Polter Pals

Polter Pals

Making friends in the afterlife is a little different.

You play as a lonely ghost with the power to possess the living. Surrounded by Oomans who cannot see you, you must use this power to steer them into comically fatal accidents and an early friendship, freeing the friendly ghosts within them. Each level is a puzzle diorama, styled after classic children’s stop-motion cartoons, where you have to figure out how to make all the friends using the available hazards.

Every Ooman you ghost will add you on LiveBurial, the afterlife’s hottest social media app. The posts of your newly deceased friends give you a unique look at the dysfunctional, hyper-consumerist world of the living through the lens of a social media-obsessed afterlife.

Key Features

  • Possess hapless Ooman friends-to-be and steer them into cartoonishly gruesome friend-making hazards.

  • Puzzle through 60+ levels across 4 thematically distinct areas, including 4 unique bosses that test your mastery over the power of possession.

  • Keep up with your phantom friends via the in-game Live Burial app! Each new friend you make shares their thoughts and feelings about their recent expiration via darkly humorous social media posts.

  • Learn about the world of Polter Pals through the in-game Encyclopeoplia app, a collection of questionably sourced articles on all Oomans, hazards, and bosses encountered in the game.

  • Make friends to a groovy soundtrack by the Mysterious Breakmaster Cylinder.

Hobo Cat Adventures

Hobo Cat Adventures

A fun and silly 3D platformer with a character and story aesthetic like a love letter to Conker’s Bad Fur Day. Full of silliness, over the top humor, potty mouths, flying body parts, and is a blast! Ride a chicken to get around. Zoom around on an over-caffeinated spree. Roll around with crazy physics as a Snowball. Blast a regiment of rat warriors to smithereens with bombs. Hack em to bits with a chainsaw and collect their heads as trophies. Twang your banjo. Help a very drunk duck deny the reality of his living conditions. Drink Hobo Brew until you’re pissing on plants to rejuvinate the local flora and fauna. Full of little nods and references to it’s inspirations. An overall a silly good time!

So, first of all, I have to say this game was my first Steam purchase and I don’t regret it.

The funny characters, the varied places as well as the many possibilities that the items offer always put a smile on my face.

Some of the collectibles are well hidden but not unfair. The quests that you get in the game are all very varied and do not repeat themselves.

As a German, I don’t understand the Eastereggs that are based on the Swiss streaming scene, but so it piqued my interest to take a look. It was really interesting to deal with it a little more, because I never noticed anything about it. Which of course is not surprising.

A Pretty Odd Bunny

A Pretty Odd Bunny

Note: I received a free copy of this game from the developer with the intention for me to review it.

So, first things first, A Pretty Odd Bunny is hard as nails stealth platformer that despite it’s cute appearance, has some pretty violent aspects to it, making it a poor choice for a younger audience. Do not go into this expecting a kids’ game, because your ass will promptly be handed to you by it’s many perils.

I really enjoyed how fresh this game felt. I’ve played a lot of platformers over the years, I would even say it’s one of my favourite genres, but a lot of them can feel very samey or average. A Pretty Odd Bunny keeps the platforming gameplay fresh by adding in some stealth elements. You cannot attack your foes, you will need to find ways to avoid or sneak past them. There are other levels that change things up additionally by chasing you with a overflow of carrots, or making you ride in a minecart.

After completing it, i can safely say it’s a extremely fun game

it’s short, simple, cute, and just fun

it’s visuals and art style combined with it’s mild gore and central theme feels very reminiscent of newgrounds platformer game

There’s not much to say besides that if you’re looking for a simple but addicting fun game or want something cute or want bunnies(although one that eats pigs) then i’d highly recommend it especially for it’s price.

Grandma’s Footsteps

Grandma’s Footsteps

Inspired by the classic children’s game: ‘Red Light Green Light’… comes a… not so children’s game.

The Story

You are staying at your Grandma’s house for the weekend to keep her company. Now, your Grandma is famous in the family for her cookies! And being the ‘cookie-loving’ grandson that you are, you cannot keep your mind off of her scrumptious, freshly baked goods!

