Z. Year One

Z. Year One

Short version:

Besides the initial (at times very frustrating) hour or so, I have found this game extremely fun to play. It’s a decent challenge, looks incredible and the developers are very responsive and diligent at tackling bugs. It is a gem of a game that has production values and mechanics on par with the elite digital card games out there, but which will cost you a fraction of the price to remain forever competitive.

Pros:

  • Looks great!

  • Unique location mechanics, card abilities and strategies versus other digital card games.

Great card game, lots of promise for the future. Good concept, good photo artwork, fun to play even when you lose. Still a bit of work to do, could benefit from a lot more locations and location specific event cards but looking forward to seeing how it turns out when it’s finished.

Will kill Zombies and get disapproving looks from partner for having an all female deck again…..

(Addition) After a few more updates since first posting this review you can tell how committed the team are to producing a decent game. Hats off to them for all the hard work. The decision to put a pricetag on the game and giving booster packs to unlock cards through gameplay is a much better idea than a f2p version, the game is worth it.

Lords of Cards

Lords of Cards

In Lords of Cards, build a deck of 90 cards and defy your opponents in real-time.

SELECT AMONG MORE THAN 60 UNIQUE CARDS

Building your deck is probably the most important step. Think upfront to create the best combinaisons of cards. Choose your troops, your constructions and your spells, to get the upper hand over your opponent.

DEFEND YOUR FORTRESS

The goal is simple: the first player who brings the opponent’s fortress to ground wins the game. Winning the battle usually means building the strongest economy, to recruit more troups that will harrass your opponent.

MANY STRATEGIES TO DEFEAT YOUR OPPONENT

Will you try and strike as soon as possible? Will you recruit a lot of weak units to swarm your opponent? Will you be patient, defensive and slowly build to send powerful units? Many combinaisons of cards are possible and let you play by your own strategy.

UNLOCK NEW CONTENT BY PLAYING - NO PAY-TO-WIN

With your victories and experience in the game, you will gain gems that let you unlock new cards. You can also unlock new skins or animations for your avatar. The game doesn’t contain any payment feature, you will have to unlock the content by playing.

Valve got greedy.

Apparently Valve forgot everything they learned from TF2, CS:GO and Dota2. Making fun games fully accessible to everyone. Online games without players and communities are destined to fail.

But… Nope. Valve decides to exclude 90% of the World.

  • Pay for the game.

  • Pay for cards to play the game, making the best cards the rarest and therefore most expensive. (when they said power level wouldn’t be related to rarity)

  • Pay to enter prize modes.

  • Take a % cut of prize mode entry fees.

Valve has literally abandoned the game…

Edit: 13/03/2021

This game was so hyped at the time, and for me, the gameplay lived up to it for me when it launched, it was so different from everything that I’ve tried before and I did not even know Dota 2 universe… But after years waiting for something, it’s finally Official, both versions of the game, Classic and Foundry, will not be in further development… Here is some of the main things that were impactful during all this time being a casual player.

PHAGEBORN Online Card Game

PHAGEBORN Online Card Game

I’m really enjoying this game. It’s very cheap for a card game and the progression is good. 1-2 games win or loss and you get an unlock (around 6 cards). It’s similar to hearthstone with heroes/avatars and abilities. There’s 5 heroes in each of the 3 factions, (more in the future) Each have an ability like a hero power, and 3 traits that you select 1 from. They also have their own hp, and power and they can attack. There are 2 lanes, and you can’t attack through blockers. There’s also 2 separate resources, one for minions and one for spells. I’m just ranting on specifics but basically there is a lot of depth to the game. It feels familiar but it’s also new and fresh. The card acquisition feels much better than legends of runeterra.

First of all:

This game is in early access. Do not expect a full experience with AI, Ranked and Draft. If you come into this game expecting all that, I would like to inform you that the developers have a roadmap that is publically accessible. Please check that as it contains features that will be implemented later.

This game does not unlock all the cards at the start, you still have to progress through the unlocks. They are not random and do not require additional payment, in fact, you cannot pay for them.
