New Ice York

New Ice York

This game is so much more than I expected it to be. At first, playing it- I was charmed by how weird it was but after playing through it, I found myself feeling connected to this universe and the characters within it. It’s intuitive- familiar, but totally different. Refreshingly fun, and an overall great release by magicdweedo, an artist I’ve really enjoyed since Mealmate™. Make sure to check out the soundtrack, too- it’s really catchy!

New Ice York has deceptively good writing. The first chapter is unfortunately slow, which is a bad problem for a game of this length to have, but that slowness does its job of lulling you into a familiarity with the characters that it uses as a platform to build off of. NIY unfurls in a way similar to Frog Fractions or magicdweedoo’s last major game, Ticket: breaking its own rules and shuffling weird mechanics around. Where the former games engage themselves in a game of zany one-upsmanship, though, New Ice York’s treatment of mechanics is much more narrative and constrained. Detective has an oblique resemblance to Deadly Premonition’s Francis York Morgan / Twin Peak’s Dale Cooper, and similar to those stories New Ice York’s descent into surrealism takes on a personal significance in the quest of the protagonist.

Review with accompanying gameplay videos on Sinical Network

I recently received this game for free as a curator connect offer for my group Visual novel, JRPG, Anime. This kinetic visual novel from Studio Beast and Fruitbat Factory features a trio of unemployed teenage girls Arue Marisugawa, Koiro Hachisuka and Arara Fujisaki with Arue as the protagonist in this episode.

Arue, Koiro and Arara were ineligible to wear any authorization seal which renders them unable to hold any permanent stable employment and hence became Chuusotsu. Arue plans to take a re-evaluation exam and become a government official after missing a crucial exam during middle school from being hospitalized. To be able to survive in a foreign city on a stipend without having to work, Arue has to participate in an experimental study where she has to stay in Tabula Rasa apartments with Koiro and Arara, achieve sufficient synchronicity among themselves and give an answer to the philosophy of life.

Chuusotsu is a cute sci-fi slice of life medium length (by medium I mean between 8-18hs, anything above is already into the longer side) kinetic visual novel with a lot of layers behind the seemingly simplistic front.

You follow the misadventures of Marisugawa Arue as she tries to reform her life as a shut-in, reach her dreams and obviously make some friends along the way. However, things quickly take a turn into the weird and strange but thankfully with a satisfactory conclusion and lead up to the mini sequel.

Attack of the Mutant Penguins

I purposefully look out for weird, obscure games full of personality, so I’m not the best judge, but personally I’m in love with this game’s weirdness. If you want new, never done before or after gameplay concepts, give this a shot. If you aren’t one for something new, or just can’t get past its weirdness, I’d say pass.

I had a problem when using the gamepad, so I requested a refund for the game. I got it because of the nostagia since this was one of the titles for the Atari Jaguar. I never played it, so I wanted the experience.

However, it runs in DOSbox emulator, and i found it pretty expensive for what it is.

The premise:

It’s a Zach-Like programming puzzle game where you write code to move robots around a 2D grid and perform tasks. If that sounds like your thing (and it certainly sounded like mine!), you’ll probably like this one. The most well-known and obvious game to compare it to is 7 Billion Humans, but to me it feels much more heavily influenced (in both gameplay and story, and art style for that matter) by Marvellous, Inc..

It is different enough from both of those to qualify as its own thing, though.

A charming little game where you program your worker-bot to complete mundane tasks - uncover a sinister plot - and get in over your head engaging in corporate espionage!

The levels lacked any leaderboards - so there’s less of an incentive to optimise everything like you often get in this genre - so not a huge amount of replay value; but I was a big fan of the easter eggs, with extra scraps of story hidden off the main track.

It’s also good at teaching you the mechanics; introducing them slowly - so by the end combining them into a complex program becomes second nature… I mean very good at that; someone has obviously put a lot of thought into doing that.

Welcome to the Polyverse

Welcome to the Polyverse

Great game, enjoying it thoroughly (still getting used to some of the mechanics). I can see the dev is really trying something different here. The low-poly aesthetic that is increasing in popularity actually makes sense if the player is in a simulation as this game suggests. Well done and I hope to see much more as I explore.

  • NEEDS MORE CRITTERZ!!!

Even if the game is still in early access, it’s already amazing! Thank you Xenon for the work you’re putting in this game!

And the third entry in the Space Funeral series sports a lovely Vaporwave palette. OK, not really, but it might as well be. I could leave it right there, and it’d stand just fine as a recommendation or not, but I’ll elaborate. This is one of those RPG Maker games that defies the usual, and flies in the face of all the half-assed creations that make most people wary about buying anything from the engine. It’s still a little rough around the edges right now, but it’s certainly playable, and I can’t wait to see the finished product!
