Borealis

Borealis

TL;DR 4/10…This is a simple elegant game which should get a thumbs UP even though most people will get a quick zen moment for 10 or 20 minutes, then abandon. In theory, most any gamer could be happy to drop their 0.50-$1 for this on sale.

However, they took a simple one dimensional mechanic–and blew it.

There are only 13 modes. Meteors zip through the screen with various unique movements, but most of them are heat-seeking (to you), though with very wide turning radii. When encountering each other (or you), they explode. The 1st core rule is that you are not allowed to move your cursor (death-target) very fast. If you attempt to move fast, the game penalizes you by forcing you to move even slower than before. This is a fine rule in that it encourages deliberate, controlled movement, rather than quick, zippy motions.

Certainly not a bad game as such, but the original idea has not been executed as it could have been. As a “dot in space” (or elsewhere), you have to dodge incoming lines. Seems familiar enough, but it comes with a twist: you can only move fairly slow, and when moving in a fluid motion, you can “direct” the incoming lines (I can’t help of thinking about them as missiles) to a certain degree so that they slap into each other. The slow pace and the rather peculiar, somehow relaxing music, contribute to the overall feeling of ease the game offers.

TL;DR: Buy this game. It’s worth every penny.

I have come to enjoy conversing with the Eagre team on Discord, and I can say these are fantastic people with a real passion for what they do. I sincerely hope they keep on creating. I’m going to list out what I felt the pros and cons of ZED are. Mind you, this is from my own experience. Everyone has things they like and dislike, and this is just my case. I played through the entire thing in VR on an Oculus Rift, and I was not a Kickstarter backer, so I bought ZED at full price on the day of release.

I was unaware of this game until it hit Steam. Prior to purchasing, I read many reviews, some positive and others negative. I decided to give this game a chance since I’m not much of a shoot ‘em up type of player and am always searching for something different, enjoyable and relaxing. After purchasing and the start of play, I encountered some issues that were quickly resolved by the creators which then enabled me to play through the game. Currently I am not a VR player, maybe one day. My review is strictly PC based.

CLANNAD Side Stories

CLANNAD Side Stories

So I sign into steam and much to my surprise I see Clannad Hikari Mimamoru Sakamichi de (Clannad Side Stories) on the store page, and after a brief moment of incomparable excitement and a small amount of time to recompose myself I bought the game, now if you have seen my original review of Clannad you will most likely know I have a great deal of passion for this subject matter…..

so I guess I’ll preface this review the same way I did with the original Clannad VN, and this is by saying I maybe a tad bit bias in this as I absolutely love Clannad, I have the Manga, the Blurays, the 10th anniversary art book, so yeah just keep that in mind while reading this review, and try to forgive me ;)

CLANNAD Side Stories Official English Release, Published onto steam by Sekai Project and Developed by Key, who has also developed visual novels like Kanon, Air and Little Busters just to name a few. CLANNAD Side Stories is known as CLANNAD -クラナド- 光見守る坂道で in Japanese. It is originally released on PlayStation®Portable in 2010, it combined the text of the respective novel published in 2005 and audio from the drama CD’s published in 2007. Each story centers around a specific character from CLANNAD, from Nagisa to Yoshino, even including Kyou’s pet, Botan. [Botan is pretty cute but not my favorite of the bunch] Each short story adds rewarding depth to the world of CLANNAD and its cast. A small note before I proceed this review will be slightly different from the other reviews as there will not be any score given. Relavent links can be found at the bottom of this review.

Lots of things are quite funny about this game.

First and foremost, searching through the few games published by this developer you’ll read about Legacy of Medieval (is this even English?) which has a precise release date: November 25th, 2021.

I’m writing as of the first half of 2018, so well.. at least we’ve got some precision here. Not the usual “within some months” or simply “in arrivo” (wondering how’s translated that in English, since I use the Steam client in Italian.. probably like “incoming, we don’t know when but eventually it will become purchasable”). No, we’ve got to wait for 4 years but surely it will be worth it.

I found this game out of the blue, and thought I’d play it, little did I know I’d fall in love with it. I found most of the characters enjoyable, and the humbleness of each of them admirable, though some were more….selfish. I extremely recommend playing this cute, Korean-styled point-and-click adventure game. If I was to point out a downside, there was a lot of back and forth in the final quest, but regardless, it’s able to be beaten within 2 hours.

Very relaxing point and click game over Korean mythology.

