Her Story

Her Story

My rating: 8+/10

Based on: one thorough 100% investigation

Check out my other reviews

TL;DR: An interactive police procedural movie with purposely outdated mechanics, brilliantly written and well-acted, a slow burn and a time sink that offers an engaging story to be discovered bit by bit, an immersive, nostalgic experience of the times gone by, truly worthy of the awards it’s received.

Pros:

(+) a slow-paced, but enthralling open-ended story as told by Hannah Smith whose husband went missing, served up in a series of interviews with this unreliable narrator conducted by police detectives

Her Story is a little bit of an oddity. It’s a FMV game where the player has access to a police database and needs to find out what happened.

It’s actually rather good. The whole game is limited to an old-style interface where you’re able to type in words and search for records. I’ve seen a few games that try to emulate old OSes and they lack a feeling of being a working interface. Her Story feels like a proper old computer you’re viewing. Though I immediately turned off the glare filter, it has a great old charm to the aesthetics with it on..

A Trip to Yugoslavia: Director’s Cut

A Trip to Yugoslavia: Director’s Cut

The main trouble with A Trip to Yugoslavia: Director’s Cut is that the cast is absolutely unfortunate. It does not correspond to the story that they are trying to tell us. All the guys are young, but they are trying to get used to the images, so to speak, of hardened warriors, desperate marauders, nice guys and just daredevils. But everything collapses when before the eyes, well, a maximum of an average thesis project of student directors. Five for the idea, for the scene, too, but the rest … On one enthusiasm it turns out to leave very rarely and even with an incredible level of luck. And here, again, unfortunately, due to the above reasons, serious faces make you smile, the depth of the story is not felt for the same reasons, and it is also a rewind function that nullifies all the efforts of the young guys, because you will definitely start to fast forward to those moments when you just need to make a decision in which direction the hero will move on. FMV is relevant not only on the wave of universal love for everything ancient, but simply because a lot of changes have also occurred in the world of cinema, and taking them into account, you can create something new, like an interactive series, for example. Only for this you need not only talent and enthusiasm, but also a properly composed script, well-chosen actors and sets. It is quite possible that the next project of developer Piotr Bunkowski will be much more serious, it will be launched through Kickstarter and become a full-fledged Adam for the only one at the moment Eve (Her Story). And you can motivate the creator of the game because its price is only 29 rubles. Despite such a negative view, I would recommend you A Trip to Yugoslavia: Director’s Cut. Maybe the criticism will allow the author Piotr Bunkowski to approach his next project, taking into account the shortcomings that were identified in the first attempt at writing. I really hope that the developer will not despair and will continue to improve and it’s not scary that the first pancake is lumpy.

An interesting FMV game with QTE’s and some Point-and-click elements that has a lot of replay value; this replay value is implied in the achievements, which are a proof that a lot of effort was put in those. I love that, but I have to admit that some achievements were a bit nasty and confusing. This made me replay the FMV too many times actually. There is a Fastforward option, but it goes about x2 the normal speed - which I do understand, development/optimization wise.

Thankfully the director & developer of this game are very nice & supportive and have shared several hints via the Community to help us out; it was needed!

Deathtrap Dungeon: The Interactive Video Adventure

Deathtrap Dungeon: The Interactive Video Adventure

Extraneous introduction that u dont need to read. Do you..?

read it anyway

continue south toward the important looking bit.

You read it, oblivious. So this is a book ive seen from waaaaaaay back 80s-90s when I was knee high to a goblin, who unfortunately never stopped following me around. although the owner rightly didnt want to lend it, he kindly showed me the art work and we talked about it. Id since figured id probably never get A chance to try it, consequently I slumped from dodgy second hand store, to run down closing library on whatever fabled turn by numbers hit I could find, but few where as potent. Its good to be wrong.

Probably the most intriguing adaptation I’ve seen of a Fighting Fantasy gamebook, having spent a chunk of my adolescence with the mid-2000s reprints, and every change and tweak to the rules ironically makes this feel more faithful to how Deathtrap Dungeon (the book) was in my memories.

By the old rules (which can still be selected), playing with a low-skill character was just a waste of time, but the default new battle system reframes health as a resource to manage over the course of the game, with fights inevitably ending eventually.

Interrogation Files: Port Landsend

I for sure would recommend this game to you if:

  • You have already played Her Story, liked it, and would enjoy playing a similar game

  • You wouldn’t be put off by lower production values (the acting, in particular, can be distracting)

  • You can look past and put up with some minor but irritating design flaws

If the above describes you then I feel pretty confident that you would enjoy Interrogation Files: Port Landsend. It is clearly a small indie game, but it has an interesting story and I was definitely invested in the investigation to figure out what had happened. For me the good very much outweighed the bad, and I personally wouldn’t hesitate to play future games from the same developer.

I randomly came across this little gem while browsing through FMV games and jumped all over it. I like FMV and I like crime, mystery, and detective games so naturally it was right up my alley. It follows the same format as Her Story by watching clips and searching for keywords, but this game manages to take things a step beyond by introducing multiple suspects.

The case that unfolds is interesting and keeps you invested. The acting ranges from pretty good to some characters who talk while constantly staring off camera to read their lines. I think my favorite part might have been the built-in ‘hint system’ for lack of a better term, where you can click a button to get a undiscovered clip unlocked for you. It’s a big help if you get stuck and it makes going for the 100% achievement much easier than similar games.

Markus Ritter - The Lost Family

Markus Ritter - The Lost Family

Totally recommended.