As you explore through the different rooms of Grandma’s house, you notice Grandma getting on with her day to day house-work and activities: sweeping the hallway, cleaning the dishes, catching up on knitting projects and so on…

You and Grandma are best of friends! She takes you to the park to feed the ducks, to the beach to build sandcastles together and she always has her renowned cookies an arms length away! You’ve always wanted to learn to make cookies with her, but every time you ask to she refuses, saying how she’ll take her secret cookie recipe to the grave with her!

As the years have gone by, Grandma’s eyes have been getting worse, as has her memory! She always forgets where she leaves her glasses.

She likes to joke when she tells you her bedtime stories, saying how she carries a shotgun on her at all times in case intruders try to steal her recipe!! Grandma does make you laugh, you love her silly stories!

The Game

So how do you play Grandma’s Footsteps?

Grandma’s house is made up of 6 different rooms (levels). To unlock the next room along you will need to approach grandma in the current room you are in to receive a cookie!

But Grandma is always on the look out for intruders after her secret cookie recipe!

Grandma isn’t wearing her glasses, meaning she cannot see her Grandson properly… So when she turns around… don’t move, or else her bedtime stories you so well know and love, may just become reality…

Howdy, Jacob!

Howdy, Jacob!

This was a visual trip, it’s kinda like Where’s Waldo but with psychedelics. It has a very interesting approach to storytelling which I like and the music is fun and upbeat. It gave me some nostalgic vibes. I was reminded of the video overlays in one of the Police Quest games for the storytelling and the levels have a sort of wondrous mystique to them that you don’t experience much in games these days. There’s a totally dark vibe to the story without being too scary.

If I had to list one criticism it would be that I struggled to find the exit button during a level, but it all worked out of course. Overall it was worth the $10 for sure.

Disclosure: I was on the video capture and performance team for the game, but did not have anything to do with gameplay, art, or design.

Howdy, Jacob! shines brightest in its rich world and great writing. The characters are interesting and diverse, and curious players are always rewarded with a little bit of content wherever they look. It is a world that feels much, much bigger than the game, and fascinating!

The other high point is the art! The images are very vivid and unique, and the style sticks with you!

Billion Beat

Billion Beat

I love this game, the world is always in need of more Punch-Out-likes and this scratches every itch it has, and the music is insanely good.

Only thing that could drive people away is how gross the characters look but they grow on you after a while.

The combat is a lot more ‘groovy’ than Punch-Out, more rhythmesque, if you will. Feels more like dancing than it does straight up beating the shit out of someone.

Real player with 131.2 hrs in game

Billion Beat is great. The visuals and music are on point. The gameplay follows the Punch-Out formula perfectly: time your punches and dodge or counter theirs. If you make a mistake, your character will take a bit to recover and that is more than enough time for your opponent to mess you up, so learn from coach Baby T and DON’T JUST MASH THE BUTTONS!

There’s also a bunch of stuff to keep things fresh like “hype moves”, items and even progression. Successfully landing a regular punch rewards you with a bit of energy and you need that energy to dish out the heavy punishment, so you quickly start to get into this flow of dodging and countering to build up your energy until you can finally let your hands fly.

Manual Samuel - Anniversary Edition

Manual Samuel - Anniversary Edition

I would like to recommend this game, really, but the final act totally ruins the experience, bringing everything to a grinding halt for what is otherwise a humor and story driven game.

It’s got fair-to-ok humor, lots of jokes that reminded me of the old Diskworld games, especially with the narrator interactions. However the humor is clearly targeting men, as the jokes are mostly physical humor, denigration and toilet laughs. Samuel literally pisses all over himself, and repeatedly vomits as a function of the game, which often comes across as lazy humor.

What is Manual Samuel ?

For a game that started pretty well with a funny sense of humor and a nice personality, its a huge shame it felt so hard on its face, Manual Samuel presents itself as a overconfident indie game but everything is just so pretentious and kinda mediocre towards the end, in fact after the initial moments the game started losing momentum, for a game that presented itself as something refreshing and well-done early to become something so boring and uninsteresting so fast was a huge shame, lets talk about why below.
