of your crushes like dating sims, and you, a humble programmer, have decided that is what you will make IN ORDER TO WIN THEIR HEART.

  • Create a cast

  • Write your dating sim over five acts

  • Use various skills such as actually talking to your crush to figure out what they like, and then put that in the game!

  • Navigate the new world as an independent developer!

Good luck! You’ll need it! Unless you’ve already played this game and have memorized what to do!

The Ghost of Joe Papp: 101 Ways To Kill Writer’s Block

The Ghost of Joe Papp: 101 Ways To Kill Writer’s Block

You’ve returned to your hometown after trying to strike it big as a writer out in the mean old world. You’ll find that your old theater festival, the John Q. Public Festival, has fallen upon hard times (but honestly, when has it not?). It’s not easy being Lake Tahoe’s second-best Shakespeare festival. It falls to you to write a new future for the festival, as well as either mend or break your relations with the people that you left behind.

Or at least that’s the story you’re trying to tell. You ARE a writer, but the “hometown” is a play you wrote long ago and the “mean old world”…. well, no, that’s the mean old world. That’s not a stand-in for anything.

As Joe Papp’s author, you find yourself with the ability to change the story that you are in, making choices between multiple characters that ultimately dictate how the story progresses. Will you save the theater festival, or will you cause the zombie apocalypse?

  • Write new paths to go down with (almost) every new scene

  • Your choices have effects on how every character views you

  • Make decisions that will affect your play’s rating with the critics

Kinda fun game. Problem aside from having to walk everywhere is that they don’t seem to be doing anything else with it. Why not? It sort of feels unfinished. I do enjoy it though. Some aspects of it are really cool (stats on the walls)

It has so much potential to be one of the best. Got mine on sale. Love Sales. Please read the other reviews. Thanks ^.^

EDIT: For those new, I tried to put something together to give a feel for what the game is like. I’m not a good Guide creator but there’s something since there was nothing there before. There’s a lot of Screenshots and some tips. :)

Villa’s Blinds is a game development tycoon style game where you can live in the game world. It is a little bare right now but there are some fun twists that you don’t get in any other similar games. You start out in a shabby garage with old hardware so the UI may look ugly at first but if you keep playing, that will improve.

It is interesting they chose 2005 as a time period. You don’t see a lot of games set in this era and I like that

There are things to do besides making games like cleaning, eating, drinking, decorating your space. some fun little mini games. Once you move out of the garage you can join a crew. I particularly liked just chilling out by the fire with them even though they dont say much yet. Very impressive for a fledgling Turkish studio making their first game.

2000s flash nostalgia I didn’t know I needed, the game memes on itself but has decent potential and is fun to play. I hope the dev continues adding content and tightens up the rough edges & UI