And it only has one flaw.

That being about locating a grave. which happens to be, by far, the hardest thing that the game requires you to do… Twice. You cant even auto-navigate back to it once you have the candles.

While I was able to find my way around it eventually, I think it took a lot more effort than it should. Some people would have given up. I think even a pictorial guide would be justified. Anything that could raise awareness for this project, since the announcement is only made in-game for those who finish it. This is a game that deserves to be seen. Showcase a longplay of it, if that is what it will take to raise public interest. They were able to pull off a great result with a micro-budget. Imagine what they could offer with a full game.

Decent introduction of this FMV Point & Click, set in Vienna.

This game is the free first chapter of a bigger game. On the 24th of August the two persons developer launched a kickstarter, with this as demo/proof-of-work. I will spoil a big part of chapter one’s story, because this is an introduction. If the genre is something you like my advice would be to just play it. It takes maximum of two hours.

A strange lady…

Markus (or Marcus) has violent nightmares about a historic woman, while in Vienna there are daily reports of ladies being murdered.

I am glad an English version is available, This is a FMV and as for story protag is stuck in day 1 to progress he have to collect info and do something so that he can get past the day, he have to interact with characters the player is given choices to select the one they want and find clues, as for how day works player is given a day from morning to evening, while selecting each activity etc the time progress, so before the end of day player has to find clues talk with people etc if failed to do what the game requires player won’t progress and will be stuck in day 1 and need to repeat the day again and again like Tom cruise did in the movie with Aliens in this game it’s not death but rather failure to find clues that cause reset or starting the day again and again, since it’s a Chinese game there is no guide so it will be even more harder to play.

Roundabout

Roundabout

Roundabout is a cheesy low-budget FMV game starring a limousine driver, a mechanic, a lady in a hat, and a $40 skeleton bought off of Amazon.com with surprising entertainment value.

In Roundabout, you control a constantly rotating limousine. You play as Georgio Manos, the world’s first revolving limousine driver. Your limousine is constantly rotating at all times, which forms the core of the game’s gameplay – you know how to get from point A to point B, but your constant revolution makes your life a lot more difficult. Early on it is fairly simple, navigating your way around stationary obstacles, but as the game progresses, things get increasingly more difficult, with moving obstacles, barrels which cause you to bounce in the opposite direction after striking them, platforming (done while spinning all the while), and the odd unique gameplay challenge to make things harder.

Most of us have been gaming a super long time by now, and anyone who’s been around can tell that ideas are slowly running dry. Innovation is something more or less absent from the game industry as we see the market pump out bland shooters, uninspired retro platformers, Diablo-likes, or roguelike-likes sticking with elements they know sell while struggling to find ideas that haven’t been exhausted already. Every great once and awhile a game comes a long and changes everything capturing the hearts of players everywhere by simply presenting us with a mechanic so strange and simple yet is an absolute blast to play. A game that makes the player stop and ask “Why hasn’t anyone thought of this before?”

Space Ace

Space Ace

Welcome to the game that made me poor as a kid!!!

It was originally released in 1984 a year after ‘dragon lair’ and followed the same principle that being a laser disc arcade. ‘Laser Disc’ technology was like the ‘future’ back then and playing a game like this would make a kid feel like he was time travelling into the future of gaming. Oh what little we knew!

Like its predecessor its art style was all thanks to Don Bluth who worked on masterpiece animation films such as ‘The American Tale’ and the ‘Land before time’ amongst other great works. Like FMV games today, the novelty of controlling a cartoon by moving a hero around the screen away from incoming danger was a popular trend. However ‘Space Ace’ added another dynamic which ‘Dragon’s Lair’ did not have. Not only was the objective to move your main character in the direction of provisional yellow flashes, or to hit the shoot button when the heroes gun flashed yellow, but now you could also occasionally change the main character to an older version of himself changing the dynamics and pathway of that adventure which provided even more animation fun and a very large number of novelty death scenes.

This is a really fun game, and it is definetly a game I’m glad I own.

However:

If you are new to Space Ace/Dragon Lair, these games are basically just a bunch of QTE’s with good animation. The gameplay is fun, with the problem of it being short. At this time, when I have approx. 3.5 hours, I have beaten the game multiple times. The game is pretty short. If you think you’ll replay it alot, I can recommend this game. On the other side, if you want to have a game with more hours of gameplay, I cannot really recommend this.

I’m playing this under windows 10 and the game is so slow it is unplayable. Loading from a save game crashes. Tried it with windows 7 compatibility - same deal with slowness, crashed just as I was leaving the graveyard.

I ended up setting my screen resolution to 1280x800 and setting the compatibility mode to windows xp sp 3. Now I can save and load games and walking around is no longer super slow. I probably spent more time trying to get it to work than I did playing…

I was able to complete the game - it’s quite short. Some of the text in diaries etc are hard to read and voice recording tool doesn’t really sound like anything but static to me. The pendulum tool was quite nice as was the camera.

Short but interesting game about “ghost hunting”,the aim is to search for evidence using (your selection of three) “typical” paranormal investigation tools: a camera, camcorder, thermometer, voice recorder, pendulum, and an EMF (electro magnetic field) detector. This is a point and click adventure that utilises, full motion video scenes throughout the game. The story was interesting but could have been fleshed out a bit more, the ghost video and audio recording were very good and will prove interesting for those interested in paranormal investigation. A bit buggy, the game crashed for me several times during FMV sequences.