Dragons dancing to music was probably the best part in the game.

also what was that large white figure in the darkness you see after talking to the lost crane sibling and faceless animal?

Order of Ataxia: Initial Effects

Order of Ataxia: Initial Effects

No reviews for this one? Guess I’ll give it a shot.

This is a visual novel. If you’ve never played one of those, gameplay consists of reading and making choices. Basically a choose your own adventure.

TL;DR at the end.

At the time of this review, the game is not fully voiced (it will be getting a voice patch later, according to the store page). I completed a single path through the game, and reloaded before the final choice to get a second ending. Took me 3.5 hours.

ART: You can see the art in the screenshots on the store page. It remains consistant the whole way through. Characters have several facial expressions and a couple poses.

I rarely ever write reviews but I like the developers other visual novels and this one didn’t quite reach that expectations but even so it’s by no means bad. I didn’t write a review so much as make two lists but it’s what came to mind so that’s what I did and now I’ll go to waiting for the next Rising Angels episode. :)

Bellow are my positives and negatives for the visual novel.

Bad/what could be improved:

  • Better audio visual feedback when you click something, like a sound effect or the text to scroll.

TLDR; If you have a few bucks to spend and want a unique rhythm game this is for you! If you’re not finding a Rhythm game I would say this game is good but definitely not worth buying “Now”

Intro

I came here just because of EK else I wouldn’t know this game exist. And just by watching it I decided to spend some money and try it.

I would say I’m not disappointed at all except for the visuals outside the game lol.

Gameplay and Perfomance

This is one of those rhythm games where you can’t just press the keys like you always would. Instead you need to move your mouse to match with the position of the beats too. The hard part is that the beats are coming from 2 sides which needs some real big brain moment lol.

Nice game. I you are into arcanoid clones, you gotta love it. It’s probably the best arcanoid clone on Steam.

Pros:

  • interesting levels with multiple horizontal and vertical paddles

  • upgrades purchasable for coins collected on levels

  • adjustable ball speed at any time (standard speed was to hard for me)

Cons:

  • no mouse control, only keyboard or gamepad.

WORLD END ECONOMiCA episode.03

WORLD END ECONOMiCA episode.03

And finally, number three in the WEE series. The story here is another four years on from the previous episode (why four again? They seem to like the number four). This time, we are playing financial lecture with romantic subplot. Hal makes a big bet, wins big, things turn to crap and he chases after the girl he loves and we get a nice, happy, romantic ending. But, they really went full on this time with explaining how things work and even give definitions for some of the terms used. Why they didn’t do that from episode one, I will never know. On top of that, they even give diagrams to show how some things work. Diagrams that simplify or break down how some of these investments work. Diagrams. DIAGRAMS. To me, putting diagrams in was wholly unnecessary because reading this you need at least a basic understanding of how these things work and because this is number three in the series, and you have almost certainly read one and two, I feel like everyone reading this has that.

World End Economica. An epic tale about greed, dreams, and moon stocks. Set four years after the second game this story concludes the series in one hell of beautiful finale.

First off, if you’re here to check out whether or not this trilogy is worth getting, YES. ABSOLUTELY. This series is great with each installment being an improvement over the previous which were already good and great games, respectively, in their own right. Be warned though, there’s a lot of economics terminology that may fly over your head, but even if you don’t understand a lot of the terms the underlying story is always easy enough to follow that it shouldn’t be a real issue. In fact, it may even interest you. At the very least you’re bound to learn something about stocks and the economy.

A Light in the Dark

A Light in the Dark

Our main protagonist is a boy born into a rich, but dysfunctional family. As fate would have it, he gets kidnapped and held to ransom by a pair of girls, who have been living in severe financial troubles for who knows how long. Throughout the lives of these girls, one of them has come to despise the rich and their tendencies to take all the little things in life for granted, so for her to be able to hurt or even kill her hostage seems pretty straightforward. Our protagonist can either try to escape through force or coaxing, or die trying either. Either way, throughout this entire ordeal one thing would become clear to both sides: the world is not fair.

50:50? 51:49? Ugh. Well, all I can give is a neutral recommendation. I don’t really against this VN. Artwork and music background are well presented here. I couldn’t ask for more. Both can express emotion and situation perfectly. Some artwork probably doesn’t look optimal yet, but I didn’t find that disturbing. I will also never forget to mention the facial expressions and gestures that with no doubt are clear and expressive. Music background that changed accordingly also accompanying me well during the game.
